Crushed velvet sofas/beds/curtains.

Also wooden letters in the kitchen/bathroom that's say 'Cook'/'Bath' etc telling you what each room is for.

While I'm at it- wall 'art' (stickers) with cheesy phrases.

the "try so so hard" pretentious stuff like a bathroom with a 50 dollar yankee candle that's never lit next to the huge shell they got on their scuba trip that they really want you to ask about/ the faux rustic thing with the two little pieces of firewood set at a "casual" angle against the spotless fireplace/the huge les mis book sitting on the table (obviously never even been cracked)/ and their accolades decorating the wall in the living room.
Or the really cold, hard-looking minimalist look with metal and mirrors and steel gray. Pure White carpeting.

And if I'm going to be a judgey asshole, precious moments stuff.

pictures of Audrey or Marilyn or the damn Eiffel Tower. Live laugh love. Picture frames with "perfect couple" and "true love/forever/memories/etc" all over it. I live in New England and I think south western decor here is just bemusing and super out of place. Even though it's pretty in the south west.

Raisinshoes · 03/10/2017 00:39

I had a crushed velvet bodysuit in the 90s, with hook and eye fasteners that got stuck in my pubic hair. I can't even look at these damned settees.

itshappening · 03/10/2017 00:54

I think as long as a house is authentic and the decor seems to suit the person who chose it, that is good.

Although as a renter in a very expensive city I don't get much choice, you take whatever comes up when you are looking that isn't as dire as the others, and learn to live with the bits you don't like.

Solo · 03/10/2017 01:00

TheFirstMrsDV can I ask whaqt kind of paint you did use on your fence panels please?

haveacupoftea · 03/10/2017 01:08

These wall stickers with this phrase should be banned from sale.

My current hate are the prints which say "Inhale, exhale".

I suppose they're useful just in case someone forgets to FUCKING BREATHE.

2017SoFarSoGood · 03/10/2017 01:57

I am very sad that today I did not buy a house with every room painted the same gray (white woodwork and ceilings) and metro tiled bathroom.

Of course I would have repainted it but the bathroom was beautiful!

Too bad I'm too stingy to offer 100k over the asking price. Bloody house. Blush

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 03/10/2017 04:21

I'm sniggering hard at the idea that my bookshelves, in particular, are in any way pretentious. I have shelves and shelves and bookcases and bookcases full of books. I have a LOT of books. Most shelves are double-loaded as well. The ones that most frequently get re-read are at the front. Reference books are at the top. I wouldn't get rid of any of them - unless they were truly shite (happens sometimes).

Pretentious bookshelves would be ones that have pristine classics that no one has ever bent the spine on (i.e. actually read), artfully arranged.

Saffronwblue · 03/10/2017 05:33

Thought I would share this house. Inner city Melbourne (you can see nice cottages on each side). Ticks many boxes in regards to grey, concrete, hard edges etc.

Saffronwblue · 03/10/2017 05:43

It is worth scrolling through to the rather surprising toilet decor.

JanKind · 03/10/2017 06:01

I hate. Rushed velvet anything including clothes so untidy

Garlicansapphire · 03/10/2017 06:29

Oh dear I just ordered a midnight velvet (not crushed) corner sofa from loaf.... And I have a feature wall of wallpaper but its a beautiful and very pretty scandinavian print - pale blue and white. No twigs or statements on walls. Hundreds of books but they are tucked away in my study.

Can anyone advise on carpets though? I need to replace my stair, landing and bedroom carpets. Had then 16 years - they were creamy now horribly stained and wrinkled after years of messy kids. I was thinking of grey but I live in an edwardian house with quite dark landing etc and worried it would be very deadening. But I dont want something that will show the stains.

I also want to re-do my bathroom. Ideas for nice tiles? I quite like the trend for those patterned floor tiles but worried they will date badly...

TheFirstMrsDV · 03/10/2017 07:06

Solo I used whatever I had. All would have been emulsion because I hate using gloss type paints. One year I use some Next garden paint and it was rubbish so I didn't bother again
I last repainted about two years ago and I was checking the panels yesterday.
Some have weathered more than others but they are holding up really well.
I will need to do a couple again but will probably wait until the spring.

I know Valspar are doing a range of bright garden paints but I haven't used them
I have used their masonry paint for various garden projects (planters etc) and that holds up well. You can use it on wood too.

BikeRunSki · 03/10/2017 07:28

My dad used to judge people on their bookshelves. The longer and fuller and better! An underlying order, but with books out/not properly away because they'd been used was his ideal. I grew up in a house with floor to ceiling bookshelves, full to bursting, in practically every room.

Ishouldbedoingsomething · 03/10/2017 07:29

I am just about to order 2 pale grey velvet sofas (sofa.com - anyone bought from them - are they any good?)

Going for grey as I like changing cushions etc when I am bored and it’s easier to do than replacing the sofas. I know emerald green / cobalt blue are in but don’t think it would fit In with all our other furniture and don’t want to replace everything

Coffeeelover · 03/10/2017 07:33

Chevrons......I fucking hate chevrons, especially yellow and grey!

echt · 03/10/2017 07:36

Oh dear, Saffron. Apart from ticking all the boxes on blah decor, the bedrooms are so small by Aussie standards. But I can see they've squeezed four bedrooms in. You could set up home in the garage, though.

DappledThings · 03/10/2017 07:57

greentea then they are a trend that won't die! Any recent renovation I've seen has the wretched things on all walls and floor and up the side of the bath. Hate them.

ShotsFired · 03/10/2017 07:58

@AJPTaylor and all that Not on the High Street personalised shite. Really who needs a wall print reminding them of their Surname? The Jones-Smith Family Est 2013.

I saw someone's kitchen which was perfectly normal. Then there was a photo of their dining table and they'd stencilled that sort of nonsense on top of it.

Trills · 03/10/2017 08:09

Chevrons?

As in, keep apart two chevrons on the road?

Not sure I can imagine how to incorporate that into home decor.

Pagwatch · 03/10/2017 08:27

BornFreeInBiscuits

Grin It's really not a problem

I actually love that bathroom. It's the kids room and the dark colours make it cosy. It's neautral because it's for a boy and a girl and I want it too look really neat and uncluttered . I put in really good storage because DD does swimming 6 times a week and I need a huge number of towels at hand.
The room is right at the back of the house and gets hardly any light. We've had brighter colours before and it made them look forlorn. I just embraced it and, in real life, it works. The kids love it.
My other rooms mostly feature really strong colours which I love because it's a big house and it can take it.

perhapsiwill · 03/10/2017 08:27

Laminate flooring
Decking
Sparkly worktops
Plinth lights (especially coloured ones)
Large flowered wallpaper
Fairy lights everywhere

MadamMinacious · 03/10/2017 08:32

Didn#'t we have this same thread a few weeks ago? Discussing glitter, grey, wall phrases - all the same things? An almost identical thread? Didn't we or am I going mad?

Hellsbells35 · 03/10/2017 08:53

I like that someone mentioned their aversion to plantation shutters. My husband HATES them. I think they make houses too dark inside and are unneeded. I also don't like it when people go without anything and make a point of looking in their house as I walk by. Bring back the net curtain!

DaisyDrip · 03/10/2017 09:10

I live in a bungalow and my bedroom is at the front. I'm a private person and my bedroom is my sanctuary, I hate the thought of anyone seeing in my room. I'm thinking of putting up plantation shutters to enable me to keep my privacy.

My home is very 'me'. Neutral colours but added accents. Not a lot of ornaments as I like the minimalist look but not the bare look - if that makes sense. I have lamps and candles all over, I never use the main lighting. I have laminate, leather sofa's, voile and crystal. I love my little bolt hole, it's comfy, cosy and as I live alone it's all my own choice.

My late husband loved big chunky furniture, yes, very comfy but not what I liked. He would always decorated to my taste though, so compromise won the day.

I remember years ago we had a racing green kitchen, it was all the rage back then and I loved it. my kitchen now is oak but all black appliances and accessories.

Cushions are my bugbear, I love them and have lots, my dogs throw them on the floor. Confused
