Is this a suitable tea for my kids?

So they are having a fishfinger sandwich each with cucumber sticks and a chopped up pear each with 2 Petit filous each for pudding.

They have also had:
Shreddies for breakfast
Mid morning fruit
Hot school dinner each with veg and a pudding
Snacks at the childminders - mixed veg sticks with houmous, pain au choc, raisins and an apple.

My mother was disgusted with tea - she thinks I'm not feeding them properly Confused - they prefer this kind of tea sometimes- like scrambled egg on toast or beans on toast.

Aibu or is my mother?

your mum is being unreasonable. Now I want a fish finger sandwich

Sara107 · 03/10/2017 19:22

They've had their main meal at school and a substantial snack at the childminder. They probably aren't that hungry. Would you give them 2 dinners and afternoon tea at the weekend? (I hope the answer to that is no!!). Often my DD isn't very hungry after having afterschool club snack.

LellyMcKelly · 03/10/2017 19:23

You had me at fish finger sandwich.

Verbena37 · 03/10/2017 19:23

orange there’s plenty of protein...fish finger and petit filous and milk from breakfast and meat for lunch.

becotide · 03/10/2017 19:24

ohhh I haven't had a fishfinger sandwich for so long

Unihorn · 03/10/2017 19:25

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo
Fish ginger?! Grin

We had sausage sandwiches for tea, with no fruit or veg on the side and crisps afterwards... I think I win.

Badders08 · 03/10/2017 19:26

I'm 44 and I had a fish finger sandwich last night!!

Raisedbyguineapigs · 03/10/2017 19:26

Sounds fine. I agree with the PP who said to tell your mum to cook them dinner in future. My kids used to eat 2 petit filous too, but they ate them a lot so I stopped buying it. I buy a big pot of yoghurt now that has lower sugar and spoon it into a bowl. At least they have had cucumber sticks and fruit. My mum used to criticise the food I gave my kids too. But normally it was because 'I wasnt giving them food they liked, thats why they were so skinny' meaning I wasnt giving them chicken nuggets every day! I think some granny's just criticise for the sake of it, so they have some sort of say in their GC's lives that they know they have no right to.

annaharvey · 03/10/2017 19:27

I think its perfectly fine. With regard to the veg, you could be more creative to try different kinds of veggies everyday.

TinselAngel · 03/10/2017 19:28

The whole point (to my mind), of one’s kids having school dinners is that it means you don’t necessarily have to cook their tea.

maddiemookins16mum · 03/10/2017 19:28

a) they don't need 2 petit filous

And

b) there are no yorkshire puddings

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 03/10/2017 19:28

Grin on my fish ginger sandwiches. I like ginger, but never tried it on fish fingers!!

Esspee · 03/10/2017 19:30

Over the course of the day your children have been well fed. Your mother needs to pull her head in.

It's fine! It's a normal-to-good day's food for the vast majority of children in this country.

Mine had mashed potato and tinned sausages and beans followed by tinned peaches for tea today Grin. And one of them doesn't eat veg at all.

CamperVamp · 03/10/2017 19:32

Why do they need more protein?

Milk at breakfast
Whatever was in school lunch
Hoummous
Which with the grains in Shreddies and bread gives the full complement of amino acids (pulses plus grains)
Fish
Milk in petit filous.

A bit more green veg over the week would fill some gaps.

Shockers · 03/10/2017 19:35

OP, I once made my own fish fingers and used quinoa for the crumb Grin.

The haddock alone cost me £11 for a family of 4... Shock

CamperVamp · 03/10/2017 19:35

I put tartar sauce in our FF sandwiches.

House4 · 03/10/2017 19:36

My child: sausage and chips take away on the way home from youth club tonight. There OP, have I made you feel better? Grin

House4 · 03/10/2017 19:37

Sorry I should add he eats really healthy most days, before I get told off!

PandorasXbox · 03/10/2017 19:37

Sounds lovely.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 03/10/2017 19:40

A little more protein? There's plenty in fish fingers, plus in the petit filous and the milk on the shreddies and some in the houmous and even a bit in the bread plus whever is in the regulation measure of protein in the school lunch.

TheWernethWife · 03/10/2017 19:46

Child of a single mother here - had free school lunch and then came home to either: Heinz tomato soup, beans on toast and variations on something eggy. Yogurts were a thing of the future in the 60's.
