To hate a much loved film with so much passion

I hate the fucking annoying, saccharine voiceover at the opening airport scene
I hate Emma Thompsons irritating character and hammy acting
I hate Hugh Grants insistence on playing himself
I hate how we're supposed to find Martines character so salt of the earth and endearing- shes fucking annoying
I hate the Liam Neeson storyline and his weird relationship with his weird woolly haired kid who should be getting a life
Im left unmoved by Laura Linney
I absolutely cannt stand Keira Knightleys faux coy girlish smile and that entire weird stalker relationship
I can just about stomach Mr Darcy and his Portuguese squeeze...JUST ABOUT
Bill Nighy - once you've seen the song performed once you're like...whatever...zzzzzz

I find the whole film absolutely sick making and toe curling and yet every Christmas DM forces us to watch it.

Truest Madly Deeply made me feel like I had a heart of stone. I hated the characters!

Jiggler · 06/10/2017 14:13

Grease is just depressing. So is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Both those films put me on a total downer.

Jiggler · 06/10/2017 14:14

plantsitter the online dating scene in London can have the best of us weeping into our sherry grin

HandbagKrabby · 06/10/2017 14:15

How can anyone love it? The characters are for the most part utter arseholes and the plot hangs together on some made up magic of xmas shite. Which characters do you relate to? Terminally single workaholic with caring responsibilities? The cheated upon sahm? Her downstairs?

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 14:16

Both charlie films are horrible. There is something disturbing about those ommpa lompa things.
People love the Gringe..hate that film too.

Anymajordude · 06/10/2017 14:16

I've not been able to bring myself to sit through Love Actually. It all looks so utterly bollocks and twee. What I've read about it confirms my view.

Ibbleobbleblackbobble · 06/10/2017 14:17

I love the film.....but kiera knightly.......her voice grinds my fucking gears!!!!!

Jiggler · 06/10/2017 14:17

Oh and The Wizard of Oz gives me the blues too.

ShoesHaveSouls · 06/10/2017 14:19

I can imagine crying at LA because it is so cringeworthy. There's only so much cringe you can take before the tears come...

If the banoffee pie / "I look quite pretty" scene doesn't do it, then the placard holding stalker will, and the airport gymnastics at the end certainly will.

It's really unfair to compare it to stuff like Four Weddings (which is v funny) and Titanic - LA is in a league of it's own for crapness.

tinymeteor · 06/10/2017 14:22

Great minds think alike but don't always rtft Grin

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 06/10/2017 14:22

I really did dislike Titanic though.

MargotLovedTom1 · 06/10/2017 14:23

Richard Gere is a fucking God so I won't have a word said against any of his films - even the happy hooker tripe.
And whenever people go on about Hugh Grant always playing the same character, I feel the need to say: Daniel Cleaver.

orzal · 06/10/2017 14:24

Mamma Mia has to be the worst film ever made.

PeppersTheCat · 06/10/2017 14:24

omg when I clicked to open this thread I said to myself "please be about Love Actually"

ofshoes · 06/10/2017 14:27

If there's much loved but bad movie nominations going on can I just throw dirty dancing into the arena? I've no idea why a movie about a grown man grooming a teenager is so beloved.

HandbagKrabby · 06/10/2017 14:27

I'd forgotten the banoffee pie - nowt wrong with banoffee pie. If she's brought a pigs head or something it might have made more sense for her to be so apologetic about it. And as if the character would be completely unaware of her attractiveness until she saw herself on handycam - had she not seen her husband?!?!!

Rowan Atkinson is good in it. The acting from the thesps is alright but the plot, scripts and characters need to be stricken from the public record.

gluteustothemaximus · 06/10/2017 14:27

I agree!!! Spot on description OP.

I HATE it too.

Keira knightly in anything though decides whether I will watch a film.

derxa · 06/10/2017 14:28

Derxa, nicholas hoult in about a boy is fab. I love the music, HG playing guitar properly at the end, the awful in laws. Toni collette is always good in films. Very underrated actress. Love it! When HG just opens the door automatically to let NH in after school to watch Countdown. So sweet

derxa · 06/10/2017 14:31

Did I mention that I used to work with Hugh Grant's mother? (A bit like the Little Britain character who was Molly Sugden's bridesmaid)

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 14:33

I watched Dirty Dancing with friends who had seen it fifty million times before. I didnt get the hype. The only bit i liked was the dance at the end. Why is she lugging melons about? ( to hide drinks in them i found out later )..he was awful. I am aware im in the minority,

Jiggler · 06/10/2017 14:33

I've no idea why a movie about a grown man grooming a teenager is so beloved.

I don't particularly care about the perceived grey areas of their relationship. I just think Dirty Dancing is a borefest.

MyKingdomForAUserName · 06/10/2017 14:33

Anyone else detest Three Colours Blue?

No, Krzysztof Kieślowski, immeasurable grief does not look like Juliet Binoche eating her ice cream quirkily. No, real women do not (just) "sweat and cough", they fart, scream, get angry. The quiet dignity of the thing gives me the rage.

That's far more of a crime than hating Love Actually, surely?

AnotherShirtRuined · 06/10/2017 14:35

I hate, hate, hate Pretty Woman. Also hated it as a teenager when it first came out. I simply couldn't - and still can't - wrap my head around the idyllisation (is that a word?) of prostitution. I recently re-watched the bit where Julia Roberts enters a posh shop in full hooker getup. Found the shop assistants entirely reasonable in turning her out of the shop.

DonkeySkin · 06/10/2017 14:36

Pigface, that Lindy West article is so cathartic for Love Actually haters. She exactly nails what's wrong with the film, which, when you get down to it, is that it's so overwhelming phony.

My favourite part:

Everything in this movie is fucking insane. That's not how press conferences work. That's not how diplomacy works. That's not how prime ministers work. NOTHING IS HOW ANYTHING WORKS. That's not how weddings work, that's not how audio recording works, that's not how saxophones work, that's not how hair works, that's not how business meetings work, that's not how art works, that's not how grief works, that's not how primary school Christmas concerts work, that's not how airports work, that's not how music charts work, that's not how fat works, and none of it is how "love works."

nutbrownhare15 · 06/10/2017 14:36

Yanbu. I thought it might be about LA. Initially I thought it was disjointed with silly plots and no examples of any actual ' Love'. Cheating, stalking, no strings shagging, lust when you've never even spoken to the person yes, love? Actually no. Then I read the Jezebel article and realised just how woman hating the plotlines are. It's awful, lazy, nasty filmmaking.
