I don't normally watch The One Show on BBC - but Hillary Clinton is currently on the studio sofa. (Promoting book and talking about Trump)

cozietoesie · 13/10/2017 19:18

When I think that people used to laugh at Dubya for his gaffes. Goodness, the man was a positive Demosthenes in comparison.........

Fekko · 13/10/2017 19:40

I'm even getting nostalgic for Reagan.

cozietoesie · 13/10/2017 21:21

At least with Reagan - by the end of his second term - you knew that he was up in the Residence watching cowboy movies and not doing much else.

AcrossthePond55 · 13/10/2017 22:23

Me too, cozie.

But the jury's still out on Reagan, Fekko. Reagan and his cronies brought in a lot of 'Trump-like' policies and legislation but without the 'in your face' and over the top ego-ism and bullying of Scrotus. Reagan was the one who brought in 'supply side' and 'trickle down' economics. He also was the one who, in a more subtle way, promoted 'greed is good' and 'poor equals lazy', although he wasn't without some human-kindness when it came right down to helping others. But it seemed more of a 'noblesse oblige' rather than 'we're all in this together' which can be hurtful and unnecessarily shaming to those in need. What's happened since then has come from those foundations and is reaching its apogee with Scrotus & Co. They don't even feel the need to appear caring, at least Reagan did that much!

Many people talking, with much agreement, on my Iran speech today. Participants in the deal are making lots of money on trade with Iran!

Starting to develop a much better relationship with Pakistan and its leaders. I want to thank them for their cooperation on many fronts.

TheClaws · 14/10/2017 02:46

There are a few boring tweets about healthcare - Obamacare is dying, Dems must make deal, blah blah blah - we’ve seen those before so I won’t bother copying. This one is a bit vomitous.

Such a wonderful statement from the great @LouDobbs. "We take up what may be the most accomplished presidency in modern American history."

  1. THREAD: Appears Trump’s Iran plan Is an odd nothing-burger that will do little. But the process he employed was incredibly damaging
  1. The centerpiece is that he won’t certify and ask Congress to pass new conditions under which sanctions would automatically be reimposed
  2. But he doesn’t need Congressional action to reimpose sanctions. He can do it anytime himself
  3. And he doesn’t need Congress to announce the triggers he can just lay out these redlines & do it himself whenever
  4. This is basically a remarkable deferral of executive power to Congress
  5. And even the actions against the IRGC aren’t all that dramatic despite the rhetoric
  6. So basically he manufactured a huge crisis but now seems to be walking away having done little
  7. This will still have very negative effects for us internationally
  8. To our European allies he has shown how unreliable he is putting a deal they care about in jeopardy
10. To Iran, North Korea, and other adversaries he has shown once again he’s all bluster no action 11. The Israelis & Saudis are likely to be underwhelmed/disappointed with this outcome after all the hype 12. But for all of that, he’s still managed to shake everyone’s confidence in the agreement and destabilize it 13. And if Congress does pass this legislation his or any future President’s hands will be tied 14. Making it less likely that we can actually get to a future agreement on extending the sunsets 15. & why did we have to go through all of this? 16. Because a petulant POTUS can’t just sign a certification every 90 days giving his predecessor a little credit 17. What a mess / END

After learning that Priebus was interviewed by Mueller’s team today it’s now clear why Trump invited him to eat lunch with him last week.

[speculative, but on the nose I reckon]

Google, Facebook putting an early mark on political advertising bills

www.politico.com/story/2017/10/13/google-facebook-political-advertising-bills-243764

Google and Facebook are looking to make an early imprint on legislation being drafted in the House and Senate that would force them and other online networks to disclose information about the buyers of political ads.

Lobbyists from the Silicon Valley behemoths have met with the staffs of Sens. Mark Warner and Amy Klobuchar and Rep. Derek Kilmer, all of whom are drawing up bills that would impose new regulations on the industry, according to Democratic aides and company representatives. The Senate bill is expected to be formally introduced next week. It is not clear when the House legislation, which has not been previously reported, will be introduced.

DC judge just heard args on whether Facebook users should be allowed to challenge search warrants for their accounts. No ruling today.

Some interesting takeaways from today's hearing on whether Facebook users can intervene to challenge search warrants for their accounts 1/10
The government's position, as articulated in court, is that Facebook users have no right to challenge search warrants in advance 2/10

The judge seemed concerned about what this would mean for third parties whose communications/identifying info could be swept up 3/10
The judge seemed open to placing some limits on the government's access to the Facebook accounts, but not to toss the warrants outright 4/10
The judge also wants Facebook to explain just how much it can tailor a production of user account records to the government 5/10
That is, beyond limiting records based on date ranges, can Facebook apply other criteria to narrow info produced to the govt 6/10
This matters b/c if Facebook can narrow initial production to weed out protected/irrelevant info, that goes to challengers' concerns 7/10
Prosecutor offered some insight into what gov't might be looking for, incl. posts people liked, friend connections, photos from Jan. 20 8/10
Great quip from the judge, during exchange about the 4th Amendment: "With all due respect, the Framers weren't anticipating Facebook." 9/10
The Facebook dispute is related to the mass arrests for alleged rioting in DC during Trump's inauguration. Trials set to start in Nov. 10/10

GOP lawmaker drafts bill requiring journalists to register with police

thehill.com/homenews/house/355272-gop-lawmaker-drafts-bill-requiring-journalists-to-register-with-police?amp

Indiana State Rep. Jim Lucas has drafted legislation that would require professional journalists to be licensed by police.

The Republican lawmaker is taking aim at journalists for what he says is "irresponsible" coverage, proposing that they are fingerprinted and licensed to practice.

"If you're OK licensing my Second Amendment right, what's wrong with licensing your First Amendment right?" he said, according to the Indy Star.

But Lucas said the bill is really about gun rights - Lucas has tried unsuccessfully to repeal an Indiana law that requires a permit to carry a handgun.

The journalist licensing bill, which he said he may file to make a point, is almost identical to the handgun bill. He has been harshly critical of the media's coverage of the handgun bill.

"If I was as irresponsible with my handgun as the media has been with their keyboard, I'd probably be in jail," he said. "Why wouldn't I push for it? If one constitutional right is OK to license, then they all are."

Lucas's draft legislation comes the same week that President Trump has threatened to revoke the licenses of news networks for unflattering coverage, but Lucas said he originally drafted the bill last year.

"I'm a year ahead of President Trump on this," he said.

Can you call them gaffes when they’re so ridiculous?

During a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing Thursday, Energy Secretary Rick Perry mistakenly referred to Puerto Rico as a country while talking about how to repair its energy grid.

And then trump, whilst speaking at the values voters summit:

"In the last 10 months we have followed through on one promise after another," Trump said. "I didn't have a schedule, [but] if I did have a schedule, I would say we are substantially ahead of schedule."
