Paying £100's for mongrels

dimondjedi9 · 25/10/2017 19:09

All I have seen on Facebook is adverts selling so called ‘designer’ puppies for ridiculous amounts of money.
All these Jackerpoos, cockerpoo, yorkieshit etc are basically mongrels, it amazes me why people would pay £700+ for a mongrel.
The definition of mongrel is:
Any animal resulting from the crossing of different breeds or types.
We rescued our little Westie from travellers, she had been bred and bred until she became of no use, the amount of different puppies they were selling was unreal, crossing them with everything.
Surely the worry will be that if these dogs keep being inbred all the time then the true breed will disappear, Facebook should ban the selling of any animal, especially on the run up to xmas!

Well I know that. I've been showing dogs for 15 years. How anyone would have known my bitch was spayed is beyond me. She certainly did well in the show ring despite missing her womb Hmm

By the way, not everyone shows because they want to breed. In fact, most of the exhibitors I know have never bred and do it because they enjoy it.

Irish Wolfhounds? I wouldn't call them an unpopular breed in the slightest.

Wolfiefan · 29/10/2017 18:07

They're not exactly Labradors are they?!
Everyone knows everyone else. The advice I had was not to spay.
At the end of the day I will do what is best for her (when she's fully grown)

ProfessorCat · 29/10/2017 18:22

Clearly they're not Labradors...

You know every single person that shows Wolfhounds in the UK?

That's pretty impressive. I have an actual rare breed and don't know everyone after 15 years and am well known in the breed.

Wolfiefan · 29/10/2017 18:28

Most of them? Pretty much!
You're being rather rude.

CornflakeHomunculus · 29/10/2017 18:37

Unless the coat is affected then judges really shouldn't be penalising bitches for being spayed. It's a bit different for dogs as the lack of testicles is considered a fault but even then, it's not the fault above all others and castrated dogs should still be judged fairly.

If you know of judges who are basing their decisions in the ring on information they have which can't be gleaned from going over the dog then I'd be complaining about them to the KC.

Shadowboy · 29/10/2017 18:39

Ours was an expensive cross- breed but we'd been waiting for this particular cross for over a year as the lady who breeds them only breeds one litter every three years. Ours is a working dog- bred as a guard dog but never cut it sadly - she is a Rhodesian Ridgeback x Doberman Pincher. Stunning huge dog with excellent health tests but sadly useless out guarding!

ProfessorCat · 29/10/2017 18:43

Rude? I said that was impressive. I know a few Wolfhound owners who show regularly - I'll ask them if they know of a Mumsnetter going by your name next time I speak to them.

Maelstrop · 29/10/2017 19:01

Maybe bring back dog licences costing £500+if animal is unneutered and £10 if it is. Neutered licence for life, unneutered every 12 months

No, because as ever, just like in the equine passport system, the law abiding owners have passports and the ones who don't care/flygraze don't so can't be traced. You're supposed to chip all puppies you produce, but I've yet to see that.

Wolfhounds? Think I've seen one irl ever, so I'd say rare in England, given I'm out daily with my dog in various places and yards.

Re spaying: pyometra can kill, I'd definitely spay if I had a bitch. Boys I'd leave well alone unless medically necessary. The jury is out on leaving entire v neutering, but all the research I've read leans more towards leaving them alone. The leggy look mentioned is due to lack of testosterone helping to close the growth plates, so early neutering is a very poor idea, imo.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/10/2017 19:18

I feel the same way Maelstrop

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Wolfiefan · 29/10/2017 19:28

Why would you ask about me Professor? Bit odd! And Wolfie isn't my real name!
I can only go on what I have been told in the breed by people who have been showing much longer than me!
I won't spay before 2.
After that I will go on vet advice. TBH I have zero intention of ever breeding. She's a pet. We show as a day out and to meet othe people interested in the breed. It would be much easier for me to deal with a spayed bitch (no seasons, no reason to restrict walks and no worry about pyo.) But I will go with what our vet recommends knowing her full history.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/10/2017 20:10

Wolfie isn't my real name

What? Am I the only person using my real name?

Bugger!

Agree with you about not spaying a large breed early, as they don't mature until their second or third year.

Wolfiefan · 29/10/2017 20:16

Haha Schadenfreude!
Thankfully I fully trust my vet. Welfare first of course. Always. Two is the earliest recommended I believe.

ProfessorCat · 29/10/2017 20:17

Wolfie isn't my real name

Oh! I had no idea! I thought you'd got a dog to match your name!

I wouldn't spay before 2.

Wolfiefan · 29/10/2017 20:29

Not sure why the snide comments.
I can only go on what I have been told by those in the breed.
Not sure why you would ask around about me. So strange.

ProfessorCat · 29/10/2017 20:33

Oh, just because everyone is pretty friendly in the dog show world. If you're well known in your breed like you say you are, it's interesting in a "hey, I came across someone else with Wolfhounds the other day" kind of way, isn't it?

Wolfiefan · 29/10/2017 20:45

I'm not well known! I have followed the breed a long time and wanted one for ages. Just because I recognise people in the ring doesn't make me a "name"
You're not coming across as friendly at all. Not sure what I have said that's so off.
I was told you can't show a spayed bitch. By numerous people.

ProfessorCat · 29/10/2017 21:03

Ah ok, you did say you knew them all.

Well you can show a spayed bitch. I have done. She did very well. Hopefully I won't have to return my Crufts rosettes.

Wolfiefan · 29/10/2017 21:22

Perhaps you could drop the sarcasm now?!
I know them. They aren't all my personal friends. People talk.
I have been told by both people in the breed and at ringcraft that you can't spay and show. I know you can get some kind of authorisation from the KC but it was strongly implied that was for emergency style pyo etc related spay.
Congratulations on Crufts BTW. We are qualified but if this is how "friendly" it is then maybe I will give it a miss. Spayed or not!

ProfessorCat · 29/10/2017 21:31

But clearly they're wrong, because you can!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/10/2017 21:31

I have been told by both people in the breed and at ringcraft that you can't spay and show.

I wonder if the people saying this mean that your dog is likely to lose condition and not show well, Wolfie, rather than you are literally banned from showing.

I don't show, but know a few people who do, and I've also been told that judges tend to favour un-neutered animals because they usually feel that if you are showing it's because you have a good dog, and if it's that good you should be prepared to breed it and propagate those good genes. I don't know how true this is, though.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/10/2017 21:32

Professor Cat

Don't you think your snide remarks have gone far enough? Is it really so necessary for you to have the last word?

calli335 · 29/10/2017 21:37

Too many unwanted dogs waiting for loving homes. Unethical to be supporting the puppy trade imo

ProfessorCat · 29/10/2017 21:41

Why do you care what I do? I'll do as I please, thanks.

NumberEightyOne · 29/10/2017 21:46

You may well do as you please Professor Cat, but when you come onto a public forum and behave rudely and aggressively, don't expect not to be criticized for it.

Wolfiefan · 29/10/2017 21:48

Schadenfreude
Struggling to spell your name! Blush
No literally told it was banned. You "can't". And by people from ringcraft too. Weird.
Well I won't be breeding and if it's better for her health longer term (complicated with this breed. Heart issues etc) then I will spay. If that means no showing then never mind. I would declare it. I am not a deceptive person.
My dog is my pet. Yes she's a pedigree. I love the breed. But I didn't get her to show.
Sorry to derail the thread. Just not clear. Even on KC website. Says you can apply to show a neutered dog. No mention of what situation this is approved.
Steep learning curve!
