To tell the teacher that dd won't be doing the detention ?

Dd came home from school tonight saying that she has been given an after school detention, to be done on monday, for missing a bit of homework that was meant to be handed in today. She went to her lesson and they were all asked for their homework. She told the teacher there was none and the teacher logged onto the online homework portal and showed them the set work, that she had set at 9.30pm last night!
Dd is 14 and was in bed at 9.30 last night. We also have a no computers after 8.30 pm for them all during the week.
Is setting the work that late reasonable?

How do you know that your dd didn't miss it being mentioned in class?

I would guess that if the DD was the only one the assumption would be that she missed it. However if all but two had missed the homework it would seem more likely that it was not mentioned in class.

Its not reasonable to set homework this late and expect it to be completed for the next day. I would raise it with the teacher first (and presumably OP will not be the only one unhappy about this so it should be a surprise to the school) rather than simply tell DD not to do the detention.

Wibblywobblyfoo · 06/10/2017 21:47

Because the teacher didn't take the class. And because she put a note on the portal which said she would be back the next day ( today) and was sorry that they had missed a lesson but they would need to do the work that was needed so they could be prepared for today's lesson. Whatever the reason for her absence must have been very last minute as the children were not covered by a teacher in the class, they were taken to the learning hub (bit like a library/ common/ ict suite) and were supervised by support staff who were running interventions. They were told to get on with quiet reading or outstanding work. Altho it wasn't a great cover situation I pit it down to a one off emergency.

If you mean that the teacher was off ill that doesn't mean a not wasnt left for the supply teacher about homework. Unless the op was in the class I'm not sure how she'd know it wasn't mentioned.

Nanny0gg · 06/10/2017 21:49

What difference would it have made if it had been mentioned in class? It didn't appear until too late to be done that night.

mummwest · 06/10/2017 21:49

Not a hope in hell would my child be doing that detention!

DingleBerries · 06/10/2017 21:49

I would send a very polite non confrontational email to the teacher. No need to go storming in yelling "My child won't do the detention, so there! " but just point out that there has been an error . We all make mistakes. At this time of year teachers are trying to set high standards and are super strict

CorbynsBumFlannel · 06/10/2017 21:50

Maybe the support staff told the children (or some of them) about the homework?

AlexanderHamilton · 06/10/2017 21:51

Even if it was 'mentioned' if homework isn't on a portal whether it be SHowMyHomework or Firefly or whatever how is the student supposed to know what to actually do.

These online portals are generally used instead of planners or giving stuff out in class, not as well as.

Italiangreyhound · 06/10/2017 21:52

I don't agree with after school detention and so would be objecting on all points.

CorbynsBumFlannel · 06/10/2017 21:52

Well it depends what it was. If it was read this chapter then they wouldn't need to wait for it to appear online.
I just think you need to check with the teacher what has gone on. I can't see them saying that they set homework when the kids were in bed and are now punishing them all for not doing it!

littlebird7 · 06/10/2017 21:56

I wouldn't be happy with homework being set at that time. I would check with the teacher asap and make sure you have your facts straight. In my experience there is usually a reason/explanation, but if there isn't on this rare occasion then my dd would not be doing a detention for simply going to bed on time.
As much as we always support the school this seems very unfair

Cynderella · 06/10/2017 21:57

I would send in a polite note to be handed in with the h/w.

A detention in the circumstances seems unreasonable.

If pupils don't hand in h/w, I set a 'detention' next day. If they hand it in then, it's the end of the matter. I always give a day's grace. If they turn up without the h/w, they stay for a detention. If they skip the detention, it's an after school detention.

So, maybe the teacher is saying detention, but really, it's a 'hand it in tomorrow or else' warning?

Ameliablue · 06/10/2017 21:58

I would ask the teacher for clarification but yes it does appear very unreasonable of the teacher.

Willow2017 · 06/10/2017 22:00

Christ on a bike.
All but 2 of the class didn't know about the homework. That kind of tells you it wasnt mentioned in class. And if it wasnt even on the portal until 9.30 at night I doubt anyone else even knew about it.

It's quite clear from op that the date and time stamp show when homework is out on for students. OP saw the portal earlier in the day and it wasn't there.
Why are people finding this such a hard concept?

Threenme · 06/10/2017 22:01

Bloody hell this thread, maybe it was posted earlier, maybe teacher mentioned it in lesson, maybe support staff set it!!
FFS MAYBE AN OWL FLEW IN DD WINDOW AND DELIVERED IT ON A GOLD PLATED SCROLL!
What is so hard to understand dd got homework set at 9.30 pm!!! Op is rightly pissed off!!!

Threenme · 06/10/2017 22:01

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 06/10/2017 22:02

What difference would it have made if it had been mentioned in class?

Because if they had been told to do it in class, they should have done so.

AlexanderHamilton · 06/10/2017 22:06

No Twinset - that's not the culture drilled into these kids. Schools thT havecteachers set homework in class give them planners to write itvin or at least tell them to make a note in a notebook so they don't forget. Schools that use online portals drill it into the kids - all homework is online. Check the portal.

Shiftymake · 06/10/2017 22:06

Corbyn, OP herself has seen the time stamp, and unless it is a hacked one that shows bogus times and dates the teacher in question is in the wrong regardless on how you wish to twist and turn it. Doesn't matter if they were told there would be homework. By 9.30/21.30 most people would be getting ready for bed, in bed even, not checking the portal for homework that didn't seem to come, notified or not. I would be very angry with the teacher as a student to pull a stunt like this and as a parent I would be making myself clear to this teacher that this is unacceptable behavior from her and for future reference that any homework after a certain time needs to have a decent time frame to be completed. I would not allow my child to sit in detention for this.

AlexanderHamilton · 06/10/2017 22:08

I obviously don't know the exact portal the op's school uses but the one ds's previous school used showed times everything was uploaded, the time of any edits & sent an email whenever anything was uploaded or edited.

CorbynsBumFlannel · 06/10/2017 22:08

From the shambles the last lesson sounded it's entirely possible it may have been mentioned and only 2 kids did it. Especially if they are used to it being out online earlier so don't write things down.
I would sooner find out whether there was another explanation than go in to the school complaining that my child got given a detention for not doing hw set when they were asleep only to find out they were told about it a week earlier.
Obviously if it has happened like the op thinks then the teacher was unreasonable. But I would always get their side. Especially when something seems so unreasonable it's hard to see how anyone (including the teacher) would think it wasn't!

lalalalyra · 06/10/2017 22:09

I'm normally one for backing the school/teacher, but I'd be screen shotting that and complaining quite strongly.

Kids shouldn't be punished for their teacher being off sick - which essentially this is given all of the class bar two would be going into the detention.

Teachers shouldn't be encouraging homework to be started that late at night, far less setting it at that time.

bastardkitty · 06/10/2017 22:15

I would be suggesting a detention for the teacher.
