Urmmm.... ?? WTF are you talking about? We haven't left the EU yet.... Why would food prices being noticeably higher (higher than when??) You do realise food prices are hiked every year?? I cannot ever remember when it was cheap to travel to France....

I'l explain it to you..

When the pound is devalued against other currencies the retailers need to recoup the difference from the consumer. For example, my sister works in publishing and they have had to increase their book prices by 10% so the consumer bears the cost in the last 12 months. The same is happening with supermarkets. The company does not want to absorb the loss so it is passed to the consumer.

Whizbang · 21/09/2017 23:36

Oh FFS. Just typed long reply then deleted due to iPhone fuckwittedness!

To summarise...SSD, Rufus et al - hahahaha! Your sneering condescension towards those using the term 'liberal elite' and calling out the behaviours is hilarious.

Have you still not grasped the fact that this very attitude pissed off so many people that it impacted the outcome to your detriment? Get down off your high horse - you opinion has no greater value than anyone else's at the polling station.

I say this as a Londoner and Remainer who is v pissed off that your inability to debate in a civilised fashion without resulting to insults has contributed to our current awful predicament.

Or perhaps you were being ironic, in which case my bad.

I'm always so sad no one got a postcard from Britain when it went away - possibly due to inferior forrin post.
Now the Brits have got their country back which exotic holiday destinations will the postcards come from? Bognor?

Oh bless, the naivity would be cute if it wasn't so widespread and therefore depressing.

pambeesley · 21/09/2017 23:42

Yep fine with it. Thanks for asking

Soo ....we have had price hikes at least twice a year, since time immemorial, because..... What?? Brexit??

PurpleTango · 21/09/2017 23:46

Go on...explain why there has always been 2 price hikes per year but only now its become an issue....

existentialmoment · 21/09/2017 23:52

God no, I can't think of words small enough and all the explaining would take forever. And you'd still be lost.

Yea.... Nothing at all to do with you talking bollox 😂

Price hikes are not the same as a currency devaluation.

Price hikes relate to iinflation. Currency devaluation is a totally separate thing.

PebblesFlintstone · 21/09/2017 23:59

It shouldn't need explaining that when the pound is worth considerably less than it was a year ago, you get less imported goods for your money when paying for them in other currencies! We are so reliant on imported foodstuffs that supermarket shops are inevitably more expensive unless you are happy to live off turnips and cabbage. There may well be additional price rises due to other factors but it is impossible to argue that food hasn't got more expensive directly as a result of the Brexit vote.

SerfTerf · 22/09/2017 00:00

I though Brexit threads has their own topic cupboard now? #referendumfatigue

LondonNicki · 22/09/2017 00:06

But we can't be 'fatigued' about this issue. It's too important and affects us all.

Bejazzled · 22/09/2017 00:11

It's not a surprise tbh. Did some people think it would be completely free?

PebblesFlintstone · 22/09/2017 00:11

Sadly, I think this is the attitude of most of the population. "It'll all be fine, everything will work out in the end." So people don't pay much attention.

That's why the government can get away with things like the hideously undemocratic Repeal Bill. I don't know what it will take to make people really sit up and smell the coffee.

I think that in many ways the day I woke up and heard about BREXIT as one of the worse days of my life

Night all

SylviaPoe · 22/09/2017 00:21

'The whole ethos in my school is about getting children to cope with change and developing resilience.'

I know this is off topic, but how is your school going about getting children to develop resilience?

LondonNicki · 22/09/2017 00:23

I hear you. One of the most incredible acts of self sabotage Ive ever witnessed! It won't end well.

SerfTerf · 22/09/2017 00:24

If I thought MN discussion would make the slightest difference, I'd be discussing the posterior off of it.

KC225 · 22/09/2017 00:27

If the EU is so bloody great then why are they making it so difficult and expensive to leave.

Anotheroneofthese · 22/09/2017 00:29

The UK is leaving the Union. The leave vote won. We need to move on. The endless attempts to undermine the results are irritating and this is from someone who voted to remain.

Personally, I am more worried about the many people who think it is okay to undermine democracy than I am about Brexit. Without a doubt, this continued, irritating efforts to undermine the results is frightening and sets a terrible precedence and culture. I can't be part of that.

If another referendum was called, I would vote leave only because I would be driven to ensure democracy wins. I suspect most people think like me and understand what is at stake. Democracy must never be undermined for short term gains of lobby groups or individuals.

Anotheroneofthese · 22/09/2017 00:36

The behaviour of the EU would also push me to vote leave. I really cannot bear the bullying tactics.

Never take the silence of the majority as support for your views.

The behaviour of the EU plus the constant talking about undermining Brexit will only strengthen the resolve of Brexiteers because these things prove the very points they were making - EU is a bullying and disloyalty to Britain by many living here.

Somerville · 22/09/2017 00:40

If the EU is so bloody great then why are they making it so difficult and expensive to leave.

Confused They're defending the interests of their members. Since the UK (well, England and Wales) don't want membership anymore, the EU can hardly be blamed for no longer protecting our interests.

Though, notably, the EU are currently placing a much higher priority on protecting the hardwon peace and relative prosperity of (remain voting) NI than the government. Which looks bloody great to those of us who remember the civil war within our borders.

itsawonderfulworld · 22/09/2017 00:41

Sigh. The Institute of Fiscal Studies has made it clear that instead of having £350M/week MORE to spend on the NHS and other public services, there will in fact be £300M/week LESS available after Brexit, due to loss of growth and tax revenues. Not just for a couple of years either - for good.
This is also the current government's official position as they've acknowledge it in their budget.
In just one year we've gone from the fastest growing economy in the EU to the slowest. And Brexit hasn't even happened yet.

And yes, we'll continue paying for access to the Single Market. Because British businesses (you know, the ones that provide employment and taxes) just couldn't survive otherwise.

But hey, no matter how painful it is it will be worth it, right? Just remember that when people around you lose their jobs and food, clothing and other imports increase by 30%. Oh and when there are no nurses, doctors or care workers available as existing staff shortages worsen.

Or you could decide that Boris is right: we can have our cake and eat it, the EU will fall over itself to give us better conditions than we had as a member but without paying for the things we committed to in 2013, and without any payment whatsoever going forward. And everyone will be entitled to free unicorn dust - it'll be brilliant!

God, am I glad that all my family has alternative citizenship so we'll be able to jump ship if this idiocy really does go ahead!!!
