To hate a much loved film with so much passion

I hate the fucking annoying, saccharine voiceover at the opening airport scene
I hate Emma Thompsons irritating character and hammy acting
I hate Hugh Grants insistence on playing himself
I hate how we're supposed to find Martines character so salt of the earth and endearing- shes fucking annoying
I hate the Liam Neeson storyline and his weird relationship with his weird woolly haired kid who should be getting a life
Im left unmoved by Laura Linney
I absolutely cannt stand Keira Knightleys faux coy girlish smile and that entire weird stalker relationship
I can just about stomach Mr Darcy and his Portuguese squeeze...JUST ABOUT
Bill Nighy - once you've seen the song performed once you're like...whatever...zzzzzz

I find the whole film absolutely sick making and toe curling and yet every Christmas DM forces us to watch it.

Love Actually is utter bilge.

Except I now secretly enjoy it when it comes on because it's such utter tosh I can have a great time criticising the crap out of it, very cathartic.

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 06/10/2017 13:29

I actually (not proud of this) cried with anger when I saw the film in the cinema and I was so relieved years later to find that article, which sets out all my issues with it in such an articulate fashion.

hackmum · 06/10/2017 13:30

I had a good inkling what this film was going to be before I opened the thread. People really do seem to either love it or hate it with a passion.

I still haven't seen it, and in a way I don't want to - I sort of like not knowing which camp I'd fall into. Shrodinger's film.

NoLoveofMine · 06/10/2017 13:30

Watch a proper film like "Sightseers".

sluj · 06/10/2017 13:31

If you dont like it with such a passion, may I suggest that you avoid all opportunities to either watch or discuss it? It will save you a lot of unnecessary angst Grin

Spudlet · 06/10/2017 13:32

Good work posting the Jez article, as soon as I read the op I knew the film and was hoping someone would.

"HEY. DUDE. YOU'RE A DICK. THIS ISN'T ROMANCE, IT'S SOCIOPATHY."

Relevant.

Misanthropesunited · 06/10/2017 13:35

YANBU I knew before too. Can i also submit Grease to this discussion? Or as I like to call it 'we can be together, but only if you change every last part of yourself for me and to impress my arsehole friends' i fucking HATE that film. But it seems to be just me.....

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 13:36

Sightseers is dark. I love that film.

Misanthropesunited · 06/10/2017 13:36

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 13:37

Grease should be banned. I may like LA, but Grease really has a terrible messsage for girls.

Jiggler · 06/10/2017 13:38

Oh come on OP, it's a much derided film. You're hardly unusual in disliking it!

I haven't checked but I''m assuming at least ten people have linked to that Jezebel article already?

ShoesHaveSouls · 06/10/2017 13:38

I really cannot stand Love Actually, and I like most xmas films. I do quite enjoy slagging it off though.

The jezebel article sums it up perfectly.

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 06/10/2017 13:39

Only twice so far, Jiggler. Grin

JemimaLovesHamble · 06/10/2017 13:40

The worst bit is when a gawky loser Englishman goes to America and gets to bag as many gorgeous young American women as he can cope with because of his magical accent - then flies one back to the UK as a gift for his friend Hmm

NoLoveofMine · 06/10/2017 13:42

The80sweregreat if you liked Sightseers you might also like 'Wild Tales'. It's along a similar vein but Argentinian, also very dark humour but a collection of "tales". I love it as much as (if not even slightly more than) Sightseers.

Jiggler · 06/10/2017 13:44

Only twice Youcan? There's usually a stampede of people wanting to be first with with their Jezebel link Grin

I’m indifferent to Love Actually. It’s background Christmas noise that doesn’t bother me too much. The only bit that makes me angry is when the blonde woman answers the bloody phone to her brother when she’s getting down to it with the hottie. Stoopid, stoopid woman.

Iamahppy · 06/10/2017 13:44

YABU love actually, 4 weddings, jack and Sarah, Bridget jones and repeat.

I don't actually admit to this in real life though Grin

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 06/10/2017 13:45

I was first, Jiggler. And so, so proud of it.

guilty100 · 06/10/2017 13:46

No-one who likes and knows about film loves Love Actually. YANBU.

CockacidalManiac · 06/10/2017 13:47

Sightseers is fab.
I love that article posted up there ☝️

NoCanoe · 06/10/2017 13:48

I detest Titanic . It left me totally unmoved. Which is unusual. I get weepy with films.
I've watched it twice. Once with LTP and then my DH. Both looked completely horrified i didn't find it moving.
I'm...oh fuck off....selfish bitch, she could have tried to share her little raft!

CockacidalManiac · 06/10/2017 13:48

Taking of Sightseers; does anyone else think it’s a 21st century update of Nuts In May?

DamsonGin · 06/10/2017 13:48

I think I must have some immune powers as I don't mind Love Actutally, but I would rather slam my hand in a drawer than watch the Sound of Music.

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 13:48

Will give wild tales a go!
The people in sightseers are so horrible, it just makes me laugh.
I have weird taste in films.
Hated four weddings though, Andi. Mcdowell is awful.

ShatnersWig · 06/10/2017 13:49

Love Actually is very high up on my list of most overrated crappiest films along with Four Weddings and a Funeral.
