To hate a much loved film with so much passion

I hate the fucking annoying, saccharine voiceover at the opening airport scene
I hate Emma Thompsons irritating character and hammy acting
I hate Hugh Grants insistence on playing himself
I hate how we're supposed to find Martines character so salt of the earth and endearing- shes fucking annoying
I hate the Liam Neeson storyline and his weird relationship with his weird woolly haired kid who should be getting a life
Im left unmoved by Laura Linney
I absolutely cannt stand Keira Knightleys faux coy girlish smile and that entire weird stalker relationship
I can just about stomach Mr Darcy and his Portuguese squeeze...JUST ABOUT
Bill Nighy - once you've seen the song performed once you're like...whatever...zzzzzz

I find the whole film absolutely sick making and toe curling and yet every Christmas DM forces us to watch it.

I have, so far, managed to avoid all of the films on this thread.

Eliza9917 · 06/10/2017 12:44

I love Love Actually, one of my favourite Christmas/romance films. But then I also love Enchanted with Amy Adams, so that's not saying much Grin

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 06/10/2017 12:45

Another one who knew (hoped) from the thread title. And thrilled to find I was right because I can post my favourite Jezebel link again.

senua · 06/10/2017 12:48

If i refuse to watch Love Actually she turns to me with brimming eyes and says "but...it's Christmas..."

Depends on your definition of Christmas. If your definition is consumerism and targeted marketing dressed up by someone with a PhD in mawkish sentimentality then it fits the bill 110%.

The only redeeming feature is Alan Rickman.

TealStar · 06/10/2017 12:53

YANBU at all. It is just one big luvvy, mutual back slapping, smug pile of tosh. Set against a backdrop of typical Working Title schmaltz, snowscenes, idyllic west london houses and neighbourhoods but-hey-look-at-us-in-a-state-school and shite music. But hey people lap that kind of shit up!

Nikephorus · 06/10/2017 12:53

I like bits of Love Actually so I whizz through the rest and just enjoy what I like. Simple. Just keep control of the remote OP and you're sorted Grin

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/10/2017 12:54

I adore it. It's tripe, yes. So what? I like tripe (metaphorically, anyway - never tried actual tripe Grin). No one else in my family will watch it so I watch alone. I like the bit when Hugh Grant tells Billy Bob Thornton what he thinks of him and I wish more UK PMs would do that to the US president. I like when HG dances around 10 Downing Street to Jump. I cry when Emma Thompson realises what Alan Rickman has been up to. I like the Rowan Atkinson wrapping cameo. I love the Arrivals montages at start and finish. I really enjoy the Bill Nighy storyline, especially the 'Ant-or-Dec' bit. Colin Firth is great. Much of the rest washes over me without actually causing offence.

But yes, It's A Wonderful Life is the best Christmas film by a country mile.

iogo · 06/10/2017 12:54

YABVVVVVVVVVVU. I love it.

I also love The Sound Of Music. Grin

OliviaStabler · 06/10/2017 12:55

It can't be bad, it has Alan Rickman in it.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/10/2017 12:55

The worst bit is the insistence throughout about how fat Martine McCutcheon is. Don’t they keep going on about her ‘gigantic’ arse or thighs?

AllToadsLeadToHome · 06/10/2017 12:55

I must need a lobotomy then, I watched every time it was on TV and then bought a copy.

I hate The Holiday, absolutely loathe it. Why that is on at Christmas is beyond me.

gwenneh · 06/10/2017 12:56

Yep, it's tripe, but it's tripe that has great sentimental value to me, so I shall keep triping on.

CoolCarrie · 06/10/2017 12:56

Alan Rickman has been the redeeming feature in many films, sadly missed

Shadow666 · 06/10/2017 12:57

I love it and watch it every Christmas. I also enjoyed 4 weddings and a funeral and Notting Hill though. I don't care.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/10/2017 12:57

Laiste, I missed that bit. The Sound of Music is wonderful. I cry very easily but even for me that film has remarkable powers. I start weeping quietly at the opening credits and don't really stop till it's over. I've seen it innumerable times. It was the second film I ever saw in the cinema when I was about 6 years old and I've been in love with it ever since.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/10/2017 12:58

I hate Hugh Grants insistence on playing himself

I have never seen a film with HG in, where he doesn’t play himself. He was horribly, horribly miscast in Sense & Sensibility.

pasturesgreen · 06/10/2017 12:58

Go for a walk/find something else to do in another room if you really hate it with such passion? Confused

IsabelleSE19 · 06/10/2017 12:59

I knew this would be LA too! YANBU - it is one of the worst films ever made. It's like Richard Curtis couldn't decide which film to make, so squished about 8 different ones together, ensuring that you don't have time to care about any of the characters. It's a box-ticking exercise in romance cliches. And the Emma Thompson storyline is about as far from feel-good as it gets!

CockacidalManiac · 06/10/2017 13:01

I loathe all Richard Curtis films. Crappy Americanised view of British life.
Not funny either; it’s Mrs Brown’s Boys for posh people.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/10/2017 13:01

The film is utter shite, and cannot be redeemed even by the oestrogen stirring inclusion of both Colin Firth AND the late Alan Rickman(be still, my trembling heart)

ijustwannadance · 06/10/2017 13:01

I hate Emma Thompson's character.
Finds out husband cheating and does..........nothing.

Would've been better if she'd bin-bagged him and left the Joanie Mitchell CD on top with a xmas bow on.

HandbagKrabby · 06/10/2017 13:04

It's awful. I thought I'd seen it before but I watched it for the first time last week and I was infuriated by it. It's so anti women yet it's supposed to be for women.

Who wants a bloke who fancies you so much he speaks to you like shit, films you obsessively on your wedding day and comes to tell you he loves you when you're married to his best mate? Who wants a bloke who demotes you when you're sexually harassed at work and then insists you're a fat, fat, fatty when he deigns to go out with you after you apologise repeatedly for your harassment? Who wants a bloke who's never bought you a decent present after years of marriage and kids but goes straight for the jewellery for his bug eyed secretary? Who teaches little boys that talking to girls like they're people is pointless and actually what you need to do is perform grand gestures instead? If you've fancied someone at work for two years maybe you could have some compassion and empathy for them when they deal with their mentally ill dependent! And the idea that American women will want to shag anybody with a pulse and a British accent is incredibly demeaning to them! And on and on and on. It's a terrible film and everyone involved should feel bad.

peachgreen · 06/10/2017 13:04

This thread has got me all excited for my annual month-long Christmas movie marathon now. Grin

MidnightAura · 06/10/2017 13:04

I love the Sound of Music! So many good memories of it as a kid.

JustMarriedAndLovingIt · 06/10/2017 13:05

Love this film. Might put it on now.
