Yes some people are manipulative and scheming derxa. Regardless, it is still a rotten system. It's only in a rotten system that it would even be possible to 'prostitute yourself'

RedToothBrush · 27/10/2017 11:04

If women in the work place can be 'prostitutes' then why are they the only ones vilified and not the men who are the 'kerb crawlers'?

RedToothBrush · 27/10/2017 11:05

Clue: Because women are there to be blamed and man are there to not bear responsibility for their own actions.

SmileEachDay · 27/10/2017 11:05

Because they are women Red. It must be their fault.

Uokbing · 27/10/2017 11:08

Surely prostitution as an industry can only be successful in an environment where women are seen as inhuman objects.

I guess sits a chicken and egg thing: did prostitution come about because women were treated like objects to fuck by men? Or do men treat women like objects to fuck because some of them are prostitutes?

RidingWindhorses · 27/10/2017 11:13

Are we saying that all actresses/singers/models/dancers are innocent victims of a rotten system? Surely some of them are manipulative and scheming?

We (I) am saying that they are all, male and female, victims of a corrupt system. If some of them are manipulative and scheming it's irrelevant. Sex offences are offences.

derxa · 27/10/2017 11:15

Sex offences are offences. I totally agree with you.

surferjet · 27/10/2017 11:21

Lweji

I’m talking about the ‘entertainment’ industry - which is, in the main, based on sex.
Boy bands & girl bands are put together because they’re all young, good looking & ‘sexy’ - sex sells in this industry & the people entering it know that. Of course you don’t have to be great looking to be an actor or singer, but it’s a requirement for a lot of jobs. So from the off the industry writes off millions of hopefuls because they just don’t look right. That’s annoying in itself. And of course it’s completely wrong for bosses to abuse their position, totally wrong, but this thread is about what MC has witnessed as an actor himself, & that does go on. How do we get that to stop?
What do you suggest?

Clawdy · 27/10/2017 11:31

He's not saying it's right. He's saying it happens. And it does. He's certainly not a twat.

Battleax · 27/10/2017 11:55

He isn't a twat, he made a reasonable observation. Just because the HW scandal has shown how women are victims of sexual abuse doesn't mean that many women do use their wiles to get what they want. It has always been the case, don't make the mistake of thinking otherwise.

Yes he is.

Because if within days of a scandal like the HW awfulness breaking, the only point a male actor has to make in a (semi) public place about is all is along the lines of "Yeah but some actresses are slags", the NRA missing both the point and a sensitivity chip.

It's reminiscent of the way the sex abuse scandals in Rotherham and other towns were essentially buried by "Yeah but jailbait hussies" attitudes.

OP posts:
Battleax · 27/10/2017 11:55

Don't know where the NRA comes into this Hmm

Battleax · 27/10/2017 11:58

If women stopped using sex to further their careers then all this would end.
But they won’t. So it will carry on.

I don't even know where to start surferjet. You are a neanderthal, a rape apologist and utterly clueless.

Are these boy band members - even though that make it and come out of the experience very disillusioned - often exploited and come out of the experience with fuck all whilst the executives get all the cash? Its not a good example really because there are so many who are victims in this and don't make it.

Their naivety as well as their youthful good looks is what makes them attractive to record labels...

papayasareyum · 27/10/2017 12:06

denying the fact that there is truth in Martin Clune’s words is equal to putting your fingers in your ears and going tra la la la la la

Battleax · 27/10/2017 12:08

I think the fact that he's making those remarks at this time, show his fingers are firmly in his ears and he's tralalaing for all he's worth.

Clearly he's not keen to address the rottenness uncovered in the HW scandal.

I thought this thread would be a reference to his behaviour on HIGNFY - suggesting sloping off to a pole dancing club after the show - oh how they all laughed. Loads of boys' club innuendoes with Kirsty Walk the token woman surrounded by egotistical white men, trying to hold her own but being subtly put down all the time. It made me gag. I'd always assumed he was quite innocuous until i watched that. But it put me off, and now this too.

RebelFreddyVSRogueJason · 27/10/2017 12:11

The thought process of some people is mind boggling.
So if no woman ever exchanged sex for favours the men would stop expecting and demanding it?
And no it doesn’t happen in big money industries.
When i first moved here i got a job in an internet cafe. Boss asked me to go shopping for supplies with me. On the way he kept saying what a good job I’m doing, how he’s opening a new one with a cafe, and if I keep doing well he’d put me there, with more hours and more responsibility and a raise.. bla bla fuckity bla. Got supplies and on the way back he started touching me, say things like “I’ll have a bath tonight and wank thinking of you” and other crude suggestions about just leaning over(he was driving) and having sex with him.
My luck was that I didn’t actually need the job so once I was safely out of the car i told him exactly in how many ways he can fuck off. However, many of the girls did need the job and the money, they had kids to feed and bills to pay and the promise of more money when you’re desperate goes a long way. I know I wasn’t the first and I’m sure I wasn’t the last.
And that’s in a fucking internet cafe, minimum wage job.

AhhhhThatsBass · 27/10/2017 12:28

I may get flamed for this but could it be that he has a valid point?Albeit one that he might want to keep to himself?

honeyroar · 27/10/2017 12:29

Ive served Martin Clunes too. He was the most down to earth, polite celebrity I've ever met (and I've met quite a lot in my line of work). His wife was with him too, they seemed very relaxed and happy - she joined in our conversation too. They just seemed like regular people, no airs and graces. They were with us for 11 hours - fake niceness usually slips at some point on long flights!

Andy1981 · 27/10/2017 12:30

That some women, and some men too, use their attractiveness to get ahead doesn't not excuse a man in a position of power using it to abuse young girls. Sickening to see these sort of comments defending Weinstein on Mumsnet. Hopefully you will bring your sons up better.

hardhatfirmlyon · 27/10/2017 12:38

He's not saying it's right. He's saying it happens. And it does. He's certainly not a twat

This ^^

Also Sickening to see these sort of comments defending Weinstein on Mumsnet. Where are these comments?

StrictlyPannnn · 27/10/2017 12:49

I don't think he is a twat.

I do think he is insulated from the violence, and hasn't engaged his brain or imagination. There is a world of difference between 'flirting' for hope of being noticed, and practicing sexual violence on numerous women over decades. MC has conflated these issues.

Not a twat. Just a bit dumb.

BMW6 · 27/10/2017 12:54

Women are not always victims ffs. A woman can use a man for sex just as much as vise versa. Her body, her choice. Some women may choose to use their sexuality to gain an advantage - they are not victims!
HW is a prick. But don't pretend that all women are always victims.

We are equal with men - and just as capable of being predatory.

whiskyowl · 27/10/2017 12:59

"Some women may choose to use their sexuality to gain an advantage - they are not victims!"

The fact that this is even possible is an indicator of how all women are disadvantaged by gender power imbalances. When we hear as frequently about men being forced to sleep with women to further their careers as we do about women being forced to sleep with men, then we can start taking gender out of the equation.

(I am not denying that there is homosexual exploitation in saying this, I'm pointing out that the heterosexual dynamic is skewed by a significant power imbalance).
