To refuse lift to smoker because she smells?

Obviously not as blunt as that but she lights up just before getting in the car and it stinks. So AIBU to tell her to get the bus if she can't wait?

Myrtle - by that I meant that there is no longer a problem with presents that smell of smoke. He was actually a lovely guy. But he'd been addicted - and acknowledged that he's been addicted - at a very young age. He actually reckoned that he'd been lucky getting to the age he did.

karriecreamer · 23/10/2017 17:11

We used to have to fumigate aerate any presents that came from dh's parents as his dad smoked the occasional cigar and the presents would arrive impregnated with the smell.

As an accountant, many clients will bring in a box/bag of paperwork. You can tell where there's an office/home with a smoker. The paperwork stinks. I have to handle it and afterwards, my hands will stink, even after several washes. When I get home, my OH knows that I've been handling smokey paperwork as he can smell it on me. Even when the paperwork has been returned, I can still smell the lingering stink in the office a few days later. There've been some really bad clients who are clearly chain smokers who I've had to tell to take their books elsewhere. I'd rather not have their business to have to put up with their stinky paperwork.

'by that I meant that there is no longer a problem with presents that smell of smoke'

Yes I know is what you meant, that's why I went Shock.

WitchesHatRim · 23/10/2017 17:13

Dear me op, I think you've upset all the whinyarse smokers who don't realise how much they smell.

Well that kind if comment says a lot about you....

I'm not a smoker. Never have been but some of these posts are way OTT

lizzieoak · 23/10/2017 17:15

Same for me with some dog owners. People who never give their dogs a bath - the owners go nose blind, but the rest of us don’t. I don’t dislike dogs, but some of them pong. In a different way than smokers. YANBU.

PandorasXbox · 23/10/2017 17:22

Has the OP been back yet?

RubMyRhubarb · 23/10/2017 17:25

I don't think anyone is disputing that smoking stinks. I smoke and I know it stinks. I'm not disputing that you could smell smoke on me/my clothes after I'd been smoking. I'm questioning how rapidly this delightful aroma is transferred to other fabrics just through a fairly short amount of contact.

One of my jackets, which I washed mid week and haven't worn since until today, I was smoking in, outside earlier. You're telling me that if I just sat in your car for a short amount of time, whatever smoke smell might be on my jacket is transferred to your upholstery? To such an extent that you could smell it days later? I'm not sure why such a concentration would be absorbed into the back of my jacket, and the back of my jeans (because unless there's funny business then those are the only parts of my clothing that would be in contact with your upholstery)

I'm not defending smoking, we all know it's shit, and I'm not denying that SMOKE can be absorbed into fabrics, nor am I denying that you could probably smell cigarette smoke on ME. I'm questioning this whole instantaneous irreversible transfer claim.

Ceto · 23/10/2017 17:28

victoire, if you think that smoking makes you one of the cool kids, you instantly condemn yourself as someone who will never be cool.

Viviennemary · 23/10/2017 17:30

I don't like smoke. I wouldn't like a dog in the car either. However a bit rude to say so.

llangennith · 23/10/2017 17:30

Why on earth can't you just tell her you won't have anyone smoking in your car? She can get the bus or respect your decision. Her choice.

prettybird · 23/10/2017 17:30

In a word. Yes.

To show how easily it impregnates, ds was once given a soft toy as present from his aunt. It came - wrapped - via his grandfather's house (the one I mentioned earlier). It was only there - fully wrapped - for a day.

It took two weeks for the smell to leave the teddy.

Ceto · 23/10/2017 17:31

Yeah that's unreasonable and a bit mean

But it's not unreasonable and mean to expect a favour off someone whilst simultaneously stinking their car out because of your totally unnecessary habit?

RedForFilth · 23/10/2017 17:34

RubMyRhubarb stop making out you're different from other smokers. Did you not know (according to many on MN), that smokers are just one homogeneous mass, all totally the same, inconsiderate arseholes who don't shower, wash their clothes, and blow smoke into non smokers mouths?

idontthinkthisisnormal · 23/10/2017 17:37

Say yes to lift but ask please don't smoke just before you get into the car. The smell on smokers makes me gag and I would actually be sick (ex smoker so probably really over the top) but it's true!

Laiste · 23/10/2017 17:41

I think it's really funny how some smokers here who think they don't smell (and/or that we should pretend not to notice or care) are then trying to swing their argument by crying out ''what about shit and vomit?!'' ConfusedGrinGrin

I mean, personally no, i wouldn't want shit and vomit in my car either.

Last time i went for a meal the waitress was a nice enough woman but every time she came and went she left a trail of stale fag smoke behind. It was 'orrible.

I think that the smell is more noticeable these days are we're not subjected to it so much everywhere any more.

Laiste · 23/10/2017 17:42

a trail of stale fag smoke smell that should say.

kali110 · 23/10/2017 17:42

I hate the smell of smoke, im asthmatic and it can aggravate it but some of these responses are just awful!
I'd rather be friends with a smoker than some on here Confused

RubMyRhubarb · 23/10/2017 17:44

PrettyBird

I just re-read your earlier post to see what we're talking about and I'm unclear, was the house where the gift was stored being smoked in when the gift was there? If it was then I can believe that being a soft toy it could smell of smoke, except that you say it was wrapped and only there for one day. If the house was being smoked in then we are talking about different things. If it wasn't then I just can't believe your claim.

So was the house being smoked in during that 24 hour period?

Oh for goodness sake!
What is is about MN and smokers? Complete over-reaction.
I can't believe in the space of about 25 years, we have gone from allowing smoking pretty much anywhere to quibbling about one smoker (who was not even smoking!) sitting in a car.

I know, isn't it fantastic. Its called progress. Dirty anti-social disgusting habit.

BuzzKillington · 23/10/2017 17:48

No way - I hate the stench of fag breath.

ethelfleda · 23/10/2017 17:54

You're telling me that if I just sat in your car for a short amount of time, whatever smoke smell might be on my jacket is transferred to your upholstery? To such an extent that you could smell it days later?

No, it wouldn't. I don't smoke. I have given lifts to smokers and no, my car doesn't still smell of smoke for days. Maybe I don't have a sensitive nose. Maybe I don't go looking for things to be offended by? Who knows. But you'd be welcome in my car if you needed a lift.
Personally I think there is an element of people knowing that it is a smoker that was in their car and still banging on about the smell days later because they can then feel superior to the 'disgusting selfish smokers' and be all smug about how they would never 'have such a filthy habit' Hmm

The worst is giving a lift to someone with BO or coffee breath. Those smells turn my stomach!

lettuceWrap · 23/10/2017 17:56

Rubmyrubarb,
In answer to your question, the smell of cigarette smoke transfers pretty fast, particularly into natural fabrics.

I find the smell of cigarettes very unpleasant (even worse than vomit or awful air freshener/synthetic perfume smells). No one gets to smoke in our house or cars.

DH is a Dr and it's not unusual for him to come home after making a house call (10or 15 min) to a smoker patient absolutely stinking of cigarettes, even though none ever smokes while he's there.
It can take days for the smell to go.

User843022 · 23/10/2017 17:58

'The worst is giving a lift to someone with BO or coffee breath. Those smells turn my stomach!'

No no it's got to be the very pungent clinique aromatics perfume, always sprayed liberally to ensure lasting damage . Urgh.

RubMyRhubarb · 23/10/2017 18:00

ethel

Excellent post. So far it's the only one that actually answers my question.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/10/2017 18:05

Myrtle I agree, that is a horrid smell. Just seeing your reference to it made me instantly smell it.
