The pet insurance tweet is ridiculous - people in Puerto Rico are literally dying (Maddow stated two nights ago that despite the US Comfort having the capacity to treat 800 people, a grand total of 7 are actually being treated) but clearly pet insurance is the priority.

TheClaws I'm not sure if it's entirely them being Fox in this instance - the other article I saw about this near enough said the same thing, although in a less sensationalist way I suppose!

This was from a few days ago and I don't think has been posted on this thread, although apols if I've missed it

Kaspersky inks threat intel sharing agreement with Interpol

thehill.com/business-a-lobbying/355095-kaspersky-inks-threat-intel-sharing-agreement-with-interpol

Kaspersky Lab, a cybersecurity firm facing intense scrutiny in the United States, announced a new threat-sharing agreement with Interpol on Thursday.

“INTERPOL’s new agreement with Kaspersky Lab is an additional step in our continued efforts to ensure law enforcement worldwide has access to the information they need to combat cyberthreats,” said Noboru Nakatani, executive director of the Interpol's Global Complex for Innovation.

“We have seen how cooperation with the private sector is essential in effectively tackling this global phenomenon which continues to grow in scale and complexity.”

A recent spate of news stories has suggested Russian intelligence leveraged Kaspersky Lab antivirus software's ability to scan files to search for documents and source code related to United States intelligence operations.

This included a New York Times report that Israeli intelligence officials hacked into Kaspersky Lab's systems, where they witnessed Russian agents acting against the U.S. in real time.

Those reports follow the Department of Homeland Security barring federal agencies from using Kaspersky products this September.

At a conference earlier this weak, Nakatani said Interpol had received no intelligence from the United States to suggest that Kaspersky was a threat.

Twitter deleted data potentially crucial to Russia probes

Social-media platform’s strict privacy policy led to deletions of Russian information of interest to investigators.

www.politico.com/story/2017/10/13/twitter-russia-data-deleted-investigation-243730

Twitter has deleted tweets and other user data of potentially irreplaceable value to investigators probing Russia’s suspected manipulation of the social media platform during the 2016 election, according to current and former government cybersecurity officials.

Federal investigators now believe Twitter was one of Russia’s most potent weapons in its efforts to promote Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton, the officials say, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

[...]Many U.S. investigators believe that their best hope for identifying who was behind these operations, how they collaborated with each other and their suspected links to the Kremlin lies buried within the mountains of data accumulated in recent years by Twitter

By analyzing Twitter data over time, investigators could establish what one U.S. government cybersecurity consultant described as “pattern of life behavior,” determining when Russian influence operations began, and how they “were trying to nudge the narrative in a certain direction.”

“So if you have access to all this, you can basically see when botnets appeared and disappeared, and how they shaped narrative around certain events,” said the analyst, who could not speak for attribution given company policy.

But a substantial amount of valuable information held by Twitter is lost for good, according to the cybersecurity analysts and other current and former U.S. officials.

One reason is Twitter’s aggressively pro-consumer privacy policies, which generally dictate that once any user revises or deletes their tweets, paid promotions or entire accounts, the company itself must do so as well. Twitter policy requires similar actions by private companies that pay for access to its real-time global data stream and repository of saved data for use in marketing and other commercial analysis.

The other reason is that Russian cyber tradecraft dictates that operatives immediately erase all of their digital breadcrumbs, according to former FBI Executive Assistant Director Robert Anderson and others familiar with Russian influence operations.

Thomas Rid, a Strategic Studies professor at Johns Hopkins University, blamed Twitter for making it easy for Russia and other bad actors to hijack its platform by failing to crack down on suspicious activity, and by then allowing them to cover their tracks simply by hitting the delete key.

Flynn ally sought help from 'dark web' in covert Clinton email investigation

Barbara Ledeen, a staffer on the committee looking into Trump’s Russia ties and a friend of Mike Flynn, tried to launch her own investigation into Clinton’s emails

A close associate of Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn arranged a covert investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server when she was secretary of state, and through intermediaries turned to a person with knowledge of the “dark web” for help.

Pentagon accidentally included reporter in Puerto Rico spin talks

thehill.com/homenews/media/355295-pentagon-accidentally-included-reporter-in-puerto-rico-spin-talks?amp

Officials at the Department of Defense and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) accidentally included a Bloomberg climate reporter on an internal email distribution list that included discussions on how to present Puerto Rico recovery efforts to the media.

Bloomberg's Christopher Flavelle said he repeatedly alerted officials at the Pentagon to the error but kept receiving emails for five days.

"Those messages, each of which was marked 'unclassified,' offer a glimpse into the federal government's struggle to convince the public that the response effort was going well. That struggle was compounded by the commander-in-chief, and eased only when public attention was pulled to a very different disaster," writes Flavelle in a Bloomberg story published Friday.

The reporter goes on to share portions of the emails that were sent between Sept. 28 and Oct. 2, which mainly focus on President Trump's war of words with San Juan Mayor Carmen Yul n Cruz over Hurricane Maria recovery efforts.

Oh My GOD!! Even Dubya never made this many verbal gaffes! Or told as many bald-faced lies, for that matter. It's a sorry day when I find myself praising Dubya, but compared to Trump, Dubya is a prince!

I couldn't watch the Iran thingy. I've had a crashing headache all day (thanks, fires) and between the frustration and DH shouting at the TV it would have been more than I could stand.

I'm liking the response from the EU on Scrotus thinking he's all powerful:

Within minutes, EU's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini insisted the deal was "robust" and that there had been "no violations of any of the commitments in the agreement"

She said it was not in the power of "any president in the world" to terminate the agreement, which had been established by a UN Security Council resolution

cozietoesie · 13/10/2017 19:01

I find myself looking back on Dubya with increasing fondness, Across.
