To say that vegans can't really like food?

DrRisotto · 13/10/2017 21:03

I mean they don't eat most food so most cooking shows and recipe books are pointless for them. Going out for meals a chore. Birthdays, celebrations, dates... so much of is centred around food which they have to deny themselves and pick around.

I have nothing against vegans and everyone has the absolute right to eat what they want. But trying to cater for a vegan along with other guests is bloody hard work.

Reckon I'll get roasted for this.

Which is why you need all the data to know, rather than just guessing.

AndrewJames · 14/10/2017 17:44

The problem with almond milk is not strictly water either, it's also killing bees and could even cause earthquakes.

Vegangelist · 14/10/2017 17:46

I don't consider animals or their bodily secretions to be food, therefore I don't consider that I am restricting my diet in any way (except restricting my chances of heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis, among other diseases).
We can get vegan versions of plenty, plenty enough. Can even make a meringue. And if I can't get a bakery item because it can't be veganised, that is a minuscule price to pay for the satisfaction of knowing my dietary choices are not causing any more animal suffering than they have to (allowing for the occasional insect that is killed by the van driving my apples, or a snail that got trod on.)

SentimentalLentil · 14/10/2017 17:46

but its not only vegans drinking it

AndrewJames · 14/10/2017 17:47

Oh meringues are easy. Just use aquafaba (chickpea water).

But stay away from vegan cakes made with almond meal/milk then, because as I said, bee deaths from that.

PinkPanther27 · 14/10/2017 18:46

Chips?
The best ones are fried in beef fat
Beans on toast?
without butter on the toast and parmesan on top? Nah.
curry and rice?
I'll give you that, there are nice vegan curries. But the better ones have ghee or cream etc, and without a peshwari naan...not really the same
Nachos?
Again, no cheese, or sour cream.

I eat all of these (apart from chips in beef fat, that just sounds gross) and I'm vegan. I make an amazing meal with nachos, sour cream, etc and its all vegan

toffee1000 · 14/10/2017 18:51

A lot of those food choices are surely just personal preference? "The best chips are fried in beef fat" according to you maybe, there will be others who find it not so nice.

SerendipityFelix · 14/10/2017 19:00

Chips fried in beef fat sounds revolting to me. Makes me feel sick. May be the best for you but definitely not for everyone!

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 14/10/2017 19:02

So boring, you are so clearly just a GF.

upsidedown2017 · 14/10/2017 19:12

I'm really interested in eating a vegan diet even if not 100% of the time. Could any of you have said you're eating lovely food post links to some amazing recipes you've tried and loved? Or cook books perhaps?

speakout · 14/10/2017 19:15

Is there such a thing?

SentimentalLentil · 14/10/2017 19:22

That's harsh speak of course there is.

Yes there's loads of lovely recipes etc, you should come and join the vegan threads.

SentimentalLentil · 14/10/2017 19:24

My favourite recipe book is Thug Kitchen, it's a bit sweary but it's so easy to follow and doesn't use unheard of and difficult to find ingredients

Incitatus · 14/10/2017 19:51

There are loads more vegan friendly ingredients and alternatives than there were a few years ago.

I think the increase in milk allergies is leading to more dairy free products. The Free From aisles in the supermarkets grow by the week and there are plenty of resources online to find recipes.

Vegan foods are easy to source and prepare. The only difficulty I might encounter is if the others have fish and chips which is fried in beef dripping so I can’t have the chips, but that’s probably healthier for me anyway. I take fruit, snack bars and some seeded bread out with me if necessary.

Fur and leather is easy to avoid due to modern fabrics and textiles.

toffee1000 · 14/10/2017 20:16

Yeah, "flexitarian" is a thing. Mostly veggie/vegan dishes, but you can sometimes add meat/poultry if you wish.

Slimthistime · 14/10/2017 20:26

I find the term "flexitarian" bizarre. If they were looking for a word that equalled "eats meat once in a blue moon" surely that's not it?

Blue moon meat eater?!

MrsPinkCock · 14/10/2017 20:58

@AssassinatedBeauty

Interesting article.

However, it’s a little misleading.

The only legal decisions in the article are made by the ECHR, which is not technically binding on the UK. Influential perhaps, but not binding, therefore it is not the law as things currently stand.

Veganism is only potentially covered under the Equality Act - it isn’t definitely so and certainly wouldn’t be in every case. In fact, there are no cases in the UK that I’m aware of that have confirmed this to be the case and I had a quick nosy online after reading this article to see if anything cropped up - it didn’t.

The law in this area is open to interpretation until the courts confirm otherwise. It probably will become law at some point, though.

How do you eat butter and parmasan and sour cream and ghee and cream if you are vegan?
Are you a dairy eating vegan? is that a thing now?

AndrewJames · 14/10/2017 22:13

Yeah, "flexitarian" is a thing. Mostly veggie/vegan dishes, but you can sometimes add meat/poultry if you wish

I think you mean omnivore. No need to invent words when we already have them.

PinkPanther27 · 15/10/2017 07:45

@Andrewjames no there are vegan versions of them all. Oatly creme fraiche is heaven on earth 😀

BeyondThePage · 15/10/2017 08:33

Is there such a thing

yes, some people choose to eat all sorts at different phases in their lives, some are Vegan for a while, some are vegan when it is possible - try travelling the world's backwaters as a vegan... surely even eating one vegan meal a week is fine - ok you are not "A" vegan, but still thinking about your own choices.

some things are also not possible without spending huge amounts of money - Vegan car anybody? (tyres made with tallow, steel lubricated with animal fats, glues derived from animals - before even thinking about the interior trim choice)

Carpets or laminate? (both generally use animal glue) - so the whole true vegan lifestyle can be very very expensive - most people will pick and choose which bits to be adamant about.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 15/10/2017 08:50

Are people diet fluid as well as gender fluid these days.

‘Some mornings I wake up feeling vegan so I put on my sandals and long floaty dresses. I still eat meat but inside I’m actually a vegan.’

AndrewJames · 15/10/2017 10:57

@Andrewjames no there are vegan versions of them all. Oatly creme fraiche is heaven on earth

There are vegan imitations of them, that is not the same thing. There is no vegan butter, or cheese or cream, because those words mean non vegan by their definition.

If you like them, that is great. The imitations are much better than they used to be when I was vegetarian (and briefly vegan) 30 years ago. But vegan "cheese" is not cheese.

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/10/2017 11:16

Is peanut butter not vegan then? The word "butter" isn't exclusively used for dairy butter.

"Cheese" can be used to mean things other than dairy cheese, like apple cheese. It's wider meaning includes any food with a cheese-like consistency. Similarly cream, the word cream can mean anything with a cream-like consistency, like salad cream.

Fekko · 15/10/2017 11:36

Vegan cheese is not good but vegan pate is very nice
