To hate a much loved film with so much passion

I hate the fucking annoying, saccharine voiceover at the opening airport scene
I hate Emma Thompsons irritating character and hammy acting
I hate Hugh Grants insistence on playing himself
I hate how we're supposed to find Martines character so salt of the earth and endearing- shes fucking annoying
I hate the Liam Neeson storyline and his weird relationship with his weird woolly haired kid who should be getting a life
Im left unmoved by Laura Linney
I absolutely cannt stand Keira Knightleys faux coy girlish smile and that entire weird stalker relationship
I can just about stomach Mr Darcy and his Portuguese squeeze...JUST ABOUT
Bill Nighy - once you've seen the song performed once you're like...whatever...zzzzzz

I find the whole film absolutely sick making and toe curling and yet every Christmas DM forces us to watch it.

AIBU?

I've never seen it.
I cannot abide Hugh Grant.

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 13:06

I have tried to like ' its a wonderful life' , but its dated and jimmy stewarts shouting is annoying!
I love ' love actually ' even though K K is unbearable. Emma thompson straightning her bed while Joni sings in the background is heartbreaking.
The dynamic between the aging rock star and his agent is touching.
Its not perfect, but its not that bad either and i always cry. ( getting old)

DeputyBrennan · 06/10/2017 13:06

You are not alone. Love Actually is rubbish. The only other 'much loved' film I loathe with as much of a passion is Mary Poppins Angry

Eolian · 06/10/2017 13:06

Clicked on thread hoping it would be Love Actually and hoping someone had posted that hilarious and accurate Jezebel article because I'd forgotten where it was from and how to find it. Grin Thanks Youcanstayundermyumbrella!

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/10/2017 13:06

Go for a walk/find something else to do in another room if you really hate it with such passion

It’s a brilliant hate watch. Almost as enjoyable as watching someone you like. Just siting there shouting at the telly...

SasBel · 06/10/2017 13:07

Laiste I have managed to passively avoid The sound of music and Chitty chitty bang bang as well as Love actually.

My favourite film is A Christmas Story which is huge in the States but oddly unknown here. Also Meet Me in St Louis and A Charlie Brown Christmas.

birchandrowan · 06/10/2017 13:07

Even the lovely Colin Firth and the late, adored Alan Rickman couldn't redeem L.A. for me.

The Sound of Music - now you're talking! I would love to have looked like Liesl, so beautiful. She's dead now too, sadly.

wanderings · 06/10/2017 13:08

The only scene I like in Love Actually is the one between Alan Rickman and Rowan Atkinson. "Are you going to dip it in yogurt? Cover it with chocolate buttons?"

The rest is utter rubbish.

KurriKurri · 06/10/2017 13:08

Actually I should amend that to I cannot abide the character HG plays in all his films. In real life I think he's a bit of a twat who can occasionally say something sensible or amusing, - I can take him or leave him. I wouldn;t rush to turn off the telly if he came on as himself, but in films all that floppy haired ineptitude makes me rage.

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 06/10/2017 13:08

You're welcome, Eolian. Truly my pleasure.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 06/10/2017 13:09

It is total tripe, but I love it, it has the feel good factor. There are lots of films I like, for lots of different reasons, they don't all have to be masterpieces to be enjoyed.

I first saw it on the big screen with a new boyfriend well half it it anyway, the other half we spent smooching the relationship didn't work out long term, but it was lovely while it lasted and the movie brings all of that back. There's nothing wrong with a bit of feel good schmooze.

YABU to hate it with a passion, yes.

It's boring tosh made to appeal to the masses (which it does very well), like a Cliff Richard christmas number one. It's simple and formulaic so its guaranteed popularity among casual radio-listeners/film-watchers.

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 13:11

Bill neigy saying ' ant or dec'
' ..say no to drugs kids..or just become a rock star and get other people to buy them for you..'
Makes me chuckle.

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 13:14

The sound of music reminds me of my late mum, so i have a tear at this film. Its very long, but the songs are mostly upbeat.
The real Maria wasnt anything like julie andrews though!

EsmesRedPetticoat · 06/10/2017 13:14

It is truly a terrible film. Also, according to someone on the know, Working Title are terrible to work for!

MrsFring · 06/10/2017 13:16

I used to know Hugh Grant years ago, he was surprisingly nice. My youngest Dd (16) has allowed her mates to believe that she is our secret love child ( she isn't).

You might like this piece by the amazing Lindy West, on why Love Actually is an antifeminist nightmare and also, you know, shit

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 13:19

Im glad that hugh grant isnt that bad, mrsfring. The incident with the prostitute didnt help his cause though!

Majormanner · 06/10/2017 13:20

i hate it so much

gnushoes · 06/10/2017 13:20

I guessed correctly too. Loathe it. The emma Thompson figure putting up with so much shit for starters. Vom.

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 13:20

About a boy is also a good film. My family groan when its on tv as they all hate it.

EllenRipley · 06/10/2017 13:25

@Youcanstayundermyumbrella
