If the UK is so bad why doesn't everyone get up and go and work in Europe while they can, why stay here?

Ah, that old chestnut. Nope, nobody has to leave the country they have always lived in and are settled in with their families because they disagree with a self-harming decision their government has made. Citizens of a democracy have every right to protest.

The only people who may end up leaving (or have already left) are the EU citizens who live here and who are being treated disgracefully. Of course, many of them are doctors, nurses, teachers etc and as a group they make a net contribution to our economy so that will leave us even worse off.

Good to see a brexit goady thread, I had thought that after the last one people had actually matured.

All I'm saying if you don't like the UK and the way it's going why stay? Instead of moaning just get up and go.

EU money is responsible for a lot of regeneration in the north east, Wales & Cornwall. Also a lot of what we paid in we got back in rebates.

The British government would have been aware of the monetary consequences of leaving the EU and just chose not to publicise it.

All this is ok though because "we got our country back"

Have you still not grasped the fact that this very attitude pissed off so many people that it impacted the outcome to your detriment? Get down off your high horse - you opinion has no greater value than anyone else's at the polling station.

I say this as a Londoner and Remainer who is v pissed off that your inability to debate in a civilised fashion without resulting to insults has contributed to our current awful predicament.

Wow. You sound extremely angry and totally pissed off.

As a Londoner (dunno what that has to do with the price of fish) and a remainer, surely you are pleased with this shit show of a country.

You are an intelligent being. Did you not forsee this happening?

What were your reasons for remaining?

Let's have a civil debate.

OP you seem to be forgetting that political ideas that were held by looney tunes right wingers a few years ago are now mainstream and normalized and that questioning them makes you an evil anti democrat because a couple of percent more people said so.. Hmm (check out the BNP manifesto from the early 00s. Tory policy is now almost identical.)

You know that's one of the poorest arguments that is trotted out don't you?

I'm sure my Dad didn't like fighting in Ww2 so should he have just left the army? Why shouldn't we be patriotic and fight to save our country? It's called democracy. (Or do you only like tye brexiter version of democracy where those that disagree are told to shut up - although I think that's called a dictatorship). Do you never worry that you might be wrong and maybe brexit is going to irreparably damage the UK? Do you not think people should stand up for what they believe in if it makes you uncomfortable?
And if you weren't uncomfortable you wouldn't be using such a crap argument.

No idea how else to say it, but this is such a non-story its quite incredible; we have been paying this for years and we will continue to pay it until we leave.

This.

We pay that money anyway; we’ve paid that money for years; we will pay that money for as long as we signed up to pay it for at the last EU budget decision.

Do you start a thread every year to express outrage at how much we pay to the EU?

Brexit is just disaster capitalism.
Basically you create or exploit a 'disaster' often by calling another institution undemocratic or corrupt, to create opportunities to change the state (by undemocratic means) and privatise and therefore monetarise what you can (get away with). It often includes exploiting lesser markets (like commonwealth states for instance) in order to exploit them for your gain under the guise of helping them.... (Read Naomi Klein or read How Corrupt is Britain or read Austerity)
So no I'm not going to get behind it.

Everyone has their views on the good, the bad, and the ugly about Brexit. There are experts flying about on both sides. People voted. The result went the way of brexit. We must move on. There are lots of other issues to worry about.

'Instead of moaning just get up and go?'
Go where? DH and I have jobs here. We have a house here. We have 3 children including one who is doing A levels next year. Our family are here. Do you really think it's that simple? And after we leave the EU, we can't 'just go' and live in another EU country. What a stupid argument.

If people wanted Brexit to go away then there should have been a resounding REMAIN vote. Instead they voted for the Saga that keeps on giving & won't really be sort of done with for about 30 yrs. Woohoo. I might be dead by then.

Well salaries haven't gone up in 25 years have they. Membership of EU or not. My friend is earning £7.90 as a carer. Funny how everything is going up except wages. There was a report in the week that most middle class jobs will disappear in 10 years time because people will not be needed. Big companies already have plans in place to replace staff. All the people with dual nationality don't slam the door on your way out.

There should at the very least be a plan. Some sort of way forward.

I think the reality is that if you tried to make a plan, you would have to admit we made a terrible mistake.

This was always going to be the messiest of messy divorces, and will take years to finalize, so no surprise or disappointment so far.
Anyone who has been through divorce must have had times when they wondered if it was worth it - many knew full well that they would take a big hit financially, and their future post divorce was totally unknown, but they still wanted the unknown over the known......

Funny how anyone who doesn't want brexit is told to leave the country but there wasn't ever a mass exodus of brexiters who spent years moaning that we were in the EU. They could have left for a non EU country at any time but strangely didn't.

Yes, because it's less than the £17 billion that we've been paying up until now. We receive a small rebate but we are already saving money on our net contribution.

But Hollie, working on the much trotted out observation that Brexiter are parochial, thick & less educated, and EU & remainers have a clutch of degrees & are the cosmopolitan movers & shakers of Britain & citizens of everywhere - surely you’ve answered your own question?

How can anyone deny Brexit won't be a disaster for this country??

the big disaster is the uncertainty and the slow pace of negotiations by a government that can't figure out what it wants. given that the population is split pretty badly, that's not surprising.

the exit bill ends. after that no more payments.

We are still in the EU so continuing to pay. Even if we weren't I would've happy to pay for the privilege of not being subservient to the European courts and legislators.
