FBI Document Cache Sheds Light On Inner Workings Of Russia’s U.S. News (And Propaganda) Network

m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_59e1113fe4b04d1d5181b0ad/amp?ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000016&section=politics

The 103-page handbook for publications of Sputnik’s Kremlin-owned parent company, Rossiya Segodnya, made it clear that traditional journalistic neutrality was not the company’s mandate. Instead, Sputnik reporters were told they should provide readers “with a Russian viewpoint” on issues and “maintain allegiance” to the country.

“Our main goal is to inform the international audience about Russia’s political, economic and ideological stance on both local and global issues,” the guide reads. “To this end, we must always strive to be objective but we must also stay true to the national interest of the Russian Federation.”

The guide, which was written in English, is included among more than 10,000 internal Sputnik messages on a thumb drive that Feinberg provided to the FBI, which is investigating the agency for possible violations of the law that requires agents of foreign nations to register with the Justice Department. The guide appears to contradict repeated claims by Sputnik executives that they follow traditional journalistic standards and operate independently of the Kremlin and are dedicated to objective reporting. For example, in August, when Sputnik opened a headquarters in Scotland, Sputnik editor and director Nikolai Gorshkov told a local news agency, “No one has ever called me from Moscow.”

Roger Stone attorney says he complied with request for Assange contact

amp.cnn.com/cnn/2017/10/13/politics/roger-stone-julian-assange-contact-house-intelligence-committee-russia/index.html

(CNN) An attorney for Roger Stone says the longtime confidante to President Donald Trump has complied with the House Russia investigators' request for him to provide the identity of his intermediary to WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange.

But Stone's attorney, Grant Smith, would not say whether that meant Stone had in fact revealed the identity of his WikiLeaks go-between to the House intelligence committee.

"Mr. Stone has complied with the committee's requests. No further statement will be issued," Smith said, declining to answer any additional questions.

Tiny bit of good news. Maybe trump isn’t even winning the culture war, although I don’t have much confidence in the nfl owners coming up with a palatable solution

NFL not seeking mandate for players to stand during anthem

ca.reuters.com/article/canadaSportsNews/idCAKBN1CI24Y-OCASP

(Reuters) - The NFL said on Friday it has no plans to mandate players stand for the U.S. national anthem, but will rather present a possible solution on how to end the controversial protests when it meets with team owners next week.

Commissioner Roger Goodell, along with the head of the NFL Players Association, will meet with the owners from Oct. 17-18 in New York where the issue of player protests during the U.S. national anthem is expected to command much attention.

“(Goodell) has a plan that he is going to present to owners about how to use our platform to both raise awareness and make progress on issues of social justice and equality in this country,” NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart said on a conference call.

“What we don’t have is a proposal that changes our policy, we don’t have something that mandates anything. That’s clear. If that was the case I doubt the head of the NFLPA would have put a joint statement out with us.”

And even better news:

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher's race moved to 'toss-up' amid Russia investigation entanglements

www.latimes.com/politics/essential/la-pol-ca-essential-politics-updates-political-analysts-shift-two-california-1507908967-htmlstory.html

Saying the actions of the Republican incumbents have put their seats in danger, the nonpartisan Cook Political Report shifted its ratings of the election contests in two Southern California districts toward Democrats on Friday.

Though the general election is 13 months away, potential challengers and donors take a long look at such ratings when they are deciding where to spend their money.

Nine California Republican-held congressional districts are being closely watched as Democrats try to secure the seats they need to win back the House in the 2018 midterms.

Most surprising is the move in the 48th Congressional District, represented by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher of Costa Mesa, from "lean Republican" to "toss-up."

Cook political analyst David Wasserman called the seat one of Democrats' best pick-up opportunities in California, saying Rohrabacher may have had a long career, but "his recent sympathetic comments towards Russia and strange interactions with Julian Assange and internet conspiracy theorist Chuck Johnson could amount to self-sabotage in a district President Trump narrowly lost."

In August, Rohrabacher met with Assange, who founded WikiLeaks, and said Assange assured him that Russia did not steal emails from the Democratic National Committee. Rohrabacher has said he's been denied a meeting with Trump to discuss asylum for Assange in exchange for the information he heard.

Rohrabacher, who has picked up quite a few challengers, is ranked No. 4 on The Times' list of toughest races.

Other Southern California Republicans in the toss-up category are Reps. Steve Knight of Palmdale and Darrell Issa of Vista.

Cook on Friday also moved Rep. Duncan Hunter's 50th Congressional District to "solid Republican" from "likely Republican," a minor shift that signals Wasserman still believes Hunter of Alpine will win but that he's on shakier ground.

Wasserman pointed to an ongoing FBI investigation into allegations Hunter's campaign spent contributions for his family's personal use, saying "it would take the combination of a Democratic wave and an indicted GOP incumbent to put a seat as Republican as this one anywhere near the competitive radar, but that may be where things are headed."

Thanks for the links, Pain. (Et al.)

WishfulThanking · 14/10/2017 13:33

Urrgh, I've just realised one day Trump's face could be on their dollar bills.

WishfulThanking · 14/10/2017 13:35

I'm just about to settle down with the latest issue of the Economist. On their cover they name the Chinese president as the most powerful man in the world as they reckon Trump has lost that title. I thought it was meant to be Putin? Anyway, a world controlled by billionaires. I suppose it was always going to be the case.

WishfulThanking · 14/10/2017 13:37

I don't actually know if Xi Jingping is a billionaire or not. I was talking about the other two.

Lweji · 14/10/2017 15:01

Xi is more likely to be a billionaire than Trump, I reckon .

cozietoesie · 14/10/2017 16:28

Doing the keynote at Davos was clever.

'He is failing': Trump strikes out solo as friends worry and enemies circle

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/oct/14/donald-trump-iran-healthcare-white-house-corker

"McMullin agreed that Trump seemed rattled by the recent criticisms from Tillerson, Corker and Barrack. “He probably understands their remarks represent a new stage of acceptance setting in across the country, even among his supporters, that he is unfit and incapable."

lionheart · 14/10/2017 21:02

Larry Flynt and Hustler? Hmm

AcrossthePond55 · 14/10/2017 21:21

Flynt's been known to make offers of this type. It's all about the PR. But in this case, I hope someone takes him up on it!

Hmm, how much would those of us regularly on these threads get each if we really started digging?

TheNorthWestPawsage · 14/10/2017 21:24

Yes that's what I thought! (And a few dollars would come in quite handy for most of us I expect Grin)
