Aibu to buy Jo Malone advent calendar?

I put my name on a waiting list for one back in February, I didn't think I'd get one as they are very sought after.
The shop rang me today to say I'd got one!
It's £300 which I have got but now I'm thinking it's hugely extravagant and a bit self indulgent.
I could do much more useful things with that money like put it towards Christmas presents etc.
But I would love it and don't often treat myself,
Aibu to have it, just this once?

OP, if you have budgeted and saved the money to buy yourself something special then buy something special. If you are hesitating that the advent calendars are worth it then maybe buy something else you would enjoy.

Advent calendars are not my thing and I had to google Chanel 2.55 to realise it was a bag :-) However I save to spend money on technical stuff which others would regard as silly or excessive.

I do think women are pressured more into putting their 'squander' money toward family in a way that men are not.

Nanasueathome · 21/10/2017 18:28

Coming back to a comment earlier, the Liberty one has 15 full size products

Doggington · 21/10/2017 18:32

Sell it on eBay. Use the £250 you will make to treat yourself to a spa day with a mate. Experiences with friends are much better than any advent calender plus the day will essentially be free!

Pooshweens · 21/10/2017 18:33

I like to indulge but that seems crazy even to me and I like spending!

Pooshweens · 21/10/2017 18:34

Whatever floats your boat tho, id spend that on a coat for example so everyone values things differeny

Papafran · 21/10/2017 20:21

Have you tried the Aldi Jo Malone dupes? I’m really pleased with mine

They’ve even got the same names. When I go to restock I can’t believe they’re still on the shelves. Surely they’ll get a strongly worded letter soon?

I think it was in the news that one exploded and sent shattered glass flying... So maybe they won't be on the shelves for much longer....

Arealhumanbeing · 21/10/2017 22:19

Papafran

I saw that too but it was on Facebook, not the news. Mine have burnt down almost completely and didn’t explode. I wonder if it’s a JM attempt at sabotage?! 😂

Anyway I bloody hope it’s not true! I’ve taken them to people’s houses instead of flowers a few times.

ProfessorCat · 22/10/2017 08:18

One exploded because the person let the wick burn to one side and the glass popped. I've done the same myself with a Yankee. Nothing to do with the brand, it's to do with correct usage.

WellTidy · 22/10/2017 08:33

I feel you can afford it, get it. You seem to really want it. So have it. If I wanted it, I would buy it too. I personally would prefer to spend £300 in jo malone on things that I had selected, and get to £300 with maybe 3 or 4of the £44 candles, a room spray, 3 shower gels, some soaps and a hand cream. I am quite particular about perfume, so it wouldn't be a good buy for me. But I know loads of people who would love it.

KingPrawnOkay · 22/10/2017 08:36

I like to indulge myself but in my mind that’s be a £50-£100 advent calendar, not £300! If you can afford it though, nothing wrong with spending that amount. I would never buy Jo Malone though as they test on animals, so of course I’ll say YABU Blush

Papafran · 22/10/2017 08:41

Phew, that's good to know, Professor. Was thinking of maybe getting one if I could find one....

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 22/10/2017 08:42

Yankee and Aldi candles aren't in the same league as many more expensive ones. It's like saying a free range, organic chicken is the same as one bought for 3.99 from Tesco. No, they really are not.

Anyway OP, whilst I always have some JM candles, body cream and fragrance, I would never buy the advent calendar as I know I wouldn't like the smell of them all. Also I'd much rather have a few full sized products I love, than 24 small sized things that I think are okish.

Please go and treat yourself though OP. Go to a Jo Malone counter, the assistants are usually lovely and helpful, have a good old sniff, and buy yourself some things you will love.

Papafran · 22/10/2017 08:43

KingPrawn really? They say on their website that they don't, except where required by law.

LucheroTena · 22/10/2017 08:48

YY about men spending money on stuff without anyone judging.

Op if you want it get it. I had a look at them all and think the Liberty, Rituals or Molten Brown ones look good and are cheaper if that's an issue. I would be ecstatic if someone bought me one.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 22/10/2017 08:54

If you want it and it will make you feel good, then do it.
I collect perfume and sometimes feel guilty then I think about dh going to the footy every weekend. I do think there's something in the comments that sometimes women feel they shouldn't treat themselves.
Personally I think JM as a brand is the most shocking example of excellent marketing (especially on middle class social media) with an Emperor's New Clothes product but hey, the packaging is cool. Wink

ChocolatePHD · 22/10/2017 09:03

ifyougodowntothewoods actually that's not true about expensive candles being better. Yankee for example use far more pure fragrance than Jo Malone do. Jo Malone only use 3%.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 22/10/2017 09:10

It isn't just the pure fragrance which is important. It's the quality of the other ingredients.

ProfessorCat · 22/10/2017 09:16

As a candle maker, the quality of the products I use are far better than Jo Malone and they cost 90% less.

You're paying for the name and that's it.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 22/10/2017 09:20

I don't agree Cat. Cheaper candles make my nose and throat itch. They smell unpleasant to me. Jo Malone, diptyque and Neom candles, I can burn all day long. There's a huge difference imo.

Oysterbabe · 22/10/2017 09:22

I agree that it's easier for men to splurge on stuff. My DH spends £800 every year on his football season ticket. He will also spend a lot on travel as it's 2 hours each way and means he spends every other Saturday doing something fun, leaving me with the kids. If I wanted a £300 advent calendar I'd buy it and he'd know better than to say a word, although I'm sure most would view it as a waste of money and his football as being fine.

happiestcamper · 22/10/2017 09:25

Ahh I would totally get one if I could afford it.

There are always going to be people less well off that you, you do give to charity and food banks you also work bloody hard for your money. Why shouldn't you have nice things just because other people are struggling. Bring some joy in to your own life for a change. As a fellow hard working parent we don't do it enough.

hippyhippyshake · 22/10/2017 09:40

Never heard of adult advent calendars but used to make ones for the Dds. I'm now thinking a limoncello/baileys/homemade tea light concoction for myself. Off to google these expensive ones for ideas!

Arealhumanbeing · 22/10/2017 10:59

Yankee and Aldi candles aren't in the same league as many more expensive ones. It's like saying a free range, organic chicken is the same as one bought for 3.99 from Tesco. No, they really are not.

We know they’re not in the same league. Yankee I wouldn’t have in the house but the Aldi JM dupes don’t cause the throat itching/headache/nausea. They’re just very pleasant and subtle. And they do fine for a couple of hours in the evening with cooking smells etc.

I actually find that the Aldi ones have a better ‘throw’ than the JM’s (that changed quite dramatically after she sold the company).

PerfumeIsAMessage · 22/10/2017 11:33

JM won't be complaining about Aldi anytime soon because you can't patent the words "pomegranate" or "pear"
I was surprised to see how little of the actual ingredients JM use for any of their products, but I guess that's why the perfumes have the sillage of dew on a gnat's toenail. I did have a candle once but for mid-price mid-quality ingredients I prefer White Company or L'Occitane.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 22/10/2017 11:37

PS Apparently Jo Loves is much nicer stuff than the now EL owned JM. Haven't tried it though.
