To hate a much loved film with so much passion

I hate the fucking annoying, saccharine voiceover at the opening airport scene
I hate Emma Thompsons irritating character and hammy acting
I hate Hugh Grants insistence on playing himself
I hate how we're supposed to find Martines character so salt of the earth and endearing- shes fucking annoying
I hate the Liam Neeson storyline and his weird relationship with his weird woolly haired kid who should be getting a life
Im left unmoved by Laura Linney
I absolutely cannt stand Keira Knightleys faux coy girlish smile and that entire weird stalker relationship
I can just about stomach Mr Darcy and his Portuguese squeeze...JUST ABOUT
Bill Nighy - once you've seen the song performed once you're like...whatever...zzzzzz

I find the whole film absolutely sick making and toe curling and yet every Christmas DM forces us to watch it.

I was underwhelmed by Love Actually and have only watched it the once. I prefer He’s Just Not That Into You and Valentine’s Day which have the same kind of structure.

scrabbler3 · 08/10/2017 16:37

Minor point, but weren't the Freeman/Page characters body doubles rather than porn stars?

YoureAnArseholeDenise · 08/10/2017 19:09

They were stand-ins so that the film crew could work out lighting etc.

Clawdy · 08/10/2017 19:44

Kk's flat wouldn't have been worth a fraction as much when the film was made.

BreakWindandFire · 08/10/2017 19:55

I have never seen a film with HG in, where he doesn’t play himself

Agreed. Except for Cloud Atlas. But that is a very weird film!

Clawdy · 08/10/2017 19:57

He certainly didn't play himself in Florence Foster Jenkins.

Chestervase1 · 08/10/2017 21:43

Keira Knightley was on an old Kavanagh QC the only thing I recognised was her voice. I realise I’m derailing the thread but I had to check it was her.

SittingAround1 · 08/10/2017 21:47

oh I thought they were supposed to be porn stars. Just wikipedia'd and yes they're body doubles.

SukiTheDog · 08/10/2017 21:50

😁😁😁 I agree with Martine’s character. As if the PM would go for her mindless gibberish. And Alan Rickman’s office fling is so far fetched for me. I like the Keira Knightly and Andrew what’s his name thing. To me, that’s believable... has happened in real life to a friend of mine. Laura Linney needed a good slap!

BurberryBlue · 08/10/2017 21:56

It’s better to view it as fantasy rather than a romcom.I find it strangely endearing.

WheresYouWheelieBin · 08/10/2017 22:24

It’s my favourite movie. For me, it’s about the different forms that love takes - spouses for one another, parents for children, siblings for each other, ones love for their country. It reminds me that when push comes to shove, love, affection, caring etc are some of our deepest and most basic emotions. It was my mum’s favourite movie as well, we always watched it leading up to Christmas. Now that she has passed away that ritual is even more important for me.

HaHaHmm · 08/10/2017 22:33

The deleted scenes of Love Actually are all on YouTube. is from the whole storyline which ended up on the cutting room floor involving the headmistress of the school and her dying partner, cut to make room for Kris Marshall gurning his way across the Midwest and looking for a shag.

I feel genuinely insulted on Emma Thompson's behalf that her performance has to share screen time with that shit.

andherplayfulsheep · 08/10/2017 23:53

Well I didn't like you for this but then someone said Shawshank isn't any good so you're off the hook 😆 anyone who doesn't like that film isn't worth listening to!

AlkaSeltzing · 08/10/2017 23:59

YANBU.
It’s bollocks.
But I get why some like/enjoy it.
Die Hard is the only Christmas film.

CheerfulYank · 09/10/2017 03:20

Oh I love it. :)

My favorite Christmas film right now is Arthur Christmas. :) I cry every time!

bonbonours · 09/10/2017 07:43

I love it and don't care. Whenever a load of people love a film there will always be another load of people who love to hate it. My share will 'hate' some music artist everyone's raving about just because everyone likes them. Years later he buys the album.

Also whoever it was said Shawshank Redemption is rubbish - it's the best film ever. Love it. And so does everyone, it's consistently voted best film of all time. You are weird.

bonbonours · 09/10/2017 08:03

As Gabs said, we don't all like the same things. I have no interest in watching Game of Thrones for example, it looks crap but millions think it's great.

BitOutOfPractice · 09/10/2017 08:38

I think the best bit of LA is the credits where people are meeting their loved ones at the airport. I could watch that all day crying. The rest I can take or leave. It goes without saying that Keira Knightly gives me the rage.

ClariceBeanTuesday1 · 09/10/2017 08:45

YANBU - this film was so bad it made my eyes bleed. As one critic famously said, it is not so much a film, more a series of trailers for a film called Love Actually that have been stitched together. It is mawkish, saccharine, badly acted, badly edited and with a crass line about the Twin Towers at the end. The characters are all two dimensional cliches, and only Bill Nighy is remotely likeable. And that is only because he is Bill Nighy. Also, what a shameful waste of Alan Rickman. (and FYI I am not a film snob, I'll watch virtually anything. Except this.) And @SplendidIsolation, yes, Sound of Music TOTALLY rocks!

randomer · 09/10/2017 08:55

Mama Mia.loathed it.

Jules2 · 09/10/2017 14:10

I'm sorry - but how dare you diss our wonderful Emma Thompson who could never be 'hammy'! There's a lot about 'Love Actually' that's trite and syrupy but Emma's pain at finding her husband has been 'incredibly stupid' and keeping it to herself during the Xmas hols moved me - as did Laura Linney's hopeless - and short-lived - romance. (by the way, I don't like 'Notting Hill'!).

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/10/2017 14:22

Somebody upthread doesn't like Toy Story! How is this even possible?

SukiTheDog · 09/10/2017 14:29

Indeed. Do NOT disrespect Emma T.

tangerino · 09/10/2017 14:36

Haven’t read the thread so apols if this has already been posted. If not, it’s well worth a read, LA-haters. jezebel.com/i-rewatched-love-actually-and-am-here-to-ruin-it-for-al-1485136388

Clawdy · 09/10/2017 15:54

The jezebel article has been posted on here ad nauseum....and on many other similar threads. ( yawn...)
