"Those adjectives were questions and not accusations?!?!?!?"

But dependent on the state was one of them.......

YokoReturns · 03/10/2017 20:11

Not Overjoyed

Haven’t rtft

Myrobalanna · 03/10/2017 20:11

How would I feel?
Awful. Bereft. I'd feel like a failure.

I wouldn't say anything like that but I would be reassessing my parenting.

BertrandRussell · 03/10/2017 20:13

"On Mumsnet, its absolutely fine to i sult and stereotype people - as long as its the right type of person, obviously..."

You have noticed that the overwhelming majority of people have used the word "disappointed"? Not devastated or disowning or any other word beginning with d..........

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 03/10/2017 20:15

Mine are firm Saint Jeremy supporters. I deal with this philosophically. They are 9 and 10 so the right age for that caper. Get it out the way early.

YokoReturns · 03/10/2017 20:15

Yeah, suffice to say I’d feel like I’d failed as a parent.

I teach DS1 and DS2 that compassion, kindness and empathy are the most important qualities in life. Joining the Tory party would suggest they hadn’t been listening. Or that they were reacting against those qualities.

AyeAyeFishyPie · 03/10/2017 20:15

Um - two posts above says 'bereft'. And lots of others say similar.

Graceflorrick · 03/10/2017 20:17

I would think that I'd failed to teach her clearly enough about equality, compassion and humanity. In short, it would tell me I'd failed as a parent.

HateIsNotGood · 03/10/2017 20:17

Did OP ever come back? A+ for throwing the pigeon amongst the cats. In 22 pages of virtual vitriol towards 'ideologies' did anyone call troll or DM journo as is usual now on MN?

Nope - coz a red mist descended. Hopefully OP is only a student looking for material.

What does a question mark signal?

?

(clue's in it's name)

Those adjectives were questions and not accusations?!?!?!?!*

Oh, please, the meaning was clearly inferred in the tone of the rest of your post and subsequent replies.

mogulfield · 03/10/2017 20:20

hate I thought that, it's a bit random to say a 'friend of my daughters wants to be a conservative', what do you all (you lot there with your opposing political opinions) think?
There was enough bickering on here during the general election. It was lovely when that ended!

Ontopofthesunset · 03/10/2017 20:23

I'd be frankly amazed as it would mean he'd had a Damascene revelation overnight and had completely changed all the views he'd held up till now.

If this came out of the blue and he'd never expressed differing views, I'd be pretty surprised and bit disappointed, but would put it down to a slightly odd rebellion against his parents.

BertrandRussell · 03/10/2017 20:25

Why would you not be allowed to feel bereft? If you feel, as I do, that Tory policies and the Tory leadership are pretty morally bankrupt, why would you not feel upset if a child you had raised espoused those values and those people?

SpikeGilesSandwich · 03/10/2017 20:30

Very proud. Especially after all the left-wing brain-washing from schools and from the media.

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 03/10/2017 20:31

You can feel what you like but if you feel bereft, or think you do, the only conclusion the sane observer can draw is that you don't know what bereavement is. Or that you're daft.

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 03/10/2017 20:33

On reflection, actually, I think to use the word bereft in this context is quite insulting to those who actually have lost children.

AyeAyeFishyPie · 03/10/2017 20:39

karlos you put it far better than I could. The hyperbole is just ridiculous and, as you rightly say, actually quite unsulting. But no - thou shalt not argue with some of the left on Mumsnet

CreamCol0uredP0nies · 03/10/2017 20:40

I would respect his decision and enjoy discussing politics with him.
We would also address the range of views within each Party.
I would be much more alarmed if he came home and said he'd joined Momentum.

Restingwitchface · 03/10/2017 20:41

Bereft. Failure. I'd rather they were taking drugs.

Shock
Megabus · 03/10/2017 20:42

karlos, bereft does not only mean bereaved. It is also used if something is lost/lacking/removed

HateIsNotGood · 03/10/2017 20:42

Leaping over my previous post, why are Conservatives considered morally bankrupt? Is it ok to be economically bankrupt? What about a government that came in to "there is no money left". If it were a household most MNers would give advice about savings here and there. During my dealings with people over many years I have found nice ones, bad ones and the rest. Nothing any person did or how they behaved in real life was connected to any party they voted for.

I don't see what's wrong with Theresa May, quite like her and Corbyn too, I see things wrong with the population's understanding of politics; where the art of debate and therefore decision-making has gone awry. I think the politicians respect their opponents more than the non-politicos do.

To disagree is democracy, to just hate without respect and reason isn't, it's that sort of thinking that leads to extremism.

JustDanceAddict · 03/10/2017 20:44

Upset tbh. Mind you, I wouldn’t want them near labour atm either but we all beer to the left in this family even though we are not happy with Corbin.

BertrandRussell · 03/10/2017 20:45

"You can feel what you like but if you feel bereft, or think you do, the only conclusion the sane observer can draw is that you don't know what bereavement is. Or that you're daft."

Sorry? Can bereft only be used about bereavement? I honestly did not know that. If it's true then I absolutely apologise..

Oh, and the "rather be taking drugs" posts were obviously tongue in cheek!

Orangebird69 · 03/10/2017 20:46

Pretty chuffed that they had any interest in politics at all tbh. At 16, all I was interested in was 20 Silk Cut and the only debating I was into was Mirage or Taboo.

Bornfreebutinbiscuits · 03/10/2017 20:51

Oh dear on page one and can't trawl through. I would be thrilled, it would show an interest in polictics first and foremost but also an independence of thought. In this family above all else independence of thought is prized above thrusting our ideas on our dc by debating them into a particular view point. Thankfully dh and I are slightly differently polictics wise so we don't have to brain washing clan set up here to brain wash them into one or the other.

I also point out that teachers are generally left wing and indeed the full on trotsky ite taught, teaches at top London uni.. And that her education will be from such off balance teaching.
