Aibu to buy Jo Malone advent calendar?

I put my name on a waiting list for one back in February, I didn't think I'd get one as they are very sought after.
The shop rang me today to say I'd got one!
It's £300 which I have got but now I'm thinking it's hugely extravagant and a bit self indulgent.
I could do much more useful things with that money like put it towards Christmas presents etc.
But I would love it and don't often treat myself,
Aibu to have it, just this once?

If they’re on eBay at £500 doesn’t that mean they’re sold out everywhere else? Why would anyone spend £500 on eBay when they could spend £300 on the store experience and packaging etc.

OP it sounds like getting one would have made you so uncomfortable it would have ruined the experience anyway.

Check out the Christmas range and maybe get yourself one full sized item that you love. The packaging is stunning this year.

Then maybe Lego advent calendars or something equally as special for the children? You would have enough left for a large JM candle if you fancied it.

Whatever you buy enjoy it.

It's such a good idea to check out the contents of calendars even if it ruins the surprise a bit! I remember one year the L'Occitane had some tat in like cookie cutters and gift tags and people were rightly annoyed as for a luxury calendar that isn't cheap you do expect 24 nice items.

I got the NYX one this year as I am a total lip product fiend and all the other calendars had things in i don't think I'd use, or already owned. I love the idea of 24 mini lip products (I have too many to ever get through a full sized one). It's sat looking at me temptingly!

To be fair @theresamayscough a LOT of things could be classed as a 'waste of money.' I bet you 'waste money' on stuff too. Do you have SKY TV, do you smoke, do you have a mobile phone and a phone contract, do you have the internet, do you buy books or CD's or video games, do you go to the pub, do you have holidays abroad, do you buy name brand clothing, do you have your hair or nails done professionally, do you buy paintings or ornaments or any kind of collectibles, or any name brand furniture?

I bet you 'waste' money on something, and if you say you don't, I won't believe you.

Telstar99 · 21/10/2017 10:18

Let's face it, would any MAN think twice about spending £300 on an extravagant item, or on his 'hobby?' or on a weekend with the lads, or on his favourite sport etc etc etc..

Would he fuck? Why do women always feel bad for spending money on something they almost certainly deserve?!

Go for it @tropical1, just get it.

Error yes my DH would.

Telstar99 · 21/10/2017 10:23

Most men wouldn't think twice about spending £300 on themselves.

Telstar99 · 21/10/2017 10:23

I knew someone would jump in and say MY man wouldn't though Wink

I just wondered how long it would take!

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/10/2017 10:25

YANBU, if you can afford it and it's worth it to you.

Beauty products and candles aren't my thing but I've just spent £60 on the Costco gin advent calendar and I'm more excited than I should be about opening it.

I've even found myself stroking it when I see it on the utility room worktop.

And because all the others I've seen are over £100 and contain smaller bottles of gin, it feels like a bit of a bargain.

Mulch · 21/10/2017 10:26

300 quid on mini candles? That's crazy money, I'm going on holiday on that amount. But if you have it and it makes you happy why not. I think it's poor taste to judge what people spend their money on, Op might already give to charities.

ProfessorCat · 21/10/2017 10:33

£300 on an advent calender? Home bargains do the same thing for £3.99. Their Christmas candles are some of the best I've had and I make candles as a hobby.

I've had Jo Malone stuff and it's SO overrated. The candles you can buy from home sellers are stronger, the Primark dupe perfumes are just as good and you're just paying for a name, which IMO is a bit sad.

teaandcakeat8 · 21/10/2017 10:33

Get the calendar and sell it on eBay for profit!

Then splurge on your favourite perfume and candles with some of the money? Maybe some body cream too...

Oysterbabe · 21/10/2017 10:33

I would if I was in to that sort of thing Smile

Good point.

Woman drops 3.5k on a Chanel 2.55 when you can get a nice bag for £35, everyone loses it.

Man drops 50k on a car when you get a nice one for 18k, everyone carries on living their lives.

OP have you decided what your treat will be? Are you going to post a picture? I get nosy and excited about other people’s treat purchases.

Arealhumanbeing · 21/10/2017 10:39

ProfessorCat

Have you tried the Aldi Jo Malone dupes? I’m really pleased with mine.

They’ve even got the same names. When I go to restock I can’t believe they’re still on the shelves. Surely they’ll get a strongly worded letter soon? Grin

ProfessorCat · 21/10/2017 10:55

@Arealhumanbeing

I have and I was pleasantly surprised! They aren't quite as strong but they smell beautiful!

I was wondering that about the Primark perfume, they're very close in name. I'm guessing they'd have checked it out before producing them though. I get so many comments when I wear them and they last all day. In fact, I sprayed one on my scarf two weeks ago and I can still smell it.

Uokbing · 21/10/2017 11:46

Ok I am very much all about handbags rather than cars, but I do think that you get what you pay for with cars much more so than with handbags where you really are mostly paying for the name.

A more expensive car will have a bigger, better engine, a better interior and better various specifications. With handbags, once you get past about £300 you are pretty much just paying for the label. In fact Chanel are so keen to protect their branding that apparently they will burn any left over stock at the end of a season so that it doesn't end up in any sort of sale. Crazy stuff eh?

Obviously whether you need a car with a bigger, better engine, nicer interior etc is up for debate, but I don't think they are the same.

Luncharmstrong · 21/10/2017 11:58

Who has managed to persuade swathes of the population - mostly women, that a tiny package of pleasant smelling bath lotion is a TREAT ?

How did this happen ?

Sallystyle · 21/10/2017 12:01

I would so get it OP.

Why feel guilty about treating yourself for something you have saved up for and wanted over a year? It'a only a waste of money if you're not going to enjoy it. And then you can sell what you don't want on Ebay.

If I had £300 spare I would get it in a heart beat.

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/10/2017 12:29

I know lunch. It's like when posters describe what they'd do to treat themselves and come up with things like having a bath, painting nails, hair cuts.

Things like that fall into the same category as doing the washing up or going to the dentist in my world, ie dull necessities.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 21/10/2017 12:36

It’s undoubtedly very beautiful and luxurious and if you can afford it,go for it

ooohbetty · 21/10/2017 12:38

I think that if you need to ask if you should get one then you probably already know that it's a bit to much money to spend on yourself, if you were in a position were you had a bit more disposable income the question wouldn't need to be asked, you would just get it.
These things are lovely but you really need to be earning enough where you don't need to be questioning your decision. Why not look for a cheaper version that you know you can afford with out feeling guilty and needing to seek approval?
I don't mean to offend but we all have our financial limits and somethings are just to frivolous.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 21/10/2017 12:40

Has anyone rocked up and suggested op have a haircut/bath and slated her profligate spending. Surprised no one said £300 could buy 1000 chicken fillets to make soup, risotto, burritos, chicken pie..

Brittbugs80 · 21/10/2017 12:46

I'm off to Costco tomorrow to get some Christmas presents. I've got the beer one for my DH so I'm going to look out for the gin one myself!

Yeah I see your point. I just think generally men don’t get half the shit that women do for spending their own money on nice things. Also I think items that are “for women” lose status for that exact reason.

Also I think I just wanted to talk about the 2.55.Grin

Size medium, black, calf skin, silver hardware. From the store on Rue Cambon. 😊😍🤤
