Is this a suitable tea for my kids?

So they are having a fishfinger sandwich each with cucumber sticks and a chopped up pear each with 2 Petit filous each for pudding.

They have also had:
Shreddies for breakfast
Mid morning fruit
Hot school dinner each with veg and a pudding
Snacks at the childminders - mixed veg sticks with houmous, pain au choc, raisins and an apple.

My mother was disgusted with tea - she thinks I'm not feeding them properly Confused - they prefer this kind of tea sometimes- like scrambled egg on toast or beans on toast.

Aibu or is my mother?

We had omelette tonight aswell. As we all had plenty in the day and was later home from school and work than usual. Every now and then it’s fine.

Janeybobs · 05/10/2017 18:40

The dinner sounds fine but just to say I work in a state primary and the lunch menus read and sound a lot better tham the reality of the portions :(

noeffingidea · 05/10/2017 18:41

1 fish finger sandwich -
3 fishfingers - 9.5g protein (and those are just the Sainsburys basic ones)
2 slices of bread - 9 gs protein
Equals 18.5gs protein - roughly 1/3 of an adult woman's daily requirement.
Love it when the protein police come onto food threads. Perhaps try just reading a few basic facts about nutrition and then they may come to understand that virtually everyone in the UK eats enough protein without even trying.

Report me to the food/health/carbs police immediately.

Fish finger sandwiches with tomato ketchup - all the time

Scrambled eggs on heavily buttered toast - all the time

Poached egg on dry toast (or thinly buttered if you must) - all the time

Beans with a crack of black pepper and butter and brioche baps - all the time (they can be separated)

I'm hungry!

Elendon · 05/10/2017 18:54

I'm so having a fish supper tomorrow night!

MasterofKittens · 05/10/2017 19:10

Hiphopfrog what would you prepare for your family out of interest? And what do you prepare?

wineandtoastfortea · 05/10/2017 19:35

Omg. Cannot believe the folk poking holes in this. My two have got lunch at school/nursery so I only do sandwiches etc for tea. It's common sense as to what sugary options you add to it! My eldest (7) is v slim and does not stop running and moving, he also generally likes fruit and veg, therefore I'm pretty relaxed with sugary snacks etc. My youngest on the other hand (3) is pretty lazy, hates fruit and veg and has massive appetite for less healthy options, I therefore try to limit the extra crap food that she has (and kick her out the pushchair as much as poss). A yoghurt is not crack.

She sounds helpful
Nothing wrong with it as a one off

grin grin SilverySurfer!
How about that other great culinary treat, the black pudding sandwich?
Are you ready to walk on the wild side!?

OMG no! I am an extremely fussy eater, no foreign food, and not even all English food - black pudding being something I just could not eat. I'm mean you're basically talking about cooked blood aren't you - bleurgh. Nice idea, thanks, but I'll leave that 'treat' to you Envy (sick face not envy Grin

Booboo66 · 05/10/2017 19:49

My kids don't like fish fingers so I miss out now on the delights of a fish finger sandwich/wrap/pitta (all delicious)Hmm

Booboo66 · 05/10/2017 19:59

BitOutOfPractice I know of at least 2 local pubs that serve fish finger sandwiches .. There is hope!

I have started to do this kind of thing. I have started working in the day (as opposed to some evenings and kids at sisters) so the youngest has to have a hot lunch at nursery, DS2 has a free infant school lunch and eldest I pay £2 a day for! Easy peasy as they are ravenous when they get home so I make a picnic on a massive plate, they can eat whilst doing homework etc, mixed veg sticks and peanut butter/houmous, cheese, meats, sometimes a bit of 'pizza' (sandwich thin with tom puree and cheese) some fruit etc

Then they either have a tiny bit of our dinner later or some cereal/toast before bed with a glass of milk. It works well when the eldest has football (5 times a week sometimes!!!!!!)

wineandtoastfortea · 05/10/2017 20:10

Holy shit. I'm now wondering whether to make an appointment with a consultant regarding my excessive consumption (ooh at least twice a week) of Angel delight in the 70's. I mean, I look ok, feel ok but.....

lozzylizzy · 05/10/2017 20:19

wineandtoastfortea

Oooh Angel Delight was fabulous when I was a kid in the 80's. My sister also devoured Findus crispy pancakes (which I did not like). We also regularly had a beefburger as a piece of meat with peas, mash and gravy!

lozzylizzy · 05/10/2017 20:21

IHaveBrilloHair

I love the assortment of pickles. Totally random to me but then again I have a traffic light of tomato ketchup, curry sauce and mushy peas. I also ditch the tartar sauce (too posh in my eyes)

Vickylou78 · 05/10/2017 20:22

Yes Wineandtoast that's the thing isn't it! We all ate fishfingers, potato waffles, beans etc. Followed by generous helpings of angel delight, yoghurts, and sometimes pudding and custard and we all turned out ok! .... sure my mum in the 80's wasn't obsessing about how bad is a petit filous!

wineandtoastfortea · 05/10/2017 20:23

Get yourself and family checked out immediately.

backaftera2yearbreak · 05/10/2017 20:25

Sounds like a good tea to me!

wineandtoastfortea · 05/10/2017 20:26

Vickylou78
Think my Mum would've congratulated herself as a petit filous being akin to a vitamin supplement!

Taratill · 05/10/2017 20:46

wineandtoastfortea my mum raves about the health benefits of Tomato Ketchup! It's got vegetables in it you know! Must be one of your 5 a day!

Vickylou78 · 05/10/2017 21:01

I also think that in many parts of the world, mothers would love to feed there children with something as nutritious of a day as the Op describes! Some may feel lucky just to feed their children one meal a day... it's rediculous the judgy mums making us all feel guilty when we do our best. As long as it's not junk food all the time and they eat plenty of fruit and veg I feel like I'm winning!

Thissideof40 · 05/10/2017 21:02

I love a good fish finger sandwich. Perfectly fine!

MrsWAP · 05/10/2017 21:07

@K425 you need to get yourself some gluten free white bread from justglutenfree.co.uk it’s the only GF bread that stays together and makes amazing sarnies, toast, butties and they even sell tiger rolls too. My life has totally changed since discovering them 💚
