Aibu to buy Jo Malone advent calendar?

I put my name on a waiting list for one back in February, I didn't think I'd get one as they are very sought after.
The shop rang me today to say I'd got one!
It's £300 which I have got but now I'm thinking it's hugely extravagant and a bit self indulgent.
I could do much more useful things with that money like put it towards Christmas presents etc.
But I would love it and don't often treat myself,
Aibu to have it, just this once?

Makes sense. EL will probably have counted the beans and then taken most of the good stuff out. They will trade on the name and the little black ribbons for a while yet I think.

I’ve obviously changed my mind. OP don’t get the JM calendar. Take your £300 and get acquainted with Diptyque. Not the calendar though. Skin care isn’t their forte and the mini candles only last one or two evenings.

I loved having the calendar but for my money I could have had one of their giant candles and a couple of the regular sized in my favourite fragrances.

Come back OP and tell us what you’re getting!

Ishouldbedoingsomething · 22/10/2017 15:02

Professorcat - do you sell your candles?

ProfessorCat · 22/10/2017 15:59

I used to, I haven't made any since the summer though as I'm skint and can't afford the supplies! Wax melts are good sellers though if you're thinking about it.

When do Aldi have their candles in? We use a lot of candles as the downstairs loo doesn’t have ventilation, so we usually burn one in there. So cheap is ok.

Still have an unused Jo Malone candle from the great giveaway months ago that someone posted about on here. I do love the shower oil I bought to get the free candle but not sure I could justify £32 for shower oil again!

OP if you want to get it then just do it as you can afford it, otherwise you would be silly not to buy it and sell on eBay...

did you get the basil and neroli one giraffe? i got that its lovely

Arealhumanbeing · 22/10/2017 16:38

Giraffesarequitetall

If your JM one goes unused it will lose its scent eventually.

The Aldi candles should be there now. They sell out quite quickly but if you find out what day the lorry comes you’ll be lucky.

They’re massive, black and white label with either No 1 No 2 or No 3 on it, silver lid, the lot.

£3.99 too so a lovely cheap buy on a rainy afternoon.

Giraffesarequitetall · 22/10/2017 22:31

Thanks arealhumanbeing I guess i’d better just use it then! But it’s in such a pretty box 😀.

Will pop down to Aldi too!

I bought a beauty advent calendar last year and whilst I enjoyed it, I have to say it's not the best use of my money. This year, I've collected a bag of samples/minis of beauty products throughout the year, and will pick one out at random every day in advent. Much cheaper. Each to their own though so do what you want OP. Not sure why you're asking if it's ok on MN though.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 23/10/2017 07:31

Because it's a forum where people spend all day asking questions? Hmm

Anyway...Professoracat can I hijack and ask a question? Wink is there a candle making supplier you would recommend?

PoppyPopcorn · 23/10/2017 07:39

the fact that anyone thinks that this is reasonable is symptomatic of the completely out of control consumerist hegemony that we live in.

Gosh, could you get ANY more preachy and patronising?

A coveted and adored advent calendar is not consumerism out of control. What is consumerism out of control is not the value of what you have but the quantity of that - the mountains of plastic tat which are shipped around the planet so that parents can outdo each other with mountains of presents and #makingmemories, or disposable fashion designed to be worn once or twice and then discarded.

Buying something you really, really want and almost bought last year and didn't is totally different. The cost is not the important factor.

OP - buy it and love it.

Cutesbabasmummy · 23/10/2017 07:41

If you can afford it go for it!

ProfessorCat · 23/10/2017 12:18

@Perfumeisamessage

I get my wax from all different suppliers, depending on who has an offer on 😉 I only use eco soy wax though. It's the best quality and is environmentally friendly. It doesn't give off nasties like paraffin either.

Scentymental is very good for fragrances! Quick delivery and a great variety! My problem is wanting to try them all Grin

PerfumeIsAMessage · 23/10/2017 12:54

Thank you! Flowers Am thinking teenage dd Christmas!

ProfessorCat · 23/10/2017 13:03

The bits to make candles?

If she likes candles, wax melts are way more fun to make. You don't need to worry about wicks and containers and there are some fantastic moulds out there!

If you do make melts, make sure to get pillar blend wax and not container wax as they need to hold their shape. It's addictive though - you can add dyes, glitter, layers.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/10/2017 13:30

Ignore me if this has already been mentioned, but it seems B&M are doing a Yankee Candle one for just £16.99 Smile

Prof- thank you! Yes, we have a house full of melts, maybe I'll go down that route! Off to ebay to look for moulds and ingredients!
