To buy a £300 Christmas tree?

A Balsam Hill one.

I deeply dislike the look of fake trees usually which means we spend £50+ every year on a real one, which then spends January forlorn in the garden before we get round to chopping it up and getting rid of it. It’s a ball ache.

I’ve read lots of amazing things about the BH realistic ones, and I’ve seen one we like online but it’s £318! I don’t mind investing in it but I’ve never seen one in real life and I’d rather not chuck them £30 for a sample as that seems an utter pisstake.

Does anyone here have one? Do they look super real or is it hype? The reviews are good tbf but I wanted to canvas opinions before we commit to it.

I just paid £300 for our real one - they do bring it here, decorate it and then remove it on 6 Jan for that fee but even so it is quite a bit. It's quite a big one each year.

bettytaghetti · 11/11/2017 20:02

I somehow seem to have ended up on their mailing list & so, despite being a real tree fan, was interested, as we often find it hard to find a tree suitable for our second home where we have christmas with our family because I'm an ultra fussy cow when it comes to choosing!. One year got so desperate as nowhere had any suitable trees left that I started eyeing up the hedgerows as I was driving along trying to spot something I could chop down!
Does anyone know if there are any RL stockists where we can see the trees or can anyone say what their favourite type is and how realistic it is?

Wantapony · 11/11/2017 20:57

We bought a BH tree 3 years ago and it's gorgeous. Its a 7ft Nordic Pine with very realistic spiky branches. Not pre-lit, as we wanted to do strung lights to make it look differeng and m keep it versatile. Price wise it wasn't bad as we got it at 50% off. It also
comes in a large zip bag-looks like you're hefting a body bag when
dragging it out! Customer service was great-it is an American company but ships from their UK base very quickly and easily.

We’ve just bought this one from TK Maxx. It’s 7 foot and absolutely gorgeous.

This thread might inspire me to replace my woolworths one have had a few years......

CredulousThickos · 11/11/2017 22:23

Actually I’m an atheist. It’s just a Winter festival with gifts and food and decorations in our house. More about Father Christmas than the Baby Jesus.

I’m going to be spending £135 on a tree this year. Not quite as expensive as a £300 tree but to us that is very expensive. Wanted a really nice bushy pre-lit tree that will last many years so this year I am getting it. We have always had cheap £30 max trees and they tend to look thin and quite shit after a while so treating us this year lol. I’m not even religious either but I freaking love Christmas and want a lovely tree. I’d keep it up all year if I could lol

CiderwithBuda · 12/11/2017 14:37

I bought a BH one in the sale in July. Haven't opened it yet so hope it's ok!

DH was away on business and the BH website was having issues and wouldn't accept my credit card so he got a fraud alert text from the bank. Then I tried again. Another text. Tried another card. Another text. Cue DH calling in a panic to find out what I was doing. By that time I was on the phone to BH buying over th phone. He called again. I explained. He asks what I was buying. The silence on the phone when I said it was a Christmas tree was interesting! He then had to tell a colleague what was happening as he had had to nip out of meeting. Colleague knows me well but even he was 'but it's July!'.

Hope it's worth it!

sueelleker · 12/11/2017 15:54

I'm thinking of getting a BH tree. Can anyone tell me which type is best-they do so many kinds I'm not sure what to get. When we had real trees they were fir, as that's all most shops sell. Also, is the 'foliage' quite soft?

CredulousThickos · 12/11/2017 18:05

Thanks everyone, we’ve just ordered the 6’ lit Nordmann fir so I’ll update when it arrives.

Thanks again @sriracha for the code.

Is there a particular time of year they have a big sale? The one we like is already at 40% off, jut wondering if it gets an cheaper.

Also, how much was the TK max tree, Jjacob?

Also the PP, who mentioned a narrower tree, where did you get it from?

Thanks

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 12/11/2017 18:57

credulas

Please do update

My tree is 27 years old this year

It looks fab but that's because its covered in baubles...very tempted by a BH tree

But i want a JL parasol tree for the playroom...not sure i can swing both

Barbie1 · 12/11/2017 18:59

We got one about 15 years ago and it’s still amazing. If you factor in the cost of a real tree every year we are actually saving money. It came with a 10year guarantee too

Floralnomad · 12/11/2017 18:59

From what I’ve seen this year BH don’t get cheaper than 40% off , I checked randomly from Feb to July this year when we bought ours as 40% off . We bought a narrow Fraser fir 7’ prelit , but as I said previously it is still 48” at its widest point .

Aclockworklemon · 12/11/2017 19:04

I have a 20% off code valid until tomorrow if anyone would like it? I think it's just a one off code so pm me if you would.

They have the extra 20% around this time in November every year if you sign up to the website...that was what finally persuaded me two years ago and I'm very happy with mine!

EatTheChocolateTeapot · 12/11/2017 19:10

You have already bought your tree but for others considering to buy I thoroughly recommend getting a real tree that has been pot grown (not just one that is sold in a pot as some of them are just plucked in a pot before sale and don't fare well as more roots are cut off). It's very satisfying if you have room to keep in the garden outside of the Christmas period.

boatgirl81 · 12/11/2017 19:15

Aclockworklemon, have messaged you regarding the code, if it is still available that would be fab. Don't worry if it has gone.

Looking at the norweigan which is 44" wide, hopefully will fit!

happysunr1se · 12/11/2017 19:16

I was just about to buy a BH tree last week, but then went for ikea instead.

From my research it seems the most realistic BH trees are made out of something called PE which is poured into a mould of a real 3D tree branch. Whereas cheaper trees seem to be made of pvc cut into frilly bits to imitate needles and then wrapped round wire.

As I couldn’t see the BH ones in the flesh I went to check out the ikea PE tree as it was....£19 vs £80 (BH)for the small size I wanted. The ikea was good enough for me so I saved my money and bought it. Now I got more money for the decorations to go on it at £5 a pop for those nice glass ones!

GoingRogue · 12/11/2017 20:06

Thanks for this thread OP (I started one earlier not realising this one was here!).

I'm looking at getting the 6ft pre-lit Balsam Fir for £319 here

www.balsamhill.co.uk/p/bh-balsam-fir-artificial-christmas-tree?sku=2806373

But have also seen a nice-looking comparable one with good reviews on Amazon for £99.98...

So hard to choose!

LivLemler · 12/11/2017 20:19

We have two and I love them. But then our old one cost about £30 from argos and shed more than a real tree...

Want to put the little one on a small table this year and get a huge skirt to cover the base of the tree and the table - from my rough calcs I think it will need to be about 2m in diameter - anyone know where I might get such a thing? Everything I see seems to be (logically enough) about half the size I need.
