To say that vegans can't really like food?

I mean they don't eat most food so most cooking shows and recipe books are pointless for them. Going out for meals a chore. Birthdays, celebrations, dates... so much of is centred around food which they have to deny themselves and pick around.

I have nothing against vegans and everyone has the absolute right to eat what they want. But trying to cater for a vegan along with other guests is bloody hard work.

Reckon I'll get roasted for this.

I'm an omnivore but we eat meat free a few times a week, and some of our meal choices are vegan. And yeah, they are as good as any of our meat containing meals (otherwise I wouldn't make them). So I can totally imagine that it is possible to eat a delicious vegan diet every day, if you take the time to learn about vegan food.

Blackbutler86 · 13/10/2017 21:27

Im vegan and know how to use herbs and spices plus I buy vegan cookbooks. I love Indian/Thai/Italian/Mexican - I have no problem in finding great food to eat. I also have no problem eating out I went to a Mexican restaurant last night and on Tuesday went Wagamamas to check out their new vegan menu where I had a fab flavourful curry ramen. I think you need to research vegan food a bit more, I suggest instagram #whatveganseat

winewomb

This is the definition of veganism according to the vegan society
'
Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.'

The key bit in that it 'as far as is possible and practical'.
I get vaccinations because their aren't any vegan alternatives and I know I'm doing more damage by not getting them.

AssassinatedBeauty · 13/10/2017 21:33

@Winebomb I think people do as much as they feel they want to. I find it weird when non-vegans castigate vegans for these sorts of decisions when clearly they don't care about it at all themselves.

SentimentalLentil · 13/10/2017 21:34

It's very easy to get sucked into the 'oh vegans are hipocrites because they breathe and there's bacteria in the air' charade but it's pretty petty when antibiotic resistance is cited as a genuine threat to human kind within the next 100 years because of overuse in the animal agriculture industry.
When people can no longer perform a routine operation because we can't protect against infection maybe the vegan food will look a bit tastier.

AlternativeTentacle · 13/10/2017 21:34

Vegan food can be really nice but takes a lot more effort unfortunately

No it doesn't it just takes different ingredients.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/10/2017 21:35

I used to think that but my friend's vegan homemade tortellini is one of the best things I've ever eaten, I even get her to box me up some to take home.
I wish sometimes I was brave enough to be at least vegetarian but I know I'd miss meat too much (especially bacon).

frigginell · 13/10/2017 21:36

You can love food and choose not to eat animal products. I regularly refrain from doing things I'd enjoy, for the sake of ethics, don't you?

Winebomb · 13/10/2017 21:36

Sorry that wasnt an attack in my last post, just more if a musing!

I actually find veganism quite fascinating and like I said we have reduced our meat intake for environmental reasons, I am currently following a couple of you tube channels on eating insects it's all very intriguing to me!

Slimthistime · 13/10/2017 21:38

I'm not vegan
I'm not a fan of cooking
Even I can figure out how to cook for a vegan.
You're just hoping to start a row.

Also, I'm not a foodie either but I don't criticise people who enjoy eating out or watching cooking shows

SentimentalLentil · 13/10/2017 21:38

Sorry womb I was being defensive

To be honest I don't think anyone has the answers but I get tired of people who shout down people who are at least trying.

00100001 · 13/10/2017 21:39

OP. Your ignorance is amazing.

You roll about making odd statements showing you have little understanding of food, let alone veganism.

Yout mistake was to be so... Goadby.

Of you had asked in a genuine manner or asked for help because you'd like to make some sweet treats for your vegan friend. You would like have learned a lot.

But instead you were deliberately inflammatory Confused

Carouselfish · 13/10/2017 21:39

Got a gourmet patisseriere (is that a word? pastry chef!) friend who makes vegan versions of everything. She made a vegan 'cheese'cake the other day! For her it's partly a wonderful science experiment and she's very much about quality and taste.

MiddlingMum · 13/10/2017 21:40

All the vegans I know eat really interesting food. As an almost-vegan and life-long strict vegetarian it's difficult to understand why anyone would want to eat meat when there are so many nicer, tastier and healthier options available.

It hasn't been hard to get vegan food in restaurants for years, although it was sometimes difficult in the 70s and 80s. In my experience, if you order a vegan meal when out with meat eaters, they usually say that your food looks nicer than theirs.

TakeMe2Insanity · 13/10/2017 21:40

Seriously? Thats the best for a friday night.

dnwig · 13/10/2017 21:41

I have just cooked a family celebration meal for meat eaters and vegans.

It was not difficult. Not a nightmare at all.

And all of it was delicious!

SentimentalLentil · 13/10/2017 21:41

The insect thing is interesting. I don't think I could eat them but not from an ethical point of view or even a squeamish point of view, more that the way I view food has changed and I don't think I could knowingly eat a body of a creature now.

brasty · 13/10/2017 21:42

Vegan food can be delicious. Decent Indian places often do great vegan food. Many cities have vegan/vegetarian restaurants. But in ordinary pubs and chains, yes vegan is limited.

Slimthistime · 13/10/2017 21:45

SentimentalLentil, I love your username
Btw I saw something in the Guardian about chickens and antibiotics resistance but my iPad is behaving oddly so all websites have crashed on me today and I could bare,y read the first para of that one, dunno why.

SentimentalLentil · 13/10/2017 21:47

It's so scary!!
Apparently some rivers have he same levels of antibiotics in them as you would use in the blood stream of a patient with an infection, this is due to the run off from fish farms.
I'll see if I can dig out the article, though it may have been the guardian one.

PovertyPain · 13/10/2017 21:47

Right enough, I practically starved to death, tonight. I should really have had some sort of frozen animal piece and some chips. 😒

This is an interesting list of vegan options at UK chain restaurants/pubs. It looks like there's a very decent set of choices.

YABU, Vegan food is the most imaginative, colourful, tasty food I've ever had. Have a look on Instagram and some ofvthe vegan food blogs.
