To hate these current home trends...

Crushed velvet sofas/beds/curtains.

Also wooden letters in the kitchen/bathroom that's say 'Cook'/'Bath' etc telling you what each room is for.

While I'm at it- wall 'art' (stickers) with cheesy phrases.

I hate those "cook", "eat", "bathe" whatever signs. I read them and think "no, I won't" (belligerent sod that I am), and get the urge to rearrange them and put "sleep" in the bathroom.

  • apart from grey walls, which can actually be pretty nice.

@ShirleyPhallus Agreed! I looked at a house once that had the lyrics to 'Chasing cars' above the bed. I couldn't see past it to be honest.

Grey everything.

I love grey, it's my favourite colour but too much grey and silver with NO other colour to break it up is awful. (In my opinion anyway)

I love open plan though, our house is open plan downstairs and I'm buggered if I'm going to start putting doors everywhere.

Different strokes and all that, I guess.

I personally took the "word" wall-art trend to its natural conclusion, and have a framed picture of the word "SHIT" above my toilet.

InspMorse you should've started with a trigger warning Grin

I've always hated open plan, but I assume that's because I hate any noise other than the person speaking to me, or music I've chosen to listen to. I'm a very hard person to live with don't speak to me about galumphing boys and wooden floorboards

@ipswichwitch I'm the same! I wonder if the manufacturers would ever make a 'shag' for the bedroom Hmm

Shiny black kitchens. Black cupboards, black surfaces, black drawers.

When we were house hunting every new build had a black kitchen.

IHate sorry. I bet there are load of people who are perfectly nice with lots of what's been mentioned here.

I think it's just fashion and styles change. Wall art stickers started at least ten years ago. Remember feature walls with patterned wallpaper? Looks really dated when I see them on property websites but I had one once and loved it!

grey

I've just spent the better part of today re-painting the gates and fence of my house, which were painted dull blue-grey when I bought it. As a buyer-attracting measure.

This is Australia, for fuck's sake. The piercing sunlight begs for something brighter. Nooooo. Most houses are painted as if they were part of the D-Day landings plans.

Thanks to the ridiculous cost of paint here, I've only been able to up-green the grey, which sort of fits in with the foliage of the trees, which are not a true green.

Sorry. Off-topic.

I agree with most of these except the twiggy heart.
I ❤ hearts.
And a wee bit grey. I have to. I'm Scottish. It's the default colour of our sky.

I can't get worked up about how other people decorate their homes.

The crushed velvet isn't to my tastes but my grandma has always wanted one. My grandad hated them. So as he has now died and she is decorating to just her own tastes, I'm really glad the trend meant she could easily find one. And she loves it!

I do love a bit of crushed velvet though. But yeah those words are odd, although DS1 is showing a disturbing desire for them every time we see them. I'm running out of excuses not to but them.

Keep meaning to ask, are plantation shutters a thing in the UK? They've been everywhere here, and I'd love them on a plantation estate, or Tuscan farmhouse...but every other 60's house in the street, and all the new builds have them.

I don't like grey walls. It's such a depressing and oppressive colour but it seems to be really 'on trend' right now.

Also anything with 'Live, Laugh, Love' on.

Are you onthe MN-recommended DIY Top Tips On A Budget FB page.

There are people ruining lovely furniture every single hour and you can almost set your watch by the fads.

And the worst part is that they are all these nasty cheap fixes which probably cost more than doing a decent job (e.g. putting bloody fablon on your worktops which is going to peel up and be fucked the second something hot goes on it).

I have a plaque in my kitchen saying "It's the most wonderful time of the year". It went up last Christmas and hasn't been down since.
