Why do people like gravy so much?

I'm the only person in Britain who doesn't like gravy, I reckon.

It makes everything on the plate soggy, tasting of brown gravy.

I'm having steak pies today, made with a rich sauce inside and nice crumbly shortcrust pastry. And I just know that DP and kids will insist in having gravy too. Making the crumbly pastry all soggy and gloopy and everything taste of wet.

Also ruins Yorkshire puddings and Sunday dinner.

I don't get it.

I wouldn't have it on chips but I do love pie or sausage and mash with gravy or a roast dinner, incl. Yorkshire puddings, with gravy. In fact, I've just had sausage and mash with gravy. I soaked up the leftovers with a slice of bread. Delicious.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2017 17:24

Omg OP, I have finally found someone who agrees with me!! I I never have gravy on anything and people think I’m weird.

woollyminded · 11/11/2017 17:26

I think most people have been scarred by bisto, or whatever the hell they substituted it for in school dinners. Also those of us with war baby parents who grew up eeking out their Sunday dinners for days by hiding things in it and then kept cooking that way through the 70s and 80s because they knew no better.

But a little pour of well made proper gravy, made from the bits in the pan, good stock and well seasoned, oh my days, yes.

drinkswineoutofamug · 11/11/2017 17:27

Chips, cheese and gravy 🤤

GunnyHighway · 11/11/2017 17:30

If you taste my gravy... you'd get it.

Hope you've got a big table as a couple of thousand people might just want to try

TitsalinaBumSqoosh · 11/11/2017 17:31

I love a decent made from scratch gravy, not on chips though. That’s just gross.

My Nan used to ha e gravy that used to ‘set’ she’s slice of a round and heat it up to liquid for granddads dinner and then pop the rest back in the fridge. No one ever knew what it was made of but grandad seemed to like it! 😃

Steaksauce · 11/11/2017 17:32

Im with you op. Its vile stuff. Why anyone wants their food to taste of brown is beyond me.
My family give me so much shit about it all the time. Im in my 30s. They need to get the fuck over it Hmm
Luckily I now have an ally - my nephew can’t stand it either.

Smoothyloopy · 11/11/2017 17:33

Someone I worked with had a DH who didn't like gravy, she used to make him a gravyless stew. Still not worked how she managed it.

diddl · 11/11/2017 17:36

There's a middle ground between no gravy & drowning the food in it!

Some stuff can be too dry I think & just needs a dip in gravy.

MsHarry · 11/11/2017 17:36

Because it's lush!

Battleax · 11/11/2017 17:36

That's a stir fry, isn't it? Confused

Angelicinnocent · 11/11/2017 17:37

Me, DH and DD are all very picky with gravy. Basically, only mine and only on certain things. DS on the other hand will eat it with anything

MsHarry · 11/11/2017 17:38

Not sure what gravy you've had? Proper gravy tastes of meat juices, carrot, celery, onion, bay, wine. I add a tsp of dijon too. Delish!

expatinscotland · 11/11/2017 17:38

Yum, yum! More for us.

DancingHouse · 11/11/2017 17:38

Cos it's gert lush

brasty · 11/11/2017 17:38

I am with you OP. I am always sad if I have ordered nice food like a roast and forgot to check that it does not come with gravy poured over it.

Hotheadwheresthecoldbath · 11/11/2017 17:38

I'm not much of a gravy eater but how can you not have gravy with Yorkshire's?Onion gravy is our favourite but when kids the fat was drained from the tin the beef was cooked in for dripping and the gravy made from the bits left behind.I now have my grandmothers Yorkshire pudding tins which are round ,nice and deep to hold the gravy,no sogginess.

MsHarry · 11/11/2017 17:39

A Yorkshire pud without gravy is against the law I think.

Ohdearducks · 11/11/2017 17:40

Sauce in your pie is gravy though?

brasty · 11/11/2017 17:40

And I have had proper gravy. It tastes fine, but not over anything else that tastes good. If you make a horrible roast I will eat it to drown out overdone food. But if the food is nicely cooked, then no gravy.

kimlo · 11/11/2017 17:42

I love gravy. But not touching my yorkshire pudding.

Leeds2 · 11/11/2017 17:43

I love Bisto. So called "proper" gravy I can take or leave.

NameChangeFamousFolk · 11/11/2017 17:43

I like a tiny bit on meat if it's beef. If the vegetables are really delicious though, I'd rather taste them than have them drowned in gravy. Pork or chicken with gravy is hideous though.

Also, there is a world of difference between crap gravy and decent, freshly made gravy.

It needs to be served separately though - I would hate it slopped all over my food! I probably think that really delicious food doesn't really need it to be honest.

CoolCarrie · 11/11/2017 17:44

I hate gravy as well!

TatianaLarina · 11/11/2017 17:44

I dislike gravy, I also dislike steak, pies and Yorkshire puddings...
