Tattoos

DaisyRaine90 · 29/10/2017 13:24

DP doesn’t want me to get any more (I have 3 In discreet places)

I want a cuff tattoo to cover self harm scars and a Phoenix to symbolise me rising from the ashes on my back.

Would I be U to get them done anyway even though he doesn’t want me to?

And AIBU to have one in a visible place (cuff)
Would it be better to have a tattoo or self harm scars on show?

I might enter a social work or academic profession and would like to run a shop one day. Would a tattoo hold me back at all or are we in a modern era?

I already had the tattoos before we met (and the two planned which I wanted)

Do you have tattoos? Do you regret them? Has it affected your work in anyway?

Thanks 😊

Oh pinterest.

You seriuosly offer careers advice while claiming that's a chat-style mannerism?

This is so, so funny.

You are pulling me up on a chat forum, for a bit of chat speak (which it is by the way!), while the whole rest of the internet, including top professionals, (including the people you hire and fire btw) lol, rofl and abbreviate their way through conversations, every single day.

Just so you know, I used to Admin/PA and write a lot of very profesional communnications.
I have run shops, hired and fired people, and generally did well.

Funnily enough there have never been any problems with my grammer in a professional setting.

The fcat that you are still pulling meup on it, rather than responding properly to my points, says a lot about you.

I have visible tattoos & work in financial services, my last Director was covered in tattoos, I think not expecting to see tattoos in a professional environment is outdated now.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 29/10/2017 14:14

Oh and apologies for typos, but as it's a chat forum, and not a legal document, I didn't bother to spell check.

But anyway.....sorry for the stupid derail op.

I'd do it if you want it.

I have never found my cuff tattoo to be a barrier to any job I've done.

DownstairsMixUp · 29/10/2017 14:15

God the poster who doesn’t employ people because they have tattoos sounds like she’d be one of them bosses that everyone hates!

Go for it op, I’m a student nurse and have a sleeve, lots of the staff do as well, one of our consultants has the most amazing sleeve I’ve ever seen, it’s clearly not made any difference to him! I’ve had tattoos for years btw and it’s never stopped me getting work or getting in to this course, I’ve had offers of jobs to for when I qualify.Grin

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 29/10/2017 14:16

fridgepants I think I love you a little bit for this sentance... Grin

If you are this prescriptivist about how one should conduct casual discussion then I don't think the OP should require your advice on acceptability of tattoos.

JacquesHammer · 29/10/2017 14:18

YANBU OP. I have countless tattoos and it has never impacted on me getting a job in the slightest.

specialsubject · 29/10/2017 14:19

Now that it is more unusual not to have tattoos, unless it is 'hate' scribbled across hands or face I cant see it being an office employment issue. Still less if you are your own boss.

However I think they cost a lot. Have you got the cash?

JacquesHammer · 29/10/2017 14:19

Just to add - teachers at DD's school, several visible tattoos.

Visit to A&E a few weeks ago, several visible tattoos including a nurse with the most beautiful sleeve.

I am at University, I will be working in a shop or cafe for a bit, then once I graduate either do my masters in social work or psychology. If psychology I will pursue an academic career.
I’m on the fence because both have advantages and disadvantages. I would like to work in one of those fields, and in about 9 years we are also going to start a shop as a family business for the children (teenagers then) to earn their pocket money, because it’s one of my dreams and because my health is not fantastic so I could employ someone else to do most of the work Once my body gives out and continue it as an income until I’m old and grey I would say until I retire but never planning to do that

I would also love to do some life coaching and write a novel, but it’s not as random as it all sounds and actually my life plan for the rest of my life is fairly coherent considering most people don’t know what they want for Christmas let alone what job they want to be doing at 70 😂

Oh come on, that is utter bs.

HateHomework · 29/10/2017 14:24

I used to know a very, very good lawyer, who was full body suited with tattoos.
He used to go to conventions etc.
Agreed but I bet none of them were visible

DH is covered in them but very corporate and nothing can be seen

OP it depends not the profession so it d help you to know what you're planning to do. I hire staff and there are certain roles I wouldn't mind if they had even neck tattoos but others I wouldn't accept it . To be on the safe side and because you don't know which employer you're dealing with i wouldn't have anything visible

Wrt to OH sorry I wouldn't do it behind his back not because I like to please men as a PP said but because I don't like doing stuff behind his back I just don't fancy this "it's my body" relationship . Next thing you know he ll do something similar to you, would you be happy with this?

DaisyRaine90 · 29/10/2017 14:24

My kids will be going to prestigious prep and boarding schools so DP is concerned about us fitting in in those circles I guess? I won’t anyway I am barely middle class 😂

OP posts:
DaisyRaine90 · 29/10/2017 14:27

He’s happy about the big one on my back but has asked me not to get anything on my hands, neck or wrists as he’s concerned it might affect me socially and my career prospects.

If I’m still convinced in a couple of years I’m sure I’ll win out.

The scars are fairly shallow as mostly cigarette burns and I have asked my tattooist and she thinks it will cover well but would need more frequent touch ups than if not on scar tissue 😊

By academic career I mean research assistant/ researcher/ lecturer.

It’s not BS- gone are the days where people got tattoos to be “different”. Most people now have at least 1 tattoo

Dustbunny1900 · 29/10/2017 14:28

There are definitely more people with tattoos than without I think, but granted those are probably cute little ankle tats of tinkerbelle, a flower, or your astrological sign. Not talking face or neck tats , or letters on fingers etc. it really depends where and if what these tattoos are re: acceptability.

DaisyRaine90 · 29/10/2017 14:30

This kind of thing 😊

The attitude that permeates of “visible tattoos will hold you back” is nothing more than projection.
You mean, you and your antiquated ideas of what constitutes responsibility/stability/normality would hold them back.
There’s quite a few people out there with tats, body piercings etc that have progressed to a perceived high standard.
You tell people a lot about yourself when you say that such body art would hold people back.

AlkaSeltzing · 29/10/2017 14:33

Oh, and OP...do what you want. Your body, your farm, your rules. :)

Creambun2 · 29/10/2017 14:34

Tattoos are more common yes. Do you honestly believe that most people in the UK have a tattoo? Really? Utter rubbish.

TabbyMumz · 29/10/2017 14:34

I don't think there are more people with tattoos than without, but there are definitely more people getting tattoos than ever before. I do agree a bit though with the comment further up, that as so many have tattoos these days, it is nice to seem to be different (in some circumstances), not to have one. On holiday a few years ago, we were the only ones around the pool with none. I don't know what cuffs are, but I think sleeves are horrible, they just look like a load of pictures merging into one. A clean arm would look much nicer.....but that's my opinion.

wrenika · 29/10/2017 14:37

Your body, your choice.
Honestly, I think it's really hard to predict how they will affect jobs because it depends on individual employers. Some people will say they wouldn't hire because of tattoos, but I work in a professional environment where people have visible tattoos and nobody cares. It shouldn't matter - it doesn't change your ability to do a job. Unfortunately, some people still have problems making that connection! And it's their loss.
