Why do people like gravy so much?

I'm the only person in Britain who doesn't like gravy, I reckon.

It makes everything on the plate soggy, tasting of brown gravy.

I'm having steak pies today, made with a rich sauce inside and nice crumbly shortcrust pastry. And I just know that DP and kids will insist in having gravy too. Making the crumbly pastry all soggy and gloopy and everything taste of wet.

Also ruins Yorkshire puddings and Sunday dinner.

I don't get it.

I don't know how to make gravy but almost everything tastes better with sauce of some sort. My cooking (meat dishes) tends to be on the dry side. So i enrich the taste with sauce. The easiest sauce i make is tomato puree melted in a bit of boiling water and knob of butter and teeny bit of salt. Goes wonderful with dryish steak and chicken and sausages etc. Delicious.

In some parts of America people enjoy biscuits with gravy. I assume they don't mean Bourbons.

I hate gravy. I’ve tried different kinds from different people who badger me to try their gravy as the reason I don’t like it is clearly that I haven’t had ‘proper’ gray. Nope still don’t like it.

And actually I can tell you a shit Sunday lunch from a good nicely seasoned one because I taste the food not just gravy.

And yes to the way it makes food mushy. Boak!

I actively like a soggy pastry. I can't stand it when it's all dry and clags to the top of your mouth.

It's gravy all the way for me.

BakedBeans47 · 12/11/2017 12:54

I like a small amount of gravy just to stop the food being dry. I love custard though.

What I really don’t get is drowning chips in malt vinegar. Not only does it smell and taste rank but it makes your chips soggy. Boak.

Tubbyinthehottub · 12/11/2017 13:11

Oh Bakedbeans! Completely agree re vinegar. I can understand why people like the taste but it’s cold to start with! So wrong on lovely hot chips.

Rebeccaslicker · 12/11/2017 13:16

You can't have chips without vinegar!!!! That's sacrilege.

What I don't get is ketchup. Why would you want something cold and sweet on your hot savoury chips??

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 12/11/2017 13:20

DD hates it. She just wont touch it.

I hate hot custard. Tastes weird.

When we moved to the UK, and DS was 6 he had his first ever roast dinner at his school. He came home and told me, in horror:"they put meat on my plate, and vegetables and potatoes. It looked really nice. Then the dinner lady poured all this brown soup over it. I was told off for not eating it"

He was so shocked Grin

He learned to say "no gravy please" very quickly.

Of course, real gravy is lovely. But mostly you get Bisto which is vile.

HamSandWitches · 12/11/2017 14:10

Just had a KFC with a big tub of gravy to dip the chicken and chips in.

VileyRose · 12/11/2017 14:15

I don't like it.

Never understood gravy with chips. All you need is salt and vinegar on hot chips and any sauces of your choosing on the side.
