When I saw the headline on a news site last night I thought it was referring to the previous case of a young girl who was attacked multiple times in one night by different, unrelated perpetrators. To my astonishment and dismay, I then realised it was another case of this happening.
I too like to think the majority of men, like the majority of women, are law-abiding citizens who don't wish others harm but as many individuals in this thread have said, there are simply far too many cases like this.
Let's put this into perspective: according to Cancer Research UK statistics, 54,800 women in the UK were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. According to Rape Crisis England and Wales, 85,000 women are raped in England & Wales every year. Furthermore, the latter statistic relates to just rapes, not sexual assaults, a man exposing himself to you etc., if we include those then the figure increases fivefold.
We have big events, marathons, campaigns, generous research funding for breast cancer and raising awareness but in reality as a woman you're more likely to get raped in this country than develop breast cancer. Maybe it's time we actually had a serious dialogue about rape as well beyond the "Oh, isn't that awful." when we hear about it. We can't go on just accepting the status quo that 1 in 4/5 women we know will be sexually assaulted/raped in their lifetime.
Can you even imagine the preventative measures, campaigns, legal changes etc. that would be implemented if as many men were subjected to sex crimes?
