To say that vegans can't really like food?

I mean they don't eat most food so most cooking shows and recipe books are pointless for them. Going out for meals a chore. Birthdays, celebrations, dates... so much of is centred around food which they have to deny themselves and pick around.

I have nothing against vegans and everyone has the absolute right to eat what they want. But trying to cater for a vegan along with other guests is bloody hard work.

Reckon I'll get roasted for this.

OP it's really not hard to cater for vegans.

I had vegan family from abroad to stay for 6 weeks over christmas.
OH and DD like to eat meat at most meals, we all eat veg and pulses. DS are not huge meat eaters so are open to most things.
It was a fantastic culinary adventure.

I didn't do meat substitutes but planned every meal around a vegan base, adding options for meat eaters.

Everything served on platters at the table, so help yourself.
So one night would be

Indian
Onion Bajjis
Aubergine curry
Lentil and mushroom curry
Rice
Poppadoms, chapatis
Pickles
Chicken kebabs with yogurt sauce

Everyone was happy.

Morroccan
Chickpea and veg tagine
Jewelled couscous
Harrisa sauce
Roasted peppers with Ras el Hanout
Flatbreads
Lamb kebabs

Again everyone happy, everyone eating at the table together, no obvious options. Same format works with Asian, Chinese, Greek Mexican etc.

We had many feasts it was a lovely culinary adventure for the whole family.

PorklessPie · 13/10/2017 22:12

I'm vegan, as are my husband and children. We eat plenty, I can make almost any meal vegan, but as its for ethical reasons we believe an animals life is worth more than a meal. I've been vegan since I was 10.
We don't have any friends or family...so that solves any issues WinkGrin

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 13/10/2017 22:12

I am also fairly quiet about why I think it's the right way . I think if the vegan crowd changes their communication style much could be gained

PovertyPain · 13/10/2017 22:13

My goodness there are a lot of very angry meat eaters, on here. Calm down, it's not good for your blood pressure, and as you seem to know so little about food, I imagine your blood pressure doesn't need any more stress.

SentimentalLentil · 13/10/2017 22:13

Well of course you would ask the waiter if they had a vegan option in a restaurant if you were vegan. Most places have allergen menus, it's hardly annoying for you for the person you're with to quite reasonably request what's in the food.

PoppyPopcorn · 13/10/2017 22:17

Well of course you would ask the waiter if they had a vegan option in a restaurant if you were vegan.

Vegans have no problem letting everyone know they are vegan. Loudly and repeatedly.

SentimentalLentil · 13/10/2017 22:18

I went into a greasy spoon on the side of a motorway today (the A19) and it was the furthest place away from hipsterville ever and they had Linda maccartney sasauge sandwich on the menu, I had that with fried mushrooms and some hash browns and a huuuuge cup of earl grey.
I promise you more places do vegan options than you think, you're just not looking.

Slimthistime · 13/10/2017 22:19

Stop "I think if the vegan crowd changes their communication style much could be gained"
Never met these shouty vegans I hear about on MN.

As for a poster saying skinny and pale, one of my vegan friends could probably weight lift me!!

PovertyPain · 13/10/2017 22:20

Of course there must be plenty of people I pass in the street who are vegan and look perfectly healthy. I have just never known any personally

What? 😮 But didn't you know, we have to tell everyone we're veg and and make a big issue out of it? Are they not wearing hemp tee shirts with, I'M A VEGAN or MEAT IS MURDER? 🤔 Good job meat eaters never make an issue out of others people's food choices. It WAS a vegan that started this post, wasn't it? Oh, that's right, it was yet ANOTHER post about veganism started by a meat eater. Funny that.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 13/10/2017 22:22

Slim
I know a few and they do the cause no favours . It's a shame reallly

AssassinatedBeauty · 13/10/2017 22:22

Yes @PoppyPopcorn because all vegans are exactly the same...

bingbongnoise · 13/10/2017 22:22

What would I do if vegans came to my house for dinner???

I wouldn't invite them!

That answer your question?

So glad I made you laugh @SentimentalLentil I mean it has to be a dull life being a vegan.

FFS. If you can use Mumsnet then you are perfectly capable of googling a vegan recipe. Only lacto-ovo ourselves as we are cheese obsessives but being vegan is really not that hard these days. I find the idea that they don’t like food really insulting. Fungi, truffles, asparagus, avocado, nuts, seeds, pulses, grains, vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices, egg-free pasta, rice, etc., are delicious if prepared and cooked properly. I used to make a fantastic vegan chocolate cake which everyone loved.

Would I FUCK bother with all that bollocks, to feed a fussy eater like a vegan?!

Jog on!

And all that food you mention? I would rather eat cat food that has been baked in kitty litter ...

It would probably taste better than all that vegan shit actually.

bingbongnoise · 13/10/2017 22:24

Just leaving this here .........

To say that vegans can't really like food?
SentimentalLentil · 13/10/2017 22:24

Still not seeing the problem with asking for the food you want in a restaurant. I mean you could go around the houses and say, I would like this and this without this, but it's far easier to say 'can you make it vegan?' As 99.999% of restaurants will know what that means.
I used to not like saying it but then I would end up with egg on my face (or worse in my food) so now I just say it.

chachaboom · 13/10/2017 22:24

I had a vegan chocolate cake once, it was rank. I tried a veggie pulled pork burger today, great texture, zero taste. My opinion (as pp stated) is vegan/veggie substitutes should be avoided just stick to delicious exotic foods which happen to be vegan/veggie food. If you're dairy free, stop trying to emulate cheese, just write it off 😁.

speakout · 13/10/2017 22:25

We all eat vegan food more than we realise.

Today I had my favourite breakfast of a banana and peanut butter toastie. DD had marmite on a bagel.
Lunch was tomato and basil soup and beans on toast.
DS has just had an Indian takeaway- his favourite_channa on puri.

Woops - and we are omnivores.

Birdsgottafly · 13/10/2017 22:25

"our local vegan bakery
Oh yes, those are everywhere. hmm If you live in Hipsterville. "

If you aren't Vegan, or know any, you probably won't be aware of the amount of eating places that can easily cater for Vegans.

If it is a decent, Curry, Chinese, Indian, Italian restaurant then they can adapt something.

Traditionally no-one ate as much meat,or cooked with egg and animal milks, until farming took off. It was nice to see Gino pointing out that Pasta was traditionally made without milk. It is more difficult, so those that couldn't cook swapped.

I think the availability of meat meant that we cut out a lot from our diets. We would make tea/drinks out of all sorts of plants and 'weeds'. We would add the leaves from plants/treas which would give us the nutrition that we needed for the season we were in.

To make a statement like the OP's, you would have to be very limited in your food knowledge and closed minded.

tittythatwalk · 13/10/2017 22:26

I'm sick of invting carnists round for dinner. What can I cook them? If I don't cook the dead animals enough I might poison them... and those reformed, frozen dead animal convenience foods must be disgusting. What should I make with it? Just give them a plate of flesh? It's a nightmare having to cater to someone's different dietary needs. WinkGrin
Also, most vegans aren't doing it as a 'fad' -instead, they have genuine concerns for the destruction of the environment, the horrific treatment of animals, and the health of their families and themselves. Try watching a couple of those PETA videos of humane slaughter before you tuck into your roast and tell me your cool with it. (Unless you have psychopathic tendencies, then you do you.)

AssassinatedBeauty · 13/10/2017 22:26

Well that's clarified it. Just simple hatred of difference, fair enough that you're being open and direct about it.

It's actually really quite funny that you think a list of food including such simple things as pasta and rice is "vegan shit".

PinkPanther27 · 13/10/2017 22:26

PoppyPopcorn quote-
"Vegans have no problem letting everyone know they are vegan. Loudly and repeatedly." 🙄 Yawn. This joke is so old.

SentimentalLentil · 13/10/2017 22:27

You would rather eat cat food baked in a litter tray than a banana?
How strange

Northernparent68 · 13/10/2017 22:27

Poppy has it, it’s the way vegans bang on, that look at me I’m special attitude that annoys people.

We had vegan food for dinner tonight: roast cauliflower, garlic, peppers and courgettes, with couscous and a spicy tomato chickpea sauce. Didn't even notice it was vegan until I saw this thread. If you love veg and pulses, it's easy to enjoy vegan food. I love vegan food, just takes longer to prep.

speakout · 13/10/2017 22:28
