To ask for tangible benefits of Brexit?

RiskIt4Biscuit · 10/11/2017 21:01

Some politicians are saying that we're all brexiteers now.

But I can't actually think of any tangible benefits of Brexit, and I think as a brexiteer, I should be able to list at least 3.

So how is Brexit going to make our lives better?

I could actually see that as a benefit, especially if the work is based in the regions
They are ALL in Whitehall

Peregrina · 11/11/2017 21:58

They are ALL in Whitehall

OK - not a benefit then. Obviously some accountancy and legal firms will be benefitting as their eyes light up at the thought of the Consultancy fees they will make.

Ta1kinPeece · 11/11/2017 22:00

Oh yes, the sharp suits who also give us offshore financing are gleefully raking in the fees already.
The rich will win
The poor will lose
T'was ever thus

Bring on 29/03/19

Bleurgh.

squoosh · 12/11/2017 01:17

Wealthy. right wing, tax evaders can't wait to bring on 2019. Everyone else will be fucked.

makeourfuture · 12/11/2017 07:58

It has weakened our government.

Peregrina · 12/11/2017 08:11

There can be no objection to Parliament having the vote, can there? Didn't the Brexiters vote to 'take back control' and our democracy is a Parliamentary one. It should go without saying that Parliament leads the way on this issue, not a weak PM - a PM who weakened herself by a wholly unnecessary election.

That once we have exited, threads like these will die down.

HipToBeSquare · 12/11/2017 08:23

I think you'll miss threads like this compared to what I imagine they'll be replaced with.

MissionItsPossible · 12/11/2017 08:29

Yeah yeah,I know, when Brexit happens I'll miss threads like this because the country will be forced to its knees and we'll be so poor we can't afford internet.

HipToBeSquare · 12/11/2017 08:40

Yes but I guess you'll still have your wit. That ought to see you through Hmm

Be3Al2Si6O18 · 12/11/2017 08:45

There are none that I can think of.

When I find something that could be a benefit, I see something worse that cancels it out.

makeourfuture · 12/11/2017 08:49

Yes but I guess you'll still have your wit. That ought to see you through

Well there may be a Royal wedding coming up to unite us!

CancellyMcChequeface · 12/11/2017 08:52

Avoiding Juncker's 'ever closer union' and increased federalisation.

makeourfuture · 12/11/2017 08:53

And I hear David Cameron is buying a Cornish beach house. Exciting times!

Doobigetta · 12/11/2017 09:02

I know this one! It's nearly as good for 21st century Britain as the black death was in the middle ages"

There! Can I have a badge for being patriotic and getting on board with it?

Humpsfor20yards · 12/11/2017 09:08

What really annoys people about discussing the economic and political future of their country?

StepAwayFromGoogle · 12/11/2017 09:20

Well, apparently support for the EU has increased across Europe, including in the UK (irony, much?), since the Brexit vote. So we may have helped to strengthen the union we are about to leave Grin.

In all seriousness, though:

  1. We will retain some control over our borders - that's what the majority of Brexiteers wanted. It will probably be at the expense of being in the free market, which will be a disaster being how integrated we currently are, but hey. Oh, and we won't have enough professionals to work in the NHS or workers to support our farming sector but, yay, borders.
  1. We will have more control over our laws, especially the opportunity to work outside EU human rights laws which were contentious. This is debatable, though, because the EU are very wedded to the idea that the UK should continue to be answerable to the EU Court of Human Rights - it's a huge bargaining chip. That also works both ways. It would take away the opportunity for UK citizens subject to human rights violations to have a higher level of recourse than the UK courts. Let's hope none of us never need that. And it won't make sense, given our close trading relationship with the EU, to have our trading laws very divergent. So we'll probably end up adopting a lot of them anyway.

The bottom line is that we won't get a better deal outside the EU than in it. That would be suicide for the EU itself because then every other country would be looking to leave. Economically we will be worse off.

The problem with all of this is that it's unchartered territory. No country has ever left the EU before. Our only hope is that it isn't the disaster we all think it will be. In the long term it should all work itself out. But we should prepare to be less powerful on the world stage by then and for a recession in between.

Yes but I guess you'll still have your wit. That ought to see you through Hmm

Through what?
You don't know what's going to happen, nobody does.

redexpat · 12/11/2017 09:41

Well the weak pound means that I will be able to pay off my student loan quicker because I live abroad. Thats all Ive got.

redexpat · 12/11/2017 09:42

Greenland left the EU.

TheVeryHungryDieter · 12/11/2017 09:49

Greenland didn’t leave the EU. It left the EEC over 30 years ago.

redexpat · 12/11/2017 09:58

I stand corrected!

PushingThru · 12/11/2017 10:08

I’m a remainer in a well paid recession proof career, with British and Irish dual nationality & I’m looking forward to all the retail sales.

You absolute fools. What’s coming in the next few years will make austerity look like a love tap. It’s ok if you’re like me or retired, but if you’re not, you’re fucked.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 12/11/2017 10:10

What really annoys people about discussing the economic and political future of their country?

Ooh ooh i know this one

Its something to do with democracy and if you lose you shut up forever unless its to say something positive about the winners
