Why do people like gravy so much?

I'm the only person in Britain who doesn't like gravy, I reckon.

It makes everything on the plate soggy, tasting of brown gravy.

I'm having steak pies today, made with a rich sauce inside and nice crumbly shortcrust pastry. And I just know that DP and kids will insist in having gravy too. Making the crumbly pastry all soggy and gloopy and everything taste of wet.

Also ruins Yorkshire puddings and Sunday dinner.

I don't get it.

Based on what you wrote in your OP am I right in thinking your "gravy" is made from a tub of granules. If you went to the effort of making beautiful meaty gravy from pie meat before you made the pie then the gravy would be the perfect compliment. Not swimming in it, but to finish the meal off.

a bit of nice gravey on a roast fine but I don’t get gravey with pie - isn’t the pie filling saucy enough??

EnglishGirlApproximately · 11/11/2017 18:36

I don’t mind a bit to add some ‘wet’ but only a spoonful. DP drowns everything in it I honestly think the only thing he can taste is gravy. The weirdo also does it with custard, so every pudding just tastes of custard Confused

Haint · 11/11/2017 18:36

That nice rich sauce - that’s gravy that is

SuzukiLi · 11/11/2017 18:37

Well my drunk boyfriend has just poured gravy on his pizza so there we go.

HotelEuphoria · 11/11/2017 18:38

Maybe it's because I'm northern, Peter Kay "has tha nowt moist?" Sums it up.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/11/2017 18:38

DS hates gravy. I am considering putting him up for adoption because of this

Are you sure you brought the right baby home from the hospital Mamma?

I believe that loathing gravy is a recessive trait and at least one parent needs to exhibit it and the other has to carry it.

Mollie85 · 11/11/2017 18:39

I’m about as southern as you can get before you hit France Wink and I Love the stuff! Grin

Not to the extreme of my brother, who also has it on fishfingers ... Confused

My dad used to add tomato ketchup to gravy as I found out this year when trying to make mine as perfect as his - I actually started a thread about it (strange things you add to food which make it taste better).

The best bit about the Sunday roast was the slice of bread at the end. Dip it one side down then the other, then cut it into small squares... don’t come at me - it’s amazing Smile

And your point is . . .?

LisaSimpsonsbff · 11/11/2017 18:39

Ooh, yes, that's another thing I hate. I might drizzle a little cream or custard on a pudding (depending on what it is) but when it arrives sunk like a little island in a lake of custard, it turns my stomach. I was served chocolate cake like that recently - eurgh. Chocolate cake doesn't need custard!

Mamabear4180 · 11/11/2017 18:39

I can't stand pie and mash without gravy, it makes me irrationally angry.

PuppyMonkey · 11/11/2017 18:41

My gravy isn't made from anything as I'm not having it Hotel. Confused

The pie has a filling of meat with sauce. I am able to eat this. I didn't make pie myself, I bought it from a pie shop.

GRanules or home made from scratch, I hate all gravy. Please believe me.Grin

Oh yes I also hate custard. Grin

Curry sauce goes on chips...not gravy

but gravy is delicious on chips as long as they are chip shop chips

EnglishGirlApproximately · 11/11/2017 18:44

schadenfreude I get offended on behalf of my lovingly made puddings Grin Hurray for the custard haters!

kinkajoukid · 11/11/2017 18:46

Mmm lovely gravy!!!

But gravy should be every bit as good as the sauce in your pie (and not taste substantially different to it ie be the same or complement it)

and gravy is lovely made with meat juices and lots of butter! No granules please!!

And not poured over roasties, but next to them to retain the crispiness. mmm!

LisaSimpsonsbff · 11/11/2017 18:47

I get offended on behalf of my lovingly made puddings

I also feel like this when DH smothers delicious things I have made in gravy or - even worse - ketchup.

Roussette · 11/11/2017 18:47

But there's gravy and there's GRAVY isn't there?!

We are a total gravy family but only the real deal. I go all peculiar thinking of people who tip granules into a measuring jug and add boiling water bleurghhhhh awful.

When my lot are home and I do a roast I make a huge amount of proper homemade gravy world famous my gravy is and I just am in love with my massive gravy boats, two of the buggers filled to the brim Grin

Who on earth eats sausage and mash without onion gravy. --shudders-

Steaksauce · 11/11/2017 18:47

Ooooh i might hate gravy but I bloody love custard!

(I’m not a southerner either)

Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2017 18:48

I like custard but just not on things!

StefMay · 11/11/2017 18:48

Chips n gravy. I miss living up North where they do gravy sooo well

Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2017 18:50

Op, I’m from Leicester but live in Nottingham! I could have written your post myself.

NameChangeFamousFolk · 11/11/2017 18:50

I do love how the gravy lovers are convinced that gravy-haters have just been eating the wrong gravy Grin

The only explanation is that they must have just eaten crappy Bisto all their lives otherwise they too would LOVE GRAVY.

I don't even hate gravy btw.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 11/11/2017 18:51

lisa don’t get me started on dp and ds putting my ketchup on my homemade Lasagna Shock
