To ask for tangible benefits of Brexit?

RiskIt4Biscuit · 10/11/2017 21:01

Some politicians are saying that we're all brexiteers now.

But I can't actually think of any tangible benefits of Brexit, and I think as a brexiteer, I should be able to list at least 3.

So how is Brexit going to make our lives better?

It's worth remembering that Greenland with a population of what, 50,000? and one major industry, fishing, geographically a long way from any neighbouring countries, still look three years to leave a smaller organisation. We are going to do it now in just under 17 months. I don't know about the quality of the Greenland negotiators, perhaps they were rank amateurs, unlike our own!

Rather good for the 8000 new civil servants. Less bureaucracy anyone?

At least it'll give Daily Mail readers something else to moan about when the Brexit unicorns don't turn up.

Humpsfor20yards · 12/11/2017 12:14

What people expect from brexit is varied and interesting.

I remember at the time of the ref many people saying they were voting for change and/or because they felt things couldn't get worse.

I wonder what specific changes they had in mind then and now and if that was their key motivation, are they feeling more optimistic?

Mrskeats · 12/11/2017 12:17

We did you vote for something you can’t see any benefits of??? (You can’t because there aren’t any btw) op??
People like you have massively damaged this country and now you want help to justify your stupid choices?
Unbelievable.

Mrskeats · 12/11/2017 12:18

*why

SilverSpot · 12/11/2017 12:23

Tangible benefits? It’s easier to identify twatchop people I have no desire to speak to at parties.

mrsreynolds · 12/11/2017 12:50

I've spent my weekend organising a food bank drive in my community....my Tory and leave voting community
It's going to get so much worse....
Sad

“I have seen a lot of people in the building industry lose their livelihoods because of cheap labour from European countries”

In the early 80s, it was our British building workers having to go abroad to search for work. No doubt, they put a lot of Europeans out of work.

Itinerary · 12/11/2017 13:23

Are you really a Brexiteer, OP?

Humpsfor20yards · 12/11/2017 13:25

No, I think op was making a point about how we have been repeatedly told to get over it and get behind brexit and how she is struggling to do so.

Littlegreyauditor · 12/11/2017 13:28

The shit could hit the fan again in Northern Ireland...which will give you all something just awful to ignore on the 6 o clock news.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/11/2017 13:30

I'm a remainer. DH and myself have a good business, our kids are well educated. We were doing fine thank you very much. Brexit is very scary.

BUT I have family who genuinely struggle with accessing jobs and resources because of European immigration. So I think they are entitled to vote for what will be best for them, without constantly being "remainsplained" to by people who have no idea of the realities of their lives.

There is this sneering narrative that thick people voted for Brexit. Yes because less educated unskilled people are those who suffer most from mass immigration. How is it fairly to sneer at people for voting for their own benefit? Why should they be voting so that my kid can do a bloody Erasmus year and I can still access my organic chicken? We have brought this on ourselves and there is still no acknowledgement of people's genuine right to grievance.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 12/11/2017 13:36

Tinkly

Unemployment is low. The problem is with the likes of zero hour contracts. As EU workers leave there will be shortage of skilled workers. It will take years and lots of money to train British workers for these roles.

Certain sectors are now struggling to fill lower skilled roles

Cornwall appeals to government as crops ‘rot in fields’ due to shortage in migrant labour after Brexit

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/cornwall-council-appeal-government-crops-rotting-migrant-labour-a8049391.html

So why aren't Brits queuing up for these lucrative jobs?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/11/2017 13:44

Ghost but we should have been training people for skilled jobs for years. Not subjecting them to inadequate schooling and off putting uni fees and then filling the gaps with EU labour.

Where my relatives live, the low skilled jobs are agency based, driven by profit rather than concern for workers rights) and the agencies are largely operated by Europeans, who favour other Europeans.

We have treated unskilled people like shit for years and now we are appalled that they have used their vote to try and better their situation. And I'm not saying that I think Brexit will better their situation. But no one was listening to them.

Agree sadly Government policy like scrapping bursaries for trainee Nurses isn't going to help is it?

As we are seeing the drop in EU workers isn't necessarily being filled by Brits.

and nothing will change except we'll all be poorer.

Except you don't know that

wasonthelist · 12/11/2017 13:51

Where in the linked article does it say they are lucrative jobs?

Aren't wage paid based on what you can offer? Six openings in my department unfilled for salary from 30 up to 45k up north. I'd say that's lucrative enough but we can't find skilled workers at all!

wasonthelist · 12/11/2017 14:12

WhatWot

Another poster posted a link to the article about Cornwall and asked why Brits weren’t queuing up for these “lucrative” jobs in farming. Nothing in the article suggests they are lucrative.

As for the vacancies you mention, if you cannot attract staff at the advertised salary then there are too few people around with the skills (at any price) or the salary needs to be higher to attract some. If the business can’t pay more, it’s not a viable business.

One consequence already being seen in London. A benefit for parents trying to get their kids into schools of their choice.

If your job can be taken by a barely literate Romanian who speaks no English, that says a lot more about you than it does about them.

Crap working terms, zero hours and the gig economy are a BRITISH problem.
Other EU countries have stronger employment rights.
Leaving the EU will just result in less protections for workers
not more.
