Flatmate said my Halloween decorations are offensive

They're a string of Halloween paper chains hanging on the outside of my bedroom door. She said they're offensive and she doesn't like them.

I really love Halloween and they make me smile when I come in. I have more hanging in my room too.

Who is being unreasonable?

I think I’d put a note under her door saying she you’d like to discuss things like adults & see what happens. Tell her to stop slamming doors & best cover the Christmas tree too 🙄

QuestionableMouse · 21/10/2017 18:43

@CasanovaFrankenstein,

Yep, when she first came to look around.

I hate this “it offends me” BS

It’s a decorations for something you want to celebrate!

Christmas offends people
Halloween offends people
Christianity offends people
Jews offend people
Muslims offend people
The list never ends!
Everyone’s entitled to celebrate what they believe in. Within reason! What you believe in is up to you and if you wana put decorations up then do it.

If someone told me to take my decs down coz it offends them I wouldn’t be so polite with my comeback to that.

It’s a bloody Halloween decoration for crying out loud, a bit of fun!
If she’s religious and you told her something to do with religion was offending you it would be a massive insult. How comes one belief seems to be allowed to bitch and moan and be offended about other beliefs but the other way round would an outcry of discrimination or some other dramatic accusations.

Looks like we will never go back to a day when being offended because of a direct insult, you know, like name calling.

If religion related or not she’s jbeing a twat is she gonna go to the shops and tell them to stop selling Halloween stuff. I think not.

QuestionableMouse · 22/10/2017 16:47

Well I spoke to her very briefly. It's because she doesn't believe in celebrating Halloween because it offends God. There was a dead silence when I pointed out that I don't believe in God and considered myself Pagan. Her bus arrived at this point so the conversation was cut short. I'm fairly sure she now thinks she's living with either a witch or a heathen.

I really need to speak to her properly.

Oh please. I can't believe anyone would get worked up about a string of paper decorations on a door. Your flatmate needs to find some more important things to worry about. If there is a God, S/he wouldn't be worrying about some paper pumpkins and skeletons on a door either! S/he would be far more concerned with all of the wars, famines and other injustices in the world.

missadasmith · 22/10/2017 17:03

It's because she doesn't believe in celebrating Halloween because it offends God.

I hope you keep the chain up. it is her believe. How can she expect her flatmates to live according to her belief system? How does she get through the day? I really would not accommodate this intolerant and ignorant nonsense.

scootinFun · 22/10/2017 17:13

Keep the chain up

QuestionableMouse · 22/10/2017 17:15

I was going to take it down but it's staying up now.

Fekko · 22/10/2017 17:17

I don't think a string of paper could possible offend any deity. Surely he/she/it would be far more offended by all the war, famine, genocide going on at the moment? Tell her that you're sure god has bigger fish to fry.

0nesie · 22/10/2017 18:02

Why would you take it down? It's on your door. She doesn't have to put anything up on her door but it isn't really her business what you put on your door. Why does her dislike of the decoration trump your liking of it? Also, if you take it down you will send out the wrong message that she has the power to make you change anything she dislikes.

DistanceCall · 22/10/2017 18:27

If God is offended by a paper chain, God is very easily offended.

I'm agnostic, but I've always thought that if there is a Supreme Being of any sort, He/She/It will be INTELLIGENT. Not this idiot God fanatics keep telling us about.

Fekko · 22/10/2017 18:29

When she starts just ask her to consider 'what if you're wrong?'. That should keep her quiet for a while.

vlooby · 22/10/2017 18:40

@DistanceCall I've never thought of it that way but immediately agree!

Lweji · 22/10/2017 18:51

Tell her to be careful not to become like the pharisees.

RedBullBlood · 22/10/2017 19:24

It's in the Daily Mail, complete with op's photo of decorations. Will she see it?

Lweji · 22/10/2017 19:26

I'm pretty sure that God is also offended by the Daily Mail.

Fekko · 22/10/2017 19:31

Is it really? They really are lazy arse 'journalists' over there, eh? (Print that, I dare you!)

EvilDemonRaspberryOverlord · 22/10/2017 19:34

It's because she doesn't believe in celebrating Halloween because it offends God.

And how is she so certain of that? I find it interesting that people I know use God to back up their prejudices, and that these prejudices often conflict with each other.

QuestionableMouse · 22/10/2017 19:39

Dear Daily Mail, please fuck right off then fuck right off some more you pack of lazy cunts. Of all the news in the world, you pick my (non) story to print?

Fucking lazy writing, that is.

I'm finding the typos in that article highly offensive. Hana Carter, you need to go back to school and learn how to spell properly.

OP posts:
headintheproverbial · 22/10/2017 20:02

You should perform some sort of animal sacrifice in the middle of a large pentagram you carve into the living room floor. Give her something to be REALLY offended about.

YANBU. She's being a precious little poppet.

QuestionableMouse · 22/10/2017 20:10

Well, I have my period. If I sneeze hard enough I can probably fake something with the resulting mess!

OP posts:
brilliantslight · 22/10/2017 20:21

I like your chain op. Smile Please keep it up.

CasanovaFrankenstein · 22/10/2017 21:41

Well, I guess now we know the reason. I think her reaction is a bit odd. As evidenced all over this thread plenty of religious people either celebrate it or are unbothered by it.

Do you think she is due a visit from family who will have similar opinion and is worried about it?
