Manafort Destiny? Trump continued

Where will the charges against Manafort lead? Whose shredders are overheating today? And most importantly, when will the Tweetstorm-from-the-loo start?

I forgot to include this regardinf Puerto Rico. It’s horrifyingly sad

BuzzFeed News
@BuzzFeedNews
Puerto Rico admits 911 people died since Maria after funeral directors told BuzzFeed News they had bodies not counted in official death toll

Puerto Rico Is Burning Its Dead, And We May Never Know How Many People The Hurricane Really Killed

People whose bodies are cremated are largely not being counted in the official death toll. The government says it’s the fault of funeral directors, while funeral directors say they’ve received no guidance from the government.

Interesting.

Gates apparently represented by a public defender at his arraignment. That’s very surprising for a case of this magnitude.

lionheart · 30/10/2017 20:02

That is a fun fact and I hope the Jeff "I don't recall" Sessions goes down with the rest.

10 million bail???

I do find the US bail system a bit strange, to say the least.

lettuceWrap · 30/10/2017 20:14

Pain, the Puerto Rico story is absolutely shocking.
I think news about the bleakness of the PR situation 6 weeks post hurricane is getting “lost” (by accident or design), amongst the constant crises, scandals and outrages of the Trump presidency. There is so much NOISE, lots of things that should be headline news and priorities for action are being kicked into the long grass and forgotten Sad

cricketballs3 · 30/10/2017 20:19

reported on BBC

Ukrainian lawmaker Serhiy Leshchenko - who helped to expose the "black ledger" which appeared to show secret payments to Manafort made by former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych - called the charges against Manafort "great news".

"I’m very much satisfied, because Manafort was involved in high-level corruption in Ukraine," he told Radio Free Europe.

"He helped one of the most corrupt persons in the world to be elected president," he said, referring to Manafort's work as an adviser to the former Ukrainian president.

PainInTheEerie · 30/10/2017 20:21

At what point does it become politically acceptable for other countries to step in and assist the Puerto Ricans? I think that it’s unlikely to ever happen but how heartbreaking that they are being abandoned by the US and because it is the US doing the abandoning, no one else will intervene. I could be wrong but I can’t see how any other country would step in without it being seen as a massive slight (and all those lives be damned Sad)

Brad Heath
@bradheath
Mueller's office said in a court filing that Trump aide George Papadopolous "indicated that he is willing to cooperate with the government."
This is significant. Papadopolous agreed to cooperate with Mueller in July, and Mueller didn't want his cooperation known.
Which raises the question of who Papadopolous talked to after he was arrested. Those people likely are not having a nice morning.

Daniel Dale
@ddale8
Papadopoulos is described as "proactive cooperator." Former prosecutor tells me that sometimes means "wore a wire."

AcrossthePond55 · 30/10/2017 20:26

That bail is a joke! You only have to post bond for 10%. For Manafort that's $1m, and for Gates $500k. Chump change for them.

AcrossthePond55 · 30/10/2017 20:29

Pain I'm wondering if other countries not stepping to help PR is a symptom of the anti-Trump feeling in other countries. Maybe they think "Let Trump figure it out, it's his problem" not realizing that he doesn't give a rat's ass about the people of PR.

Papadopoulos' unnamed "supervisor" is Sam Clovis, and the "high-ranking" official is Manafort, source tells @Isikoff

But they quote one unidentified campaign “supervisor” as emailing him in August 2016 that “I would encourage you” to make a trip to Moscow to arrange such a meeting. A Trump campaign source identified the supervisor as Sam Clovis, a conservative radio host who was co-chairman of the campaign. Another “high ranking” official — identified by the source as campaign chairman Paul Manafort — received an email from Papadopoulos saying that “Russia has been eager to meet Mr. Trump for quite some time and has been reaching out to me to discuss.” Manafort forwarded that email to his associate Richard Gates and wrote: “Let’s discuss. We need someone to communicate that DT is not doing these trips. It should be someone low level in the campaign so as not to send any signal.” (Some of these emails were quoted in a Washington Post story this past August that first identified Clovis, Manafort and Gates as the campaign officials who sent and received them.)

Renato Mariotti
@renato_mariotti
Sam Clovis was co-chair of the Trump campaign and was nominated to be Undersecretary of Agriculture. Could be Mueller’s next target.

PainInTheEerie · 30/10/2017 20:32

across didn’t mexico make a very dignified offer of help when Harvey hit? I’m thinking that it might have been more politically acceptable because the US efforts weren’t being called into question in the same way there are for Puerto Rico, whereas if they were to offer help now it would be a tacit acknowledgement of the White House response? Could have this all wrong though

PainInTheEerie · 30/10/2017 20:52

AltEP
@ActualEPAFacts
White House STAFF Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner do not accept a salary (Reed Cordish is the only other individual not pulling a salary). 1/
These people are given more power and authority than any other people within the WH.
Now, in reference to George Papadopoulos, @realDonaldTrump's lawyer is using the argument that "he was never paid" by the campaign.
This is an effort to excuse all of his actions. There are laws that affect employees of the executive branch.
Are Jared and Ivanka sidestepping these legal requirements because they do not accept a salary? The answer is YES.
I implore @CNN, @MSNBC & all journalists to point out that payment from the campaign doesn't gauge level of involvement (see Ivanka & Jared)

Flake just now told me Congress would push back if Trump were to fire Mueller or seek pardons of the three. Warns it's the "third rail"

cozietoesie · 30/10/2017 21:21

It references a passage in a very very fine book - arguably the greatest book - about the Vietnam war: Michael Herr’s ‘Despatches’. I doubt that 45 has ever read a book on the Vietnam War.

cozietoesie · 30/10/2017 21:23

Sorry. ‘Dispatches’. (My Autocorrect is trying to assert itself.)

Popehat @ popehat
hfs, Mueller got a judge to find a waiver of Manafort's attorney-client privilege under the crime-fraud exception
Hard to overstate how big and unusual and aggressive that is. Mueller ain't playing beanbag.

Law and Policy @ davidallengreen
If Meuller as somehow got an order putting aside lawyer-client privilege, on the fraud exemption, then this is hard-core investigation.

Unescorted · 30/10/2017 21:31

How can they say GP had a very limited role when he is clearly pictured at the table with DT at a National Security meeting on 31st March 2016? There is only 13 of them.
