Aibu to buy Jo Malone advent calendar?

I put my name on a waiting list for one back in February, I didn't think I'd get one as they are very sought after.
The shop rang me today to say I'd got one!
It's £300 which I have got but now I'm thinking it's hugely extravagant and a bit self indulgent.
I could do much more useful things with that money like put it towards Christmas presents etc.
But I would love it and don't often treat myself,
Aibu to have it, just this once?

Go for it - it looks nice. You could always keep the box and fill it for the DC next year...

Personally, I think you would have had to have a lobotomy to spend 500 quid on that (even 300). There are loads of lovely scents there but many for me would be in the 'wrong' form- ie I would prefer nectarine cologne rather than bodywash. For that reason, I would no buy it for myself but would definitely not mind if anyone wanted to buy one for me as a gift!

I think the extravagance point is by the by. As others have said, many people spend £300 a year on takeaway coffees. If you are concerned, maybe have a deal with yourself that you will try to save £300 from your normal expenses next year.

catsarenice · 21/10/2017 07:21

How about spending £200 on Jo Malone stuff of your choice and £100 on a family day out/meal? You can then treat yourself to the stuff you'd actually use and won't feel guilty because your family have been treated too.

ZaraW · 21/10/2017 07:28

Catsarenice why should the OP feel guilty if she wants it and can afford it she should buy it.

Nanasueathome · 21/10/2017 07:40

Last year my son bought me the Liberty advent calendar and I bought myself the Jo Malone one.
The intention was to share the Jo Malone one with my daughter and daughter in law...which I did
The Liberty one was £165 ish and is worth over £500 in value of products
I am sure the Jo Malone one was £250 last year..certainly a lot less than the cost of this years
I thought the Jo Malone one was fine but did think that product value was same as the actual cost of the calendar
The items were all mini sizes and whilst I love Jo Malone perfumes and candles I did not feel it was worth the money
I’m getting Liberty again this year but will not get the Jo Malone one
Have a think about it
I know they go for ridiculous prices on eBay and the woman in the Jo Malone shop told me that they had people coming into store and asking for them, although they had sold out, and one person offered them £1000 for one
They are sought after but expensive for what they are

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/10/2017 07:43

Get it.

It'll give you pleasure we'll into next year. Worth the money from that point of view.

Caulk · 21/10/2017 07:47

Get it and sell it on eBay. If it makes £500 then put the £300 by to get it next year and you could spend the £200 on whatever you wanted.

InspMorse · 21/10/2017 07:52

Each if the 24 items in the calendar cost £12.50.
Nice idea having lots of cute little samples to mess around with at the end of December but in my experience, 6 months later they are all cluttering up my drawers and haven't been used/ are too small to be used properly.
I would prefer to spend £300 on items I'd chosen & would definitely use.
However, if money is no object, go for it.

purplecorkheart · 21/10/2017 07:54

Honestly, I wouldn't. I was given one last year and the year before. Unless you like every scent they do you may not even like all the stuff. The stuff is handy for travel sized good but once you take away the scents you don't like yoy are not left which much.

tropical1 · 21/10/2017 08:20

It's good to hear what the actual contents are( thank you PP) and from those people who have had one previously.
On reflection I've decided not to get one, partly because as people have said I may not like everything in it, use the lotions etc and partly because it is so expensive and I think I'd just feel very guilty!
I'm a sucker for stuff like this but I think I'd probably end up regretting it.
Thanks for all your thoughtsSmile

Ah op, having just looked on eBay I'd say if you can't beat em join em. Buy one and whack it on eBay and spent the ridiculously high profit on some full sized stuff you love, guilt free.

BulletFox · 21/10/2017 08:54

Do the contents appear a bit tiddly to anyone else...? I can't see how it's worth £300.

But up to OP, like others have said you could always ebay

Theseaweed · 21/10/2017 09:02

I think you should get it. If it was a piece of kit for a hobby or clothing you wouldn't consider it wasteful. If you will derive pleasure from it and have been thinking about it since last year, just go for it.
Yes £300 is a significant amount of money but you're not remortgaging the house or using your food shopping money. It's fine to spend that much if you've got it.
Buy it, enjoy it!

Uokbing · 21/10/2017 09:02

The Liberty one was £165 ish and is worth over £500 in value of products

Really? £500 worth of product in 24 miniature products? And you think Liberty would sell 500 quids worth of product for £165 without having to make any other purchase to get it at that price?

You've been well and truly had.

Ktown · 21/10/2017 09:07

I spend a couple of hundred quid in the shop and ask for samples, which is what 90% of the contents is.
If you like samples then fine but it seems an expensive way of buying them.

catsarenice · 21/10/2017 09:15

@ZaraW I didn't say she should feel guilty but she was debating whether to get it as by her own admission she could've spent the money on more useful things therefore was doubting spending so much on herself. It was just a suggestion - op wanted opinions!!! Hmm

BulletFox · 21/10/2017 09:17

Uokbing I think the Liberty one is mainly full sized.

I often wonder about beauty boxes and how they make money from them, I guess they're mainly promotional?

Annabelle4 · 21/10/2017 09:25

If I had £300 to treat myself, I'd go away for a 5 star weekend.

Or... buy a cheaper Advent beauty calendar - there are threads on style&beauty with details and prices, so you'd still get a beautiful one for around £50-£150, and still have £150 left to spend on Christmas.

Telstar99 · 21/10/2017 09:37

Don't know whether the 24 item slisted are worth a fiver each or £25 each, but they do sound like lovely little items/gifts.

Yeah just get the advent calendar. (If you can comfortably afford to spend £300 of course!) You're a mom of 3 @Tropical1 - you deserve an extravagant treat! Grin

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 21/10/2017 09:47

If I could, I would.

chanie44 · 21/10/2017 09:58

I agree with inspmorse whilst I love the idea of getting an advent calendar, in the longer term, I’d probably prefer getting 1-2 things I’d chosen myself rather than 24 smaller items.

Theresamayscough · 21/10/2017 10:02

Jesus Christ what a fucking waste of money. Jo malone must be laughing all the way to the bank

Parker231 · 21/10/2017 10:07

It’s not a waste of money if that is what you enjoy. I use the Jo Malone shower gels every day, they are gorgeous and to me, worth every penny!

Oly5 · 21/10/2017 10:08

I really wanted one too but then I looked at what was in it and realised I don’t like some of the scents.
So I’m spending £150 on the stuff I do love instead
