Tell me I can get the whole place walloped in a weekend...

Long and boring- sorry.

We've been on the council list for a while now. Yesterday, we were offered a place. It's PERFECT.

The officer than came back to check ours. That's when we came back down to earth with a bump...

She's told us that, as the place is ready now, we may not be able to do the work in time (I asked for a week). That's painting the place magnolia, and a deep clean (we have cats).

She's going back to the office on Monday, and it would put us in good stead, I think, to be able to tell her that we've already painted, nd the deep clean is booked (it is- first thing I did)

Give me hope, please? I spent last night sobbing my heart out (unlike me- I'm one tough mf).

On a side note, we feel we should have been told what was expected of us BEFORE we viewed...we could have done it way before now!

It's mainly just me and DH. My DB will give us a few hours this afternoon, and I've had tentative offers of help from a friend- but she has so much on that I wouldn't be surprised if she cried off. (She's lovely- she's just going through a berevement)

I can see the hall being an issue, it's Noddy Hat Blue!

Please give me hope? I'm going to make a start now before the DC wake up, and I have to start working around them!

You can deff do this this. Are there any friends you can call in?

It's the same with us.. everything has to be cleaned and repainted. Which is fair enough.... but inbegrudge that when I moved into mime it was a shit hole and was grumpy.

But how is the deep clean going to happen is the place is still being painted?

And when, on Monday?

(Fag break)

The deep clean is actually booked for the Thursday. By Monday, I want to call up before she has time to put her report in, and say "tick the painting off the list, and the deep clean is booked for Thursday". Hopefully then, they'll have no grounds for taking back their offer!

I agree doing walls and ceiling white rather than magnolia walls makes it SO much easier.

Very odd of your HA to expect the place to be repainted before you leave. Mean too.

If you can get hold of one or two of these paint roller it might make the job easier. Painting virgin here - it took me 30 mins to paint a fair-sized room with 2 coats cos the first coat dried so quickly. They have a slight tendency to fall apart but you can shove them back together and carry on. And they can squirt paint tbh. But they do make the job so much faster.

Stick a post on your Facebook local page for a handyman?

Weird that you have to paint it, but definitely possible! Good luck & hope the house doesn’t fall through for you. When we moved into our first council flat it was painted entirely dark brown. They had even used dark brown gloss on the light switches and plug sockets. Inside the cupboards were also brown. The ceilings were bloody brown!! Took about a week To get rid but that’s with me being heavily pregnant, having a toddler and having to paint literally every inch of the flat!

My HA is the same, you need to leave the current property in the condition they specify or they revoke the offer of the second one. It does seem to mostly be based on colour, though, as we've been given a property that, although magnolia, was covered ceiling to floor in holes.
There are exemptions it seems, as the house we are living in now was last decorated in the 80s when we moved in. We were given vouchers for B&Q as it was excessive, but it was A LOT of decorating to do. Thankfully the new house needed a lot of essential work done too, so we were able to arrange to access to decorate whilst workmen were in for other jobs. We pointed out that the house was uninhabitable before this work was completed so we didn't have to pay as much dual rent as they'd originally suggested we'd have to.

But this is your new home. You will do this.

Why would they find yours ‘difficult to rent’ though? I thought people were crying out to be placed? Fingers crossed for you.

Thank you all so much for your support! 🐞🌷

Take photos of the new magnolia walls and email them in so they can see on Monday morning it's already been done. Good luck!

Don't forget to eat and drink -- you'd waste far more time going half speed if you're hungry and dehydrated, especially do not rely on smoking to suppress your appetite. When you reach a stopping point then rest.

Do the main entrance, living rooms and rooms with the worst colours. If you have to leave a bedroom unpainted so be it.

Sounds like a fix but don't rush and leave a bad finish just in case they decide it needs re-doing. Painting the bottom of a wall and then the top hours apart will always show. I think that how well the edges are cut in and the depth of colour are two main factors that impact the overall effect. Well that and not splattering everything in the surrounding area! Good luck hope it goes well.

Late that will be EXACTLY what I forget to do, given the chance. Totally forgot to eat yesterday with the stress! Now that my "DM" is reading this (she may as well be DM from now on- I just didn't want anyone who's read any of my other threads to get confused) I'll have no end of nagging (love the bones of her really) so I'll have to eat just to shut DH and her up!

I have, however, drunk a whole pot of filter coffee while I've been painting...

One of my "team" is ten minutes away- it's on!

Must say I'm proud of how much I've done so far. I got DD (10) to check for any bits I've missed (I'm VI). I've done a Tom Sawyer on both her and DS (get your room tidy enough for painting and I'll let you help me with the roller)

Good luck.

If you work, chuck a sickie on Monday and deep clean the flat yourself rather than wait til Thursday.

I'm sure you can do it..

When you tell them on Monday, that you have painted, I'd send them photos too, so they can see you have done it. Hopefully they will then think twice about withdrawing the offer of the new house.

Friends did an entire 3 red bungalow in a weekend. They hired a spray paint gun thing which worked brilliantly.

I know this doesn’t help, but why did you paint colours so bright? Bright noddy blue and yellow? Why didn’t you paint these months ago, when you first starting talking to Dh about wanting to move?

You said you should have been told before. Really? I don’t think you should need to be told that colours need to be toned down, preferably magnolia and also a deep clean if you have cats. I assume that’s a given. Are you genuinely surprised?

Report
Thesmallthings · 04/11/2017 10:06

I imagine she painted them that colour becayse she liked them.....

And it's a new thing that you now have to paint ha house.... I only know because a friend moved and was told.

And your nirmally have to give 4 weeks notice to move so you'd nirmally have time to do it.

Ok allready said she was going to do a deep clean. She just thought shed have more time.

Report
AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 04/11/2017 10:10

I was told originally I'd have at least a week- more if I paid duel rent for another week.

And when I moved in everywhere was random colors...I had no idea I'd have to get it back to magnolia.
