How would you feel if your 16 year old DS wanted to become a 'young conservative'

That is all!
Opinions please.

OP posts:

"I am everything the Tories despise."

Bigoted? Uneducated? Dependent on the state?

I'm not sure what you're alluding to.

Can you show me where the Tories have explicitly said that they despise gay children with MH issues and lone parents or is this something you've inferred through your benefits being cut / scrutinised?

Show me one homophobic or disablist comment which has been allowed to stand and unchallenged by the party leadership.

How would you define your 'rights'? Is it all connected to the support you feel you're entitled to?

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 03/10/2017 18:55

Haven't read the thread but I'd make sure he'd seen 'Daniel Blake' and the entire series of Broken', volunteered at a food bank and read some decent novels and newspapers. Then he can vote for who he likes.

Frequency · 03/10/2017 19:00

Where did I mention my benefits? Which benefits do you assume I am claiming?

The Tories have slashed spending in MH and education, unfairly target single parents with benefits sanctions (not mine I might add, but whether I was claiming unemployment benefit or not, I would strongly disagree with any policy which unfairly targets single parents) and historically TM voted against gay adoption and the repeal of section 28, so I'd really rather not entrust my daughter's rights to a party led by her.

TipTopTipTopClop · 03/10/2017 19:11

I have a 15 year old conservative, although I don't think he's joined the party. Privately, I feel it's a bit backwards (a conservative at 25 has no heart and a liberal at 35 has no head and all that) but to each their own.

ForalltheSaints · 03/10/2017 19:12

Disappointed that he was so selfish.

Oldie2017 · 03/10/2017 19:12

There are a lot of myths about Tories on here. We are good mean and women and are at about half the nation! Labour did not get elected. Labour just feel really fed up about that so it comes out as very unfair criticism of the Tories of the UK - the vast, vast number of Tories. We are not some alien awful species. We are everywhere and we are very good fair people who want what is best for Britain and are better at it than Labour is hence labour did not win power.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 03/10/2017 19:18

I think anyone who votes Tory is complicit in the abuse of women, or at least condoning it, actually since they've gotten into bed with the DUP.

Seriously?

So you'd be ok with people making sweeping statements about Labour voters condoning anti semitism or Corbyn and his 'friends'? No thought not.

Creambun2 · 03/10/2017 19:20

"Want what is best for Britain" snort yeah they want the best for British people as long as you aren't poor or disabled.

Oldie2017 · 03/10/2017 19:20

Lots of myths are being put out by desperate Labour voters with sour grapes because Labour did not win power. Labout has not even managed to get a woman Prime Minister in power. It is a party run by old white men with a lot of working class sexism engrained in it too.

KennethCat · 03/10/2017 19:21

Surprised - ds1 is a teacher and very much affected by the Tory cuts. I'm a nurse, ditto seeing the reality of the Tories and their effect on the NHS. So I'd be both surprised and gutted, tbh

BakerCandlestickmaker · 03/10/2017 19:23

Well said Piglet. My dear mum voted for Corbyn's and McDonnell's Labour. We just don't go there any more. People need to get a realistic view of voting and not this hyperbolic nonsense that pits us as enemies.

hibertMcSchlibert · 03/10/2017 19:26

Which benefits do you assume I am claiming?

Most of them.

Megabus · 03/10/2017 19:26

Lolz Grin

flyingspaghettimonster · 03/10/2017 19:30

I'd be very surprised. I'd probably want to hear which policies they were keen on and what they thought was wrong with the other options. If I found they hoped to become a more moderate conservative and change the party from the inside, I'd be fine with it. But I would still be sad.

It's hard for me to really understand exactly what conservative England is like now as I have lived in america for 12 years. But if my child came home and wanted to be a Republican I think I would be devastated. I am reaching a point where I can barely stand to keep republican friends on Facebook, since they seem in such denial over Trump and racism. The thought that one of my children might end up like them makes me nauseous.

Frequency · 03/10/2017 19:36

I claim WTC and CTC, along with 323,000 other single parents of two children.

Are all 323,000 of us uneducated, bigoted scroungers or just the ones who vote Labour?

and they say it's the Left who get nasty and resort to personal attacks

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 03/10/2017 19:36

I agree there is denial over Trump and racism however denial isn't just a problem of the right.

The labour left have issues too that they refuse to address or try to play whataboutism instead.

careerandfam · 03/10/2017 19:39

Very proud

drfostersbra · 03/10/2017 19:41

I would be absolutely gutted.

You're the only person using words like scroungers or uneducated. No one else has.

"Are all 323,000 of us uneducated, bigoted scroungers or just the ones who vote Labour?"

I suspect that most of you 0.5% do vote Labour - for obvious reasons.

Shockers · 03/10/2017 19:54

I'd hope it was just a phase.

"I am everything the Tories despise."

Bigoted? Uneducated? Dependent on the state?

^

Did I not read that correctly? Confused

ShotsFired · 03/10/2017 20:03

So we all know, deep down, that Labour has a spectrum of
good stuff shit stuff.

And we all know that the Tories have their own spectrum of the same.

Yet what seems to be permeating through this thread is only the good half of Labour; and only the shit half of the Tories. Which is just a stupid way to debate anything. What a shame the OP phrased such a goady post, when it could (maybe) have been a half-intelligent discussion.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 03/10/2017 20:06

Completely agree @ShotsFired

What does a question mark signal?

?

(clue's in it's name)

Those adjectives were questions and not accusations?!?!?!?!

AyeAyeFishyPie · 03/10/2017 20:08

Great example of when Mumsnet is a completely parallel universe. In real life people just get in with each other even if - shock horror - someome else is a member of an entirely legitamte, mainstream party.

On Mumsnet, its absolutely fine to i sult and stereotype people - as long as its the right type of person, obviously...

And people wonder why Trump and Brexit triumphed.
