I love the name Venus but i didnt use it as it rhymes with penis and i thought that kids at school might pick on her for that.

I really liked Alice but worried at school she'd get 'Alice has lice!' so picked a different name

CruCru · 07/10/2017 20:54

I love the name Marianne but I knew it would really annoy me if anyone pronounced it “Mary-Anne” or “Marian”.

TinyTickler · 07/10/2017 21:03

Oh PeaPod how sad!

I'm an Alice. That has never happened! I'm not sure it's ever even occurred to anyone! Although at my (French) primary school, we had a reading book called " La Puce". being my sister's name, La Puce meaning "flea"!

TellMeItsNotTrue · 07/10/2017 21:10

I know someone called Alice, she's never had those but she hates introducing herself as 9 times out of 10 she gets "Alice? Alice? Who the fuck is Alice"

sn78 · 07/10/2017 21:17

When pregnant, I really liked the girl name Daphne. But all my friends said it was too old-fashioned and the only Daphne they knew was from the 'Scrooby Doo' cartoon show!

SuperBeagle · 07/10/2017 21:22

sn78 I liked Daphne too, but a few people told me it made them think of someone daft. Sad

Ginnotginger · 07/10/2017 21:47

I really liked Nick for a boy and couldn't decide between Nicholas and Dominic. As soon as I mentioned Dominic, a friend started singing Big Bad Dom from the Domestos advert at the time (25+ years ago). Needless to say only Nicholas went on the shortlist. Had a DD though.
I had to be careful with names as my surname began with an O and as much as I loved Bethan/Bethany i couldn't saddle a child with BO (although my MIL Betty coped with it)

A friend from school was named Susan instead of Victoria as she a D surname. Roll on a few years and the terminology was updated from VD to STD and yes her middle name was Teresa and her married name is also a D initial.

Also my Mum turned down a marriage proposal because ( amongst other things) she didn't want to be Sheila Crump Grin

Oysterbabe · 07/10/2017 21:52

DH and I both love the name Nico but he's not prepared to go with it because he's worried people will say Nick-o rather than Nee-co. I think that's a silly reason as you'd just correct them.

gggrrrargh · 07/10/2017 22:01

BikeRunSki when my family and friends questioned why my firm favourite name was now a definite no, not one person had heard of an Alice being teased for this. I of course had found the one article on Google to support my argument! DD would definitely have suited it.

Sadmum987 · 07/10/2017 22:08

I loved the name Thea for a little girl, however when ours was born it became apparent that her dad couldn't pronounce TH instead it came out as Fear. I swear I'd never even noticed it before but decided we couldn't call our child fear!!

wetpebbles · 07/10/2017 22:09

I really liked Lola but same name as friends large dog

Eminybob · 07/10/2017 22:12

Not me but my parents. Mum wanted to call me Louisa but my dad vetoed because he's dyslexic and couldn't spell it.
Probably a good point as I have had birthday cards recently addressed to Emam (I'm Emma obvs). Bless him I love him to bits.
But I've always been a bit gutted to have such a "common" name, I'd love to have been a Louisa.

superbean · 07/10/2017 22:15

Persephone - because she was raped by her uncle.

Lucus - mucous.

Isabelle - necessary on a bicycle?

Bay - because his name combined with our surname would have made him Bay Tree..(rest of surname).

Jemima - father in law would have called her puddleduck all the time.

That’s just for starters...

superbean · 07/10/2017 22:16

And Tessa

Because I was worried if she was chubby they’d call her Ten ton Tess.

FastWindow · 07/10/2017 22:26

Can't say what we ended up calling our dd as it's a secret :) but to avoid all the negative or well meaning input, we told everyone she would be Tabitha. She isn't, but still really like the name. No I'm not remotely horsey :D

PurpleTango · 07/10/2017 23:40

When eldest DS was born I really liked the name Elliott. Hubby insisted he would be called "Elliott the Idiot". So we searched for names we both liked. We called him Luca (with middle name, beginning with S, that is traditional for eldest son in ex hubbys family) for around a week before a relative pointed out that his initials were LSD.

After a rethink we named him simply Joe. (Joseph being his official name but he has always been known as Joe).

puddleduckmummy · 07/10/2017 23:43

When I was pregnant with DC2, I was doing work experience in a school. We’d pretty much decided on Alfie as a boys name. Until the class I was helping with had a young man called Alfie. Thankfully I had a girl so the fact we couldn’t decide on another boys name didn’t matter in the end!

puddleduckmummy · 07/10/2017 23:45

@superbean you’ve covered my name and both of my children’s names there 😂😂

SistersOfPercy · 07/10/2017 23:53

We'd decided on Megan for DD until MIL gleefully said "oooh, she's a nut! A nut meg!"
After an evening of her young through every variation of nutty we had a rethink.

ShrimpieFlintshire · 08/10/2017 07:30

Really wanted Matthew for DS. But I knew it would inevitably get shortened to Matt at some point, and as our surname is the same word as a colour, I thought he'd end up sounding like a tin of emulsion paint.

AnxiousButFunnyWithIt · 08/10/2017 10:46

When pregnant I chose Astrid, stupidly told MIL who said oh no she’ll be called Arsetrid ?! Put me off but love my chosen name of Skye. Thought about Grace for a bit but her dads as graceful as an elephant so didn’t want to risk it!

Lucyccfc · 08/10/2017 11:57

I liked Alfie too, but couldn't go with it due to the character Alfie in Eastenders. Couldn't have people thinking we named our DS after a soap character.
