Is this a suitable tea for my kids?

So they are having a fishfinger sandwich each with cucumber sticks and a chopped up pear each with 2 Petit filous each for pudding.

They have also had:
Shreddies for breakfast
Mid morning fruit
Hot school dinner each with veg and a pudding
Snacks at the childminders - mixed veg sticks with houmous, pain au choc, raisins and an apple.

My mother was disgusted with tea - she thinks I'm not feeding them properly Confused - they prefer this kind of tea sometimes- like scrambled egg on toast or beans on toast.

Aibu or is my mother?

When my youngest was 9, he'd have decent breakfast, school dinner (usually a funny mix of hot and salad when I could get him to tell me what he'd had), and typically a ham sandwich during after school activities. Bit of fruit thrown in. On the 3 days he was late I'd give him a small snack in the car because he was too tired to eat if I waited the 10 minutes till we got home.

RideOn · 04/10/2017 20:33

Sounds fine to me!

DontbouncelikeIdid · 04/10/2017 20:36

It sounds lovely. I used to love fish finger sandwiches for tea when I was a kid. The difference was that I didn't eat my school dinners because they were hideous. I am still perfectly healthy at over 40, so didn't do me much harm.

fairyofallthings · 04/10/2017 20:36

Apart from the petit filous I'd say it's OK, the petit filous are very high in sugar. Fish fingers every now and then is OK.

squizita · 04/10/2017 20:40

My mum had the pattern of light two meal, full the others. Ie a salad or sandwich for lunch meant a bigger dinner, or a big cooked lunch meant a lighter tea.
It seems perfectly natural to me. Better than over facing them with something big when they are still full!

Mine also likes a light tea like beans on toast or (her favourite) separate portions of buttered roll, cold meat, salad and sweet corn ... because she dislikes sandwiches but likes sandwich components!

squizita · 04/10/2017 20:45

I'm amused by the "mn warriors" who on the same page tear their hair about it being too much AND too little.
And who don't seem to notice that chicken, fish and indeed dairy contain protein. Can we not pass on this generations faddy obsession with protein to kids, who should mainly be eating unprocessed carbs for energy with plenty of veg and some protein. They are not mini yo yo dieter middle aged women with a load of online misinformation, they follow the old fashioned portion plate FOR KIDS.

littlebillie · 04/10/2017 20:58

There is a restaurant near me and their speciality lunch is crispy fish finger sandwiches with tartar sauce and pea soup, it's delish!

Laine21 · 04/10/2017 21:00

Your children are happy, they are healthy, they are eating, they are not starving. Maybe she's jealous she never thought of them when she was a young mum 😂

My ex still had fish finger butties in his 40's a favourite food from his childhood.....and yes salad cream or tomato ketchup on! Mind you can't see new wife making them for him! LOL

ChoudeBruxelles · 04/10/2017 21:03

DS has had a steak bake type slice, fries and baked beans followed by an apple and some grapes then a magnum. Not my finest cuisine but he wouldn’t eat the home made curry I’d made.

LuluJakey1 · 04/10/2017 21:06

DS had a boiled egg and toast for tea- that is all he wanted. Stewed apple and yoghurt as pud.

Ttbb · 04/10/2017 21:10

Not great but hardly child abuse. So long as this is an occasional thing I don't see any cause for concern.

TheFairyCaravan · 04/10/2017 21:17

When DS1(22) is home at weekends/on leave he'll often have a fish finger sandwich when we've all gone to bed. The next morning he'll say to me "I wasn't going to have one, mum, but the hamster insisted he wanted one so who am I to deprive him?"

DH and I had a really busy, tiring day a few days ago so we had fish finger sandwiches for tea.

There's nothing wrong with it imo.

martellandginger · 04/10/2017 21:21

I’m of the opinion that people of all ages are obsessed with hot meals. I follow one rule for every meal 1 third carbs, 1 third veg and 1 third protein. Cold warm or hot - makes no difference to the nutrients.

Skittlesandbeer · 04/10/2017 21:26

...as long as they are sustainably caught fish fingers, right? Wink

My mum was horrified when I served my 3yo some tinned corn kernels as part of lunch on holidays once. Told the whole village about what a bad mother I was. Still gets mentioned in dispatches (kid's 7).

The problem wasn't the corn, it was the 'going on holiday with DM' part. That's been resolved.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/10/2017 21:27

Its a fish finger sandwich.

No one can bitch about a fishfinger question.

They rule

VinoTime · 04/10/2017 21:49

They are fed, happy and not complaining. These are all good things, OP! GrinWink

I love fish finger sandwiches. I like to indulge whenever I can get to Lidl nice and early to snap up a fresh tiger bread loaf - my mouth is watering at the thought! Oooft. That beautiful, crunchy crust with butter and red sauce, and perfectly cooked fish fingers...

Serenitymummy · 04/10/2017 22:40

You're all mental if your fish finger sandwiches (crispy battered ideally, but breadcrumbs will do) don't come with slices of cheese in them. Cheese on one side of bread, mayo on the other. Ff on top of the cheese to melt it a bit. Heathen dh has ketchup instead of mayo like some kind of animal. But seriously, the cheese!!! Grin

SleepingStandingUp · 04/10/2017 22:47

Ketchup, DS is right. Cheese is wierd

MattAffleck · 04/10/2017 22:55

I'm pretty disappointed that I've read three pages of this thread waiting for it to descend into the usual food thread, organic kale with a boiled egg, that normally happens. And only a few people have stated they think it's an unsuitable meal, even fewer have slipped in that they get their shop delivered by Ocado.

Sad

What's happened??? I've been deprived of one of my favourite type of threads.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/10/2017 23:10

I ONLY FEEDMY CHAD ORGANIC KALE AND EGGS FROM OCADO.YOU'RE A TERRIBLE MOTHER

delilahbucket · 04/10/2017 23:12

It's fine. The major issue in that days food is too much fruit as well as yogurt and pudding at school.

tigercub50 · 04/10/2017 23:33

Wish DD would eat half of that! She wouldn’t even touch the cucumber!

milliemolliemou · 04/10/2017 23:50

Now I have another interpretation of FFS. Fish Finger Sandwiches. I am a glad and happy person.

But yes to too much sugar (didn't want to disappoint you all) Petit Filou, pain au chocolat - would go the FFC (full fat cream) yoghourt with no added sugar and just a dollop.

Have never had a FFS but will investigate.

MattAffleck · 05/10/2017 06:25

Thanks Sleeping, that's more like it Grin

notagain123456 · 05/10/2017 12:55
