If Gates has a public defender its either to prove that he isn't part of Trump's Gang (because they aren't fronting for a fancy pants legal team) OR the Trump Gang has hung him out to dry.

It's also interesting because PDs are only for those who 'can't afford' to pay a lawyer. Meaning not only do you not have any 'ready cash' but you have no credit nor assets with which to secure loans. I suppose it could be that he hasn't had time to retain a lawyer and the PD was only used to enter his plea. Who knows. I think we're all looking for 'deeper meaning' or 'theories' in everything that's coming out when the answer might be nothing more than what's already there.
