Silly reasons why you haven't used a baby name?

I love the name Venus but i didnt use it as it rhymes with penis and i thought that kids at school might pick on her for that.

We loved the name Isla for a girl but our surname is White....

We have family on the Isle of Wight who were the first to point out that it wouldn't really work

Ex DH rejected my choice of Joel for DS because he thought it was too French! Despite me telling him about it also having old biblical origins

DH vetoed my choice of Luke because it rhymed with puke, and Lucas because it rhymed with mucous .

@standingcat my daughter is ruby Walsh we are Irish and the first time I took her to my doc he said on opening her nappy ' I wasn't sure if it was a girl or boy till I opened the nappy we both laughed. She is frequently asked if she knows there's a famous person with her name and always says yes the horse rider

Claudia because it means lame. Who cares?? I still love that name, shall have to save it for a cat.

Olivia because there'd be dozens in the school (not a one!!)

Countless boys names because dp used to play football with someone called that and he was a nob. Dp played football from the age of 7 to late 30s as a semi pro, it was easier in the end to ask who he hadn't bloody played with or who wasn't nobbish.

Blake with dp's surname it sounded like a private detective

Rowan Ruben actually most names beginning with R because of dps surname.

When we had boy twins we just named one each

I wanted to call one of my girls Daisy but mum said it was a cow's name! I wish I'd called her Jasmine but I didn't think of that til she was 7, bit late then.

DD was going to be Bethan but her surname would have begun with a B as well and it sounded like some sort of medicine.

Loads that my mum always has rhymes for - Charlotte - Apple Charlotte, Isabel - Is a bell necessary on a bike!! I point blank refused to tell my mum the final name we chose until dd was actually here.

@Appuskidu I have a Luke I regularly call him Lukas Pukas it amuses us both!

Luke is not good with my scouse relatives and Nathan is not good with my east end relatives because of the pronunciation/dialect issues but I don't care, my accent is fine

dh is dutch and so half of my lovely names were eliminated because they had a G in them (dutch pronunciation of g is quite different)

Then we had to lose all the th names as they would be mispronouced.

Left us a bit stumped, as I liked Bethany, Abigail, Gabriella, Megan

I always loved the name Tess but my husband just completely vetoed it because of Tess of the d’ubervilles or as he likes to call it “the book that ruined reading” for him (he did it at university).

DD1 suggested Louisa as a middle name for DD2 today and it's lovely but I very unfortunately have a step sister called Louise who is a compulsive liar/nightmare

I loved Alistair for a boy. I was reading a book in late pregnancy that had Alistair as the main character. He was great so no problem still using the name. Still reading it in early labour. Alistair then turned into such a dick in the story it put me right off. We were still choosing names in the hospital and I'm very pleased with what we went with.

I used to like Evelyn but then there was a lady I used to deal with at work called that and she was a real pita, she would email and then call 5 mins later to ask if it was done yet (not physically possible).

Then I fell in love with a name which sounds similar but my dh Googled it and said "it means wild bore field, we're not calling her that!" but I still think it's beautiful so she ended up with it as a middle name.

When I was pregnant with my son we changed what we were going to have as a middle name because someone we knew with the same name cheated on his wife and left her while she was pregnant.

DH vetoed Savannah for a girl, because it would be shortened to 'Savvy', and 'what if she isn't very savvy?'

He has also vetoed William for a boy, because he work nemesis is called Will

I did not use Juliet as a second middle name for DD2 because the initials of the three names would have been VAJ.
I am a teacher so I have sadly been put off many names.

One of my family members wanted to have Isabel for her DD.

Until I said “Isabel necessary on a bicycle?”

She was very put out and chose a different name

I loved the name Sebastian when I was pregnant with DS1 but when it came up in a conversation (about a Sebastian someone knew) someone said "Sebastard" and I couldn't shake it off enough to use.

When we got our (female) dog I loved Isabelle and DH said if we called her that she'd be called Isabellend if she misbehaved so we went with another name.

Both totally ridiculous reasons not to use those lovely names.

Our surname begins with D and I wanted Thomas as a middle name for DS2. I loved Samuel til DH pointed out his initials would be STD.

I know a woman who said she'd been seriously thinking about Persophone as a name for her expected DD. I was stupid and said in a shocked voice "Persophone? Really? Do you know what happened to her in the Greek Myth??"

She didn't.

We had to choose a name that "didn't seem like we were trying too hard"
Many names were also ridiculed by rhymes and songs. Eg the sun will come out Tamara and Imogen (imagine) all the people. My suggestion of Elsa was met by Born Free sang sooo loudly. Tbh I'm pleased this one was vetoed as Frozen happened several years later.

I loved Henry (and still do) but some of the shine went off it when a colleague said "oh no, Henry's a hoover!". I went on to have a girl anyway but it does now pop in to my head when I hear Henry.
