To hate a much loved film with so much passion

I hate the fucking annoying, saccharine voiceover at the opening airport scene
I hate Emma Thompsons irritating character and hammy acting
I hate Hugh Grants insistence on playing himself
I hate how we're supposed to find Martines character so salt of the earth and endearing- shes fucking annoying
I hate the Liam Neeson storyline and his weird relationship with his weird woolly haired kid who should be getting a life
Im left unmoved by Laura Linney
I absolutely cannt stand Keira Knightleys faux coy girlish smile and that entire weird stalker relationship
I can just about stomach Mr Darcy and his Portuguese squeeze...JUST ABOUT
Bill Nighy - once you've seen the song performed once you're like...whatever...zzzzzz

I find the whole film absolutely sick making and toe curling and yet every Christmas DM forces us to watch it.

Broke my heart the first time I saw it.

Jiggler · 06/10/2017 13:50

I quite like Four Weddings and a Funeral. But it's something I tend to keep to myself, a total guilty pleasure.

plantsitter · 06/10/2017 13:51

Love Actually made me cry when I saw it at the cinema. Tears of rage because it's SO TERRIBLE. Honestly. My mum and sister thought I'd gone mad.

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 13:51

I also hated Titanic.
Jack and his drawings, the whole bit at the front of the ship ( why? ) the fact we all knew it wouldnt end well. That song that went onand on and on and on..lack of lifeboats. Hated it.

Jiggler · 06/10/2017 13:53

That is a bit mad to be fair plantsitter. Crying because it was crap?

Clawdy · 06/10/2017 13:54

Love Actually is one of the few things DD and I both agree on. We watch it every Christmas! I agree some bits I dislike ("Where the fuck is my fucking coat?") But on the whole I love it.

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 06/10/2017 13:54

Glad there were two of us, plantsitter!

Yes, I also found Titanic rather offensive. As if the real tragedy alone weren't interesting enough, we have to sit through Jack and Rose shagging in a car. And there was plenty of room on that door.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/10/2017 13:54

Hated four weddings though, Andi. Mcdowell is awful.

I quite like Four Weddings although I agree that Abdi McDowell is terrible. I loathe Noting Hill though. Julia Roberts character is horrible. And Rhys Ifans’ character is so repulsive in it, he makes me feel physically sick.

Jiggler · 06/10/2017 13:55

Oh God, Midnight Cowboy is heartbreaking. Have never been able to watch it more than once. Sad

Pigface1 · 06/10/2017 13:55

YANBU YANBU YANBU.

It's a mawkish pile of crap made by middle-aged perverts for idiots who'll pay them for it (ever noticed that a suspiciously high proportion of the stories involve an older man falling for a much younger, beautiful woman?)

derxa · 06/10/2017 13:56

I've seen glimpses of it and have never watched the whole thing. The worst bit is the relationship between HG and MMc. He's an unreconstructed posh boy and there's not a shred of credibility in him falling for her.
About A Boy on the other hand is one of my fave films.

Grin Grin

What's that....can it be.....could it be......the Jezebel article again?

Pigface1 · 06/10/2017 13:57

(Oops - see someone has already posted the article - perils of starting to write a post then waiting to finish it!)

Crinkle77 · 06/10/2017 13:57

Bridget Jones. I loved the books but Renee Zellweger ruined the film for me.

Pigface1 · 06/10/2017 13:58

jiggler - sorreeeeee!!! In my defence I started writing my post before it had been posted yet!

LineysRun · 06/10/2017 14:00

Pretty Woman is fucking hideous.

Ditto, an Officer and a Gentleman. Or an Orifice and a Genital as my university film club advertised it.

Richard 'hamster' Gere has a lot to answer for. And his Danny in the Grease stage show makes Travolta sound like Pavarotti.

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 14:01

Derxa, nicholas hoult in about a boy is fab. I love the music, HG playing guitar properly at the end, the awful in laws. Toni collette is always good in films. Very underrated actress.

plantsitter · 06/10/2017 14:04

Oh I see you cried too youcanstayundermyumbrella! Unfortunately I think my reasons were a bit less high-brow than yours (though I really like that article).

@Jiggler at the time I was single in London and feeling really, really shit, and that whole Keira Knightley/him off teachers storyline made me sick with rage that they dared create an on-screen London where you slipped out of your front door onto the twinkly Southbank and there was laughter and snuggly jumpers and Keira fucking Knightley didn't have to trawl through match.com (at the time) to get TWO men in love with her. Writing that down makes me understand why they were a bit worried now Grin

Dustbunny1900 · 06/10/2017 14:06

Yep. Saw it and thought "ew". So did my mom

YES to whoever mentioned "grease". It's Creepy
I don't like million dollar baby either

And titanic. Basicallly most romance movies

I'm a Halloween lover but I can't stand "hocus pocus" but fear getting stoned if I mentioned it.

ClayPigeon · 06/10/2017 14:06

I clicked on this thread ready to contribute 'Love Actually' as one of my most hated films and found that's what it's all about.

Ahh, I've found my people. YANBU OP.

CockacidalManiac · 06/10/2017 14:07

Truly Madly Deeply is fucking awful.

ClayPigeon · 06/10/2017 14:07

YY to Grease too. I watched it when I was about 8 for the first time and didn't like it even then.

Capricorn76 · 06/10/2017 14:10

I hate Love Actually so irrationally much that I judge people negatively if I discover that they love it. Weird I know.

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 14:11

Hocus pocus is shit.
I dont like Bette midler much though.
Beaches is also overblown rubbish
