Crushed velvet sofas/beds/curtains.

Also wooden letters in the kitchen/bathroom that's say 'Cook'/'Bath' etc telling you what each room is for.

While I'm at it- wall 'art' (stickers) with cheesy phrases.

Whats wrong with a bit of grey? I love grey Blush, my living room is grey, black and white and we love it. My DM on the other hand hates it. I keep reminding her it's my house, I pay the mortgage and I decorate it how I wish.

My MIL passed comment on 'Ewwww grey, how depressing', decorated her living room this year and it's got grey walls, grey furniture, grey carpet! Obviously it grew on her!

What we need to remember is that everyone's tastes are different. What one may see as tacky or awful, another may really like it. In answer to your AIBU, no you're not BU as to hate them as that's your choice to do so, but you would be U if you were passing judgement on other peoples choices based on what they like :D

Bring back the net curtain No no no! Oh god, I hate net curtains. They just make me think of 1980s decor. Dps have them because they live on a busy street with nosey people.

nokidshere · 03/10/2017 09:38

In the 35 years that i have owned a house the trends have changed many times. We have had clutttered rooms, colourful rooms, curtains, blinds, nets, magnolia, Laura Ashley floral...how we decorated didn't so much get dictated by a trend, but rather what our lifestyle was at the time. And money of course.

So our newly wed home was cluttered & messy, with lots of mismatched furniture donated from various relatives, throws, lamps and spider plants.

The parenting years brought colourful (washable) walls, heavy duty laminate flooring, leather sofas, toy boxes, practical blinds and a lot of 'stuff'. The Ikea years Grin

Now with older teenagers the walls are a mix of magnolia and greys, comfy sofas, soft flooring in a mix of greys and black, no clutter, and lots of lovely accent colours of yellow, purple, lime green (not all in the same space). It's peaceful, calm and uncluttered. And better quality because of more disposable income.

I love my home, I don't care if no-one else does and I don't care how my friends and family decorate theirs.

DaisyDrip · 03/10/2017 09:41

Re net curtains. I have voile curtains and blinds. The voile's stay closed and I just close the blinds at night. It keeps your privacy while not having the net curtain look.

I knew a woman who had vertical blinds and really fancy lace curtains to match, they cost her a bomb, she did the same as me, kept the lace curtains closed and closed her blinds at night. They looked amazing from the outside, not net curtainy (not a word I know) at all.

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 03/10/2017 09:41

I like the look of plantation shutters but I would find them a pain as they seem unwieldy to open, close and clean.
I love fairy lights
I love grey

hierto · 03/10/2017 09:46

I like the grey a lot, the trouble is so does every other person. It's everywhere, homes and businesses, inside and out. It's going to date quickly and dreadfully.

Mustang27 · 03/10/2017 10:01

@PickAChew that house is bloody soulless. Shame is the building and gardens are beautiful but some definite work to restore it to anything remotely homey.

Sorry if that’s is someone on mumsnets house.

Do what you like! Who cares what others think. Miserable F***s

WashingUpWarrior · 03/10/2017 10:44

Of course YABU! As am I. :-) Here are my utterly uinreasonable peeves:
Words as decorating, especially when they state the obvious (BATH, COOK), should be outlawed. Even worse are inspirational/uplifting/sentimental/pseudo-wise or /semi-funny texts on walls. They always make me want to hit someone.
While twigs hearts are fine in someone else's house I avoid hearts altogether.
Open-plan is just awful and impractical. I can't understand why anyone would want their kitchen, complete with smells, in the living room. Not to mention the lack of privacy.

I wasn't aware of crushed velvet being used in home decorating before this thread, but I do think the bed in the photo above looks rather nice.

juliecorrigan · 03/10/2017 11:07

If you don't like, don't have. It's simple, but let others enjoy their tat.

The chevron cushion that is!

keffie12 · 03/10/2017 12:53

Thank goodness I am not on my own! Trashy, looks cheap, crass and nasty. Wouldn't give any of them house room. Paperdoll I totally agree with you about it looking common . I also can't stand loads of nick knacks everywhere. Who the hell thinks velvet looks lovely! It's vile to look at and touch

YANBU to hate these trends, but I would be VU to invite any of you lot to my house. It's not that I have any of those things you hate, but the level of judgmental criticism of people tastes here is quite astounding - even if it's light-hearted. 🙄

Bluntness100 · 03/10/2017 13:43

Meh, I think you’re reading it wrong. For example I don’t like shiny leather sofas. A close friend has one, I’m often to be found lying prone on it nursing a hangover, I don’t judge or criticise her, I just wouldn’t have one myself. Who cares. I’m sure she wouldn’t have my sofa in her house. We have more fun things to discuss than our sofa tastes.

We all have different tastes. So we don’t furnish our homes in things we don’t like. Every single one of us will have crap in our house someone doesn’t like.

I’m rather partial to fairy lights and love hearts for example. I couldn’t care less if every single person on earth hated them, they will be in my home for as long as I like em. Grin

What's your house and furnishing like, Keffie?

Oh no, having just read the full thread I am mortified Blush
The decorator is currently painting two thirds of our house a nice mid grey colour......... once he is finished the carpet is being fitted which is a nice pale grey colour (noticed a theme here?)
Oh well, my house will be as I like it so if it is out of fashion by next week who cares! Grin

Zaphodsotherhead · 03/10/2017 14:49

Who'd want an on-trend, fashionable house anyway?

You'd be having to redecorate every six months. As long as you like it, who cares? (Although I still think velvet sofas would be covered in cat hair after a week).
