Why do people like gravy so much?

I'm the only person in Britain who doesn't like gravy, I reckon.

It makes everything on the plate soggy, tasting of brown gravy.

I'm having steak pies today, made with a rich sauce inside and nice crumbly shortcrust pastry. And I just know that DP and kids will insist in having gravy too. Making the crumbly pastry all soggy and gloopy and everything taste of wet.

Also ruins Yorkshire puddings and Sunday dinner.

I don't get it.

If your roast dinner is dry without gravy, you're doing it wrong.

PumpernickleInaWarehouse · 11/11/2017 19:55

I drown my roasts in gravy I love it

Tedster77 · 11/11/2017 20:01

I just cannot stand dry food so gravy is a godsend Grin. I couldn't eat a potato without some kind of wet on it.

Having said that I hate Yorkshire puddings with or without gravy Shock

No, me too! Never eat the horrid stuff. But then again, I hate the old "meat and two veg" type of meal full stop - would certainly never eat that kind of meal given a choice and thankfully can't remember the last time - a few years at least. The thought of a Sunday roast fills me with dread - I'd honestly rather just have a slice of toast.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/11/2017 20:05

Mmmmmmm

Pile of chips. Grated cheese on top. Then covered in gravy.

Mmmmmmmm

littlemissneela · 11/11/2017 20:08

Without gravy, or a sauce of some sort, I wouldn't be able to eat a lot of dinners (issues with swallowing food if too dry). Before I had this problem, I still liked gravy though maybe not quite as much as now.

I usually have about a 50/50 ratio of food to moist.

That sounds about right to me, too Hole

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/11/2017 20:39

adding bisto would ruin it.

Adding Bisto would ruin anything!

But Bisto ISN'T gravy!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/11/2017 20:43

people that smother their food in gravy..urgh...seems so common

You do know that Our Dear Queen sits watching Corrie with a pint jug full of gravy and two dozen yorkshire puddings that she dips in and eats with her fingers, don't you vulgar?

Oh - hang on - no. That's me that does that. Wink

As you were. Grin

So, the pie was very much like this - no carrots in mine though.

Looks nice, but I would add some gravy though.

Mind you, I can't stand that jelly stuff in pork pies. i scrape it out

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 11/11/2017 20:50

Crisp Yorkshire pudding, golden syrup, clotted cream. Just sayin’

RustyBear · 11/11/2017 20:53

Surprised no-one’s mentioned herbs in relation to gravy - I’d never make gravy without them. My favourites are sage and oregano with pork, thyme and marjoram with beef, rosemary & thyme with lamb. With chicken I like to try different combinations depending on my mood.

insancerre · 11/11/2017 20:54

Hate, hate, hate gravy
I don't see the point of it at all
And I definitely do not want it anywhere near my chips

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/11/2017 20:58

I can't stand that jelly stuff in pork pies.

But that's the best bit , , ,

drinkswineoutofamug · 11/11/2017 21:24

@venellopevonschweetz
At this moment in time I’m think of dropping the wine and adding brandy , but it hasn’t got the same ring to it!
Had fish , chips, cheese & gravy for tea and it was fit

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 11/11/2017 21:30

But that's the best bit , , ,

Not when it reminds me of uncut tinned ham on a plate and the jelly "melting".

LisaSimpsonsbff · 11/11/2017 21:35

I usually have about a 50/50 ratio of food to moist.

The thought of a meal that is that covered in sauce is quite repulsive to me - horses for courses!

Jjacobb · 11/11/2017 21:40

Dh hated gravy when we met because his mother’s idea of gravy was an oxo cube in water, nothing else. No meat juices because she only cooked those Bernard Matthews rolled joint thingies.

He was truly amazed when he first tasted my proper gravy.

lalaloopyhead · 11/11/2017 21:42

My mum doesn't like gravy so you never get it round their house, i started taking my own.
I love gravy, honestly can't understand how anyone can enjoy a Yorkshire pud or mashed potato without it

Roussette · 11/11/2017 21:44

OP that pie looks delicious.

BUT

I would want cauli cheese (with lots of cheese sauce) or onion gravy on that. Otherwise it would be very very dry. Just my opinion of course!

NameChangeFamousFolk · 11/11/2017 21:50

Schadenfreude/Queenie and your dipping Yorkshires to Corrie. Grin

Line of the night Grin

Socksey · 11/11/2017 21:54

OP.... I feel your pain..... gravy is fine on sloppy stuff like mashed potatoes.. .. but definitely not pie or stuff which is designed to be crispy or crunchy.... and if the mash has been crisped off in the oven then gravy should be nowhere near it....
It's a bit like custard with Apple pie or ice cream etc..... aaargh.... why?????

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/11/2017 21:56

I have no issues with gravy. Custard on the other hand... what's the point of making a lovely pudding and then covering it with milky stuff....
