Splitting restaurant bill

idontwanttodothisanymore · 06/11/2017 14:37

I’m one of those people who like to pay for just my meal. I hate splitting the bill by how many people there are.

Me and DH went out with his friend and his OH the other day.

Mine and DH meal came to: £31.57
I had pizza and water, he had chicken and one coke.
DH friend and OH meal came to: £49.78
They had ribs, lasagne, chips and 3 drinks.

Final bill was £81.75
DH friend had two vouchers for £20 off, so they both used that.

Then the OH said we could pay the rest. So we ended up paying £41.75 - £10 more than our meal!!!

I had never met her before and was completely shocked that she wanted us to split by 4 when our meal was cheaper.
She was very intimidating anyway so I didn’t want to say anything.

We were going to do 2 bills but the waiter was all flustered so we said don’t bother. Regretting it now!

I know it’s only £10 but our circumstances are so different. They both work and she has one child - he works full time and she works part time. Whereas DH works part time (and overtime if there is any) but I don’t (I had to leave my job due to medically issues), and we have 2 children.

DH doesn’t think I should be annoyed but I really am!
AIBU to be annoyed?

I don’t think I’ll ever see her again anyway, I didn’t get a good vibe from her and she’s just not my kind of person at all.

I feel compelled to fill the thread to 1,000 posts now. What to say, what to say...

How do people feel about ordering the expensive wine Wink

DarkPeakScouter · 11/11/2017 20:04

I pay for my own meal. I dislike splitting meals as other people always order more expensive meals and drink loads. Money is tight and I budget so I can go out to dinner not to subsidise others. And my friends don’t have a problem with it.

TathitiPete · 11/11/2017 21:50

Glad you're back OP, I've been going mad to ask!
What film did you see?

idontwanttodothisanymore · 11/11/2017 23:23

@TathitiPete I have actually been keeping up to date on all the comments, just haven’t been replying!

A few times I wrote out a reply but I didn’t send it - to the people who were saying they go for meals to enjoy themselves and for the company etc.. but I didn’t particularly enjoy myself anyway! The OH was really rude and made no effort with me. I tried so hard to start conversations with her but she just wasn’t interested!

We went to see Thor.
Chris Hemsworth didn’t disappoint at all 😍

Just had lovely meal which would have sent the pay your own crowd into a flat spin. Tapas type dishes which we all shared! I failed to keep a tight account of the percentage of each dish eaten by each couple. Bill was split down the middle - we may have "subsidised" the other couple maybe 8 mouthfuls or perhaps they subsidised us? The horror. We are all equally pissd so that's fair I guess.

expatinscotland · 11/11/2017 23:51

OMG, KERALA, how gluttonous. And not on the water? Tut, tut.

TathitiPete · 11/11/2017 23:55

Ah, glad you enjoyed the movie at least Smile

Typical bill splitter! Wink

Bahhhhhumbug · 12/11/2017 03:18

We used to go out with a few couples and one of the wives was always very vocal about not believing in tipping. No money issues just on principal because nobody gave her anything extra at work blah blah . One of us used to always eat her After Eight mint on the same principle.

Rebeccaslicker · 12/11/2017 07:39

We had a brilliant tapas on Friday too. Then yesterday got treated to a surprise birthday meal which I thought was in a pub but was actually in a gorgeous restaurant up in Yorkshire. This morning it's a brunch with about 10 friends. I have been lying awake since 3am wondering who should have paid for what and what to do this morning if someone wants fizz and we have to drive home. Oh no wait, the other thing - just enjoying seeing everyone enjoying themselves!

Rebeccaslicker · 12/11/2017 07:42

Bahhh that would have really embarrassed me too. A suitable punishment (if it was anything nicer than an after eight; I would see someone eating my after eight as a reward!!). Maybe she should have worked a bit harder then she might have got a bonus at work too!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/11/2017 13:21

Oh, the goady fuckers have set up residence again trying to provoke. How sad. It's not a 'them and us' situation no matter how you try to make it one. Nobody cares what you do.

BatShite · 12/11/2017 13:41

But if all dishes were shared, it makes perfect sense to split equally? I am fairly sure noone would insist on paying for what they ate when every dish was shared, as there is no way to calculate anyway Confused

IF most of the group shared dishes and one person ordered a steak or something instead, then that one person would be fine to say they only wanted to pay for theirs (which probably would have been more expensive than the shared dishes, from my experience of getting steaks!)

Otherwise, that post is obviously just meant to goad.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 12/11/2017 14:55

Of course it was meant to goad, although to who exactly I don’t know. Currently eating out with friends, 2 of whom didn’t have a starter. Fucking inappropriate bitches Grin

Rebeccaslicker · 12/11/2017 15:53

Currently eating out with friends - and posting on mumsnet at the same time? you MUST be having a fun meal!!

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 12/11/2017 16:08

I am, thank you for thinking of me 😘

This thread came up and (even though we split the bill!) we all thought it was pretty mad that people are so against ‘pay for your own’ and each had a CF story to regale. Definitely pleased that I know the crowd that I know!

Cheese omelette:
Break eggs into a bowl, heat knob of butter in frying pan, add splash of milk to eggs, add seasoning - also fresh parsley if you like it. Beat together and add to pan. Use spatula to flip over when firm on the bottom. Add grated cheese and fold. Eat immediately.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/11/2017 16:15

Bacon sandwich:
Grill or fry bacon - when perfectly cooked slide rashers into two pieces of lightly buttered bread. Add brown and/or red sauce if liked and cut into half triangle. And serve.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/11/2017 16:17

Sausage sandwich:
Grill or fry sausages - when perfectly cooked slice in and arrange onto two pieces of lightly buttered bread. Add brown and/or red sauce if liked and cut into half triangle. And serve

HunterofStars · 12/11/2017 16:18

YANBU, Op. I prefer to pay for what I had. I've had bitter experience about bill splitting and it really did spoil things for all.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/11/2017 16:19

Omelette sandwich:
Make an omelette - when perfectly cooked sling it into two pieces of lightly buttered bread. Add brown and/or red sauce if liked and cut into half triangle. And serve

NutElla5x · 18/11/2017 17:56

It's funny how all the nasty and personal responses on this thread seem to come from the people pro splitting the bill.Anyone would think they were on the defensive, and one might wonder if this is because they are gluttonous CF's who don't like being called out for what they are.

rainbowduck · 18/11/2017 18:33

I hate eating out with people like OP.

I bet you are a delight when buying a round in the pub as well.

boywiththebrokensmile · 25/04/2018 22:57

''I hope you will forgive me saying this, but you sound way over-obsessive about money. People don't give a hoot about this kind of thing.''

easy to say when you have money, believe me there are people who do obsess over cash as they have little of it.
