Silly question, but how come Harvey is only just getting clobbered now after dozens of actors and stars said he was a pervy letch 10, 15, 20 years ago?

I'm confused. How is he only being called into question now?

Whisky2014 · 15/10/2017 09:09

The scale of what this man has done is not comparable to 'the office sleaze'. The office sleaze is just creepy but doesn't DO anything. You can imagine what he would do given the chance but people are so repulsed he'd never get the chance. HW had power. I am annoyed all these "oh i told x,y,z person but they just ignored me/didn't listen". Ok, so tell the police Ffs. Why did NONE of them go to the police?

I saw a clip of the mylene klass interview, she whispered in the interviewers ear Harry's name and they moth smirked as of it was some fun gossip. Wtf

Whisky2014 · 15/10/2017 09:10

On a side note, I wonder how many female offuce sleazes there are in comparison to the male ones...

Bluntness100 · 15/10/2017 09:12

Yes, I agree they knew and the big names who said they didn’t i actually suspect it’s because they slept with him.

bingbongnoise · 15/10/2017 09:12

I also think this is the tip of the iceberg, and many other men in Hollywood have letched and perved over women AND tried it on, for many, many years. As has been said, we have all heard of the 'casting couch.'

Also many other industries have pervy men who letch over women, and will keep them down if they reject them.

@poppl Good post!

Once again, sorry to ask, how come Harvey Weinstein is only being clobbered now?

borntobequiet · 15/10/2017 09:13

Yes, Rich Hall said that even at his level of the entertainment industry he knew, and his level is that of "plate spinners"...
When the Saville stuff came out I was very surprised that people claimed ignorance as I was aware that he was a predatory sex offender, I think through reading Private Eye.

bingbongnoise · 15/10/2017 09:15

'The office sleaze doesn't DO anything'

@Whiskey2014

Lucky you if that is the case for you dear! Many women would definitely disagree with you on THAT one.

And female letches are almost non existent compared to male ones, and this is not what the subject is about IS it?

Gladys123 · 15/10/2017 09:16

This speech by joe Biden is good. Really rips into the people who didn't speak up.

Scorn not his simplicity .......I read it as 'scorn not his stupidity'
Oops 😊

StorminaBcup · 15/10/2017 09:20

I think the worst thing about this is that Hollywood / Oscars board / BAFTA board etc., are all bleating that this is a new beginning for the industry and that the rot has been ousted but actually, it must go far deeper than that. I don’t condone what HW has done but I do think he’s shouldering the whole of the entertainment industry’s history of abuse. It certainly won’t have just been him, other people must have colluded with him or else it would have been easy to report him.

Herbcake · 15/10/2017 09:23

I'm sure everyone heard rumours and he was known as a sleaze or whatever but unless you directly witness it or are a victim yourself, what can you actually do with that information?

ILoveMillhousesDad · 15/10/2017 09:25

Best,
MJD

Oh fucking hell. You're back.

I worked in one office and was the one who stood up to the office creep (he liked to stand very close to your chair when asking to do something and when you turned your head to respond to a question his penis was in your eyeliner and he's stand in such a way that his groin was thrust forward). He was handsy, little pants on the back which were just to low, shoulder strokes, standing too close when you were getting something out of a cupboard so you'd step back into him. He particularly liked to intimidate and harrass the youngest women in the department.

He didn't like me because I was the only one who stood up to him (one hungover day told him if I found his penis beside my ear again I'd staple it to his desk). My directors response was I shouldn't be rude to his managers and was I upset because the perv had started paying more attention to a younger 'girl' in the office. My response was a complaint to the HR director who did have a quiet word but only because I was engaged to a manager in a different department.

I was passed over for promotion because I spoke out (obviously they made sure I couldn't prove it but it was clear that was why) and left not to long after, though not before I found the 2 women on my team new jobs.

The guy is still there and carrying on the same behaviour.

glenthebattleostrich · 15/10/2017 09:43

Sorry, first time I've fully written that down so my point may be lost.

In every industry you know who the pervert is. And if they are even slightly higher on the ladder than you your career is screwed if you do anything about it.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 15/10/2017 09:49

I do not think you are being unreasonable, i think loads of people knew but either didnt want to say/do anything about it or were unable to say/do anything

User843022 · 15/10/2017 09:56

'I'm sure this is just the tip of a very large iceberg ( like operation Yewtree was in UK)'

Yes I'm sure there's loads of bosses in Hollywood in a sweat waiting for their expose.

I hope HW gets everything coming to him. I am not victim blaming and I can understand why lone vulnerable women didn't feel able to complain at the time but I have no respect for Paltrow and Streep who not only knew but fawned and praised him at every opportunity. A load of hypocrites.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 15/10/2017 09:57

Silly question, but how come Harvey is only just getting clobbered now after dozens of actors and stars said he was a pervy letch 10, 15, 20 years ago?

You are either very young or very naive.

Who would you report to? Your boss? He’d tell you to get over it?
The police? They’d tell you that it wasn’t anything to complain about. It wasn’t that long ago that rape wasn’t taken seriously.
People forgot how common place this was all over for women 20 years ago. How powerful men would think nothing of slapping you on the arse and nothing would get done about it.
It wasn’t that long ago that work places had to train people about what constituted sexual harassment.

brilliantslight · 15/10/2017 10:24

I agree Bluntness. I also think that those that deny knowledge may have slept with him too.

Sugarcoma · 15/10/2017 10:38

As to why it's all finally coming out now, the answer is because both the New York Times and the New Yorker were finally able to publish pieces that nailed him, by getting documents and getting women to speak on the record.

You can read an interview with one of the NYT reporters who broke the story here: www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/interrogation/2017/10/jodi_kantor_on_how_she_broke_the_harvey_weinstein_story.html

Previously Weinstein would threaten to pull advertising, sue or break careers when anyone tried to print the story. Due to a societal change and other high-profile stories (e.g. Cosby and even Saville) there was finally a feeling of let's nail this guy. That's why many women now feel able to speak out.

However I fully agree that some women, probably the ones who are staying quiet, entered into consensual relationships with him in the hopes their careers would be boosted.

badbadhusky · 15/10/2017 10:41

When the Saville stuff came out I was very surprised that people claimed ignorance as I was aware that he was a predatory sex offender, I think through reading Private Eye.

The moderators on the Guardian Talkboards were regularly deleting threads about Savile's predilections in the early 2000s. It's how I learned about it. They usually went along the lines of:

"Is Jimmy Savile:

a) a paedophile
b) a rapist
c) a corpse fucker (those were the St James mortuary rumours), or
d) all of the above?"

And then expanded on at length before the mods got to them.

Onecall · 15/10/2017 10:43

I wonder what his hit rate was.

Even those who slept with him though, how willing were they and how much pressure were they under?

I also wonder how he got together with his wife.

I think it's worth signing this, asking for some wider accountability:
