Aibu to buy Jo Malone advent calendar?

I put my name on a waiting list for one back in February, I didn't think I'd get one as they are very sought after.
The shop rang me today to say I'd got one!
It's £300 which I have got but now I'm thinking it's hugely extravagant and a bit self indulgent.
I could do much more useful things with that money like put it towards Christmas presents etc.
But I would love it and don't often treat myself,
Aibu to have it, just this once?

I saw what was in last years and if you can afford it then go for it. It’s not just candles there are perfumes and other things as well.

WitchesHatRim · 20/10/2017 20:30

I love Jo Malone but I think at £300 the calender is a waste.

WitchesHatRim · 20/10/2017 20:32

People are being very rude to you OP. It’s none of their business.

Errrr @luckylavender I think you'll find the OP made it others business when she posted on an internet forum.

No one has been rude either.

SeaWitchly · 20/10/2017 20:35

I agree with all those who say it's a ridiculous sum of money to pay for some candles and the money could definitely be better spent elsewhere [rather than further lining the pockets of Estee Lauder shareholders].

But hey, ho, to each their own I guess.

KrytensNanobots · 20/10/2017 20:35

Three hundred quid on an advert calendar? K'in 'ell.
Bring back the nativity pictures behind doors. They're the ones I like.

None of their business? When you ask people "am I being unreasonable" you're asking for opinions, surely?
Otherwise what's the point in bleedin' asking in the first place?!
Nethuns is t'other way if you want to be unanimously told, no, "your money, your choice hun"

jay55 · 20/10/2017 20:39

Rather spend £300 on the fragrances I actually like.

Pumperthepumper · 20/10/2017 20:45

I love Jo Malone too but £300 for an advent calendar would absolutely choke me. I'm so miserable though, there'd be at least three I didn't like and I'd be raging.

Uokbing · 20/10/2017 20:46

This whole adult advent calendar thing has only been around for a couple of years and is a marketers ultimate wet dream. I love all things beauty, make up, clothes and am probably more on the more materialistic side, but I agree with the pp who said it's just consumerism at its worst. It's just pointless. Every brand has jumped on the bandwagon and everyone seems to just suck it up. £300?!

Having said that, if you want one and have the money then go for it I guess.

tropical1 · 20/10/2017 20:46

Sorry, my internet packed up temporarily😞
I'm grateful for all the replies, they are more or less what's been going round in my head.
I know it's very expensive and could be spent on much more useful things.
I'm not in the habit of spending loads of cash on myself , I do give to charity every month through payroll and always buy for the food bank at Christmas so I think I do a fair bit.
I think a previous poster s suggestion of buying my favourite perfume instead may be what I'll do.
Thanks for all responses 😊

Clever marketing to make them rare, I'm a total JM junkie and was considering asking DH for one for my birthday. Then I thought, nope I'll ask for a bottle of scent a candle and still have enough for dinner at my favourite restaurant.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 20/10/2017 22:14

Oh have one ! It will
Make you happy 😊 and if you saved hard why not

GreenPetal94 · 20/10/2017 22:18

If you can afford it then go for it. But seems a bit odd to post about it on here.

KrytensNanobots · 20/10/2017 22:20

But seems a bit odd to post about it on here.

Could say that about 99.9 % of the posts on MN to be fair Grin

LemonShark · 20/10/2017 22:24

Go for it if you can afford it comfortably enough to be able to really enjoy it!

I got a £50 beauty advent calendar this year, my first one. I've also spent around 150-180 hours volunteering this year on top of my full time job. Can people let me know if that morally balances out well enough for me to keep the calendar?

Hmm
MyCatMyRules · 20/10/2017 22:36

Unless you're going to run yourself into debt, do it.
My lovely colleagues bought me the No7 one a couple of years back when I was going through a bad time (brother dying) and I got such pleasure from it. Go for it Op, enjoy it and don't feel guilty about posting on here. Aibu is full of joy suckers and frowners upon nice things. Ignore Wink

TitaniasCloset · 20/10/2017 22:40

What's in all these posh calendars?

ssd · 20/10/2017 22:41

op bloody get it!!

and dont feel you have to explain yourself to anyone, if you can afford it then get it

and you've inspired me, I'm going to start a savings account and buy myself a gorgeous advent calendar next year, dh and the ds's would never even guess such things exist, so if I want it I need to get it myself

tropical1 · 20/10/2017 22:52

I really want it, really wanted one last year...
I think I'll sleep on it and decide tomorrow!
It has lots of perfumes, some candles, body lotions and bath oil ( at least last years did!)
I know it's hyped up and overpriced but I still want one!
Thank you for all responses for and against, I'll let you know when I've decided Smile

If you really want it, get it. For me I find the scents overpowering.,I do use the hand soap and hand lotion in the downstairs loo.,but can’t burn the candles,as they give me a headache, so they sit like ornaments. The whole downstairs loo currently smells of English pear and freesia amd it’s just a new bottle,of hand soap, it’s that strong.

So for me, it would be a no, I would only buy specific items that suited me,,and 300 would buy enough, but as said, if you like it go for it.

CharlieCoCo · 20/10/2017 23:03

if you really want it and have for a while and can afford it, then get it. why let strangers on the internet tell you not to.

Runningissimple · 20/10/2017 23:07

There are people spending £300 on advent calanders, there are people eating out of food banks. Funny old world.

ssd · 20/10/2017 23:27

if you want to be a martyr and please people on AIBU dont get it, put the money to a nice bottle of perfume and something sensible and polish your halo

if you have saved the money and can spend it on this, get it and enjoy it

the choice is yours and yours alone

CharlieCoCo · 20/10/2017 23:29

it is a funny old world and it isn't fair, however are you suggesting everyone lives poor because some people are? I'm glad my bosses have more money than I do, it means they can afford to hire me, but it also means they spend more money on shoes than I spend on food. they also spent more than a month of my wages on a painting for charity once and sponsor a poor child.. they can spend however much they want on shoes.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 20/10/2017 23:38

Get it tomorrow if you can, and bung it on Ebay - one has just sold for £500.
