To say that vegans can't really like food?

I mean they don't eat most food so most cooking shows and recipe books are pointless for them. Going out for meals a chore. Birthdays, celebrations, dates... so much of is centred around food which they have to deny themselves and pick around.

I have nothing against vegans and everyone has the absolute right to eat what they want. But trying to cater for a vegan along with other guests is bloody hard work.

Reckon I'll get roasted for this.

I get you don't get as much food choice but I do admire them. I tried and barely made it a couple of days, it takes real dedication.

I expect most of them do it not because they hate food, but because they can't stand for animal cruelty.

DrRisotto · 13/10/2017 21:14

Fake cheese is practically sacrilegious. Ditto Quorn "meat".

So at Christmas I like to make fudge or cookies or something as gifts. What could I make for a vegan?

YABU. I'm not a vegan, but there are many vegan recipe books, vegan options in restaurants/ cafes, and an increasing number of wholly vegan restaurants. Vegan cakes can also be very good.

And of course vegans can eat pasta, though obviously not the kind made with egg.

Admittedly it's not a great diet for cheese lovers though.

thedevilinablackdress · 13/10/2017 21:15

Lol, I eat a mainly vegan diet and it's lovely

I'm a vegan and absolutely love and am obsessed with food. Since becoming vegan I go into a restaurant/lunch outlet and make a choice I would never of thought of as a meat eater and am amazed by how nice some of the choices are. As a meat eater I seemed to limit my choices more by always sticking to the same types of dishes. That's not to say I'm not sometimes sick of houmous!

Uh cookies?

AssassinatedBeauty · 13/10/2017 21:17

Don't make anything for the vegan, you don't really like them that much surely?

(Although cinder toffee covered in dark chocolate would be nice)

DrRisotto · 13/10/2017 21:17

Cookies without butter?

Bubblebubblepop · 13/10/2017 21:19

Tbf I have nothing against vegan diets but I certainly wouldn't consider vegans to be foodies either. The best restaurants aren't vegan / don't usually serve vegan meals

AssassinatedBeauty · 13/10/2017 21:20

Use margarine instead, several brands are vegan e.g. Stork

DrRisotto · 13/10/2017 21:20

Now now let's not go crazy. I said I'd got nothing against vegans but cooking for them is a nightmare. I'm capable of liking a person but not their food preferences.

I am vegan and am eating a much wider range of food than I ever did as a vegetarian. Before I was trying to lose weight I spent a lot of time at our local vegan bakery which sells everything from doughnuts to cheezy bean pies. Now I eat heaps of different fruits and veggie dishes from all over the world. Baking is super easy which various substitutions ("eggs" from flaxseed etc) I LOVE food (hence why I am fat) and being vegan just requires you to be willing to change your status quo. Plus even if it was super shit I find it extremely hard to stomach dairy products when I know how they are obtained so I would still do it

WomanEmpire · 13/10/2017 21:21

DrRisotto you are being purposefully obtuse, google 'vegan baking recipes' and see what comes up.

I haven't even done it, and I'm pretty bloody sure a lot of vegan recipes come up.

I'm not a vegan, a pescetarian and I would love to one day be a vegan, but I rely on dairy products heavily.
I'd hate to think people dreaded me coming round...if it's a roast, I just eat the veg, yorkshires and bring my own gravy!

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 13/10/2017 21:22

What difference does it make to you?
If you don’t like vegan food then don’t eat vegan food. Easy.

TheScottishPlay · 13/10/2017 21:23

My diet is far more varied now than when I was a meat eater.
Restaurants and cafes on the whole lag behind in their variety and choice available. I appreciate you highlighting that.

Ttbb · 13/10/2017 21:23

Vegan food can be really nice but takes a lot more effort unfortunately

Whatslovegottodo · 13/10/2017 21:24

I am a vegan and I adore food! In fact much more so now than when I was omni or vegetarian!
I love experimenting with new and delicious flavours, and just check out BOSH on Facebook for hundreds of delicious recipes.
Any dish can be veganised and you look and feel great if you stick mainly to whole food plant based (cooking from scratch), but you can eat burgers and chips if that's your thing.
I love chillis, currys, dhals, pies, pastries, Mexican, Chinese, pizza, brownies, salads, Buddha bowls, cakes, vegan yoghurt, smoothies, roast dinners, pancakes. Anything and everything!! All vegan.
Oat milk barista is the best in tea and coffee - delicious.
Truthfully don't miss a single thing. It's all about the flavours, the spices - after all a piece of meat doesn't have much taste to it - it's what you cook it in.

SentimentalLentil · 13/10/2017 21:24

Here have a vegan Biscuit

MontanaSkies · 13/10/2017 21:24

High cocoa solids dark chocolate.

English strawberries.

Moët et Chandon champagne.

A perfect, ripe avocado.

Pasta dressed with olive oil, chili and garlic.

I'm not vegan but those are some of my favourite things to eat and drink. All vegan.

Winebomb · 13/10/2017 21:25

I think there is some good vegan food and think you can get some solid protein from non animal sources.

Agree it must be boring when the only thing you can order from pizza express is a salad though etc!

I am just confused with the ethics of it though. We try to eat less meat due to the environmental costs.

But nost mainstream drugs where tested on animals, or still are, some drugs even contain animal products. I know the last flu vaccine I took had egg told in, as I had to sign that I wasn't allergic to eggs. And didn't one contain pig gelatine?

For me where does veganism stop?

SentimentalLentil · 13/10/2017 21:26

Pizza express do a delicious vegan pizza, they even have a vegan menu now

WomanEmpire · 13/10/2017 21:26

Everywhere does vegan pizza now! Even the local pub.

bluebells1 · 13/10/2017 21:26

Cookies??? We call it Biscuit
