AIBU thinking this name is not too posh

So we are expecting a baby girl soon and can't agree on names. I really like Tabitha Lily but DH thinks it is very posh and that you can't use a name like that unless you have a really posh sounding surname. I disagree and think that it's a pretty name and that whilst it's not as commonly used like Isla and Olivia etc just because it's not as popular it's doesn't mean it's as posh as he thinks. He also thinks she will be embarrassed when she is older. And keeps fixating on her ending up being called Tabby and risking being bullied, even though she could always stick with the full name of Tabitha, plenty of women I know don't have nicknames so it's not like she has to have one, plus we live in a nice area and there are plenty of posher names in use in the school and the area in general. (Not a private school, just lucky to be in a nice area, not trying to sound snobbish just outlining our situation, it's so nice and pretty an area that it's a major tourist hotspot) Our existing children use their full names so her using her full name isn't an unreasonable expectation.

Are there any Tabitha's out there? Do you regret your name or like it?

Or to anyone else, do you think it's an ok name? I've tried looking for other names but I just love this and its got under my skin and I just can't find something else I remotely like.

We have a Tabitha in our (not posh) family.

When she was at primary school she was often called Tabby by her friends. Then in her teens she almost universally (outside the family) became Tab...which she loves and it suits her.

Her twin brother sometimes calls her Tabster, but that's specifically designed to wind her up and she has an equally irritating nickname for him.

I think it's a gorgeous name.

Tabitha is a little posh sounding ...adding the "Lily" to it certainly gets rid of that problem though grin

Yup Grin

Tabitha is pretty neutral on the posh scale. I think it's rather cute.
Lily is definitely not posh. It's the most frequent name 'shrieked' by mums across my children's playground.
Double barrel isn't posh anymore either. In my children's school it simply denotes unmarried parents (generally).

If your DH doesn't like the name isn't it academic whether or not it's posh? You need to let that name go if he doesn't like it and find one you both agree on.

MyCatIsASpy · 19/09/2017 09:49

I don't think it sounds too posh

But I am afraid I immediately thought of a cat when reading Tabitha

Dowser · 19/09/2017 09:53

I like Tabbie

TheNaze73 · 19/09/2017 10:03

I love the Tabitha but but, not so keen on Lily. It's a bit like calling a boy, Aubrey Darren

TheNaze73 · 19/09/2017 10:04

Bit, not but

HeirToTheIronThrone · 19/09/2017 10:05

I know a three year old Tabitha Grace. Her nn is Taba. I like it!

DarceyBusselsNose · 19/09/2017 10:08

Tabitha is a cat - Beatrix Potters Tabitha Twitchett.

BeBeatrix · 19/09/2017 10:45

I know a Tabitha whose parents announced at birth that she would be known as Tabitha or Tibby.

She's at school now, and never been called Tabby...

heron98 · 19/09/2017 10:47

I personally think it's super posh and she'd probably get laughed at living where I live. But if you can pull it off then go for it!

RedForFilth · 19/09/2017 10:49

I hate the name but that's because a really bratty character in an audio book when I was a kid was called Tabitha! I do think it is a ridiculously posh name too.
And if it gets shortened to Tabby that is just awful. Sorry. Also, if they baby's dad isn't keen I think you should both choose something else you both genuinely like.

Tinty · 19/09/2017 10:53

Tabitha is a lovely name. Personally I like Tabitha May, rather than Lily. As PP have said if your husband doesn't like it you may have to think of another name. Just keep suggesting really terrible posh names until he gives in and thinks Tabitha is a great compromise. Grin .

TatianaLarina · 19/09/2017 11:02

It's not a posh name.

In areas where you'd get laughed at for Tabitha would you get laughed at for Chanelle, Chantelle, Aaliyah, Rochelle, Tia, Roxy?

Ttbb · 19/09/2017 11:11

Tabitha is in the true sense of the word a posh name. V v posh. It really does make me cringe upper class last name or not.

elevenclips · 19/09/2017 11:17

I'm with your dh on this one. Seems I'm in the minority but like a pp I do find it a bit cringey and yes it is posh

Blobby10 · 19/09/2017 12:17

My daughter is called Tabitha and it gets shortened to Tab, or tabs or Tabby (which I HATE!!). We aren't posh and certainly dont have a posh surname. She was named after Tabitha Twitchett of the Betrix Potter books

poddige · 19/09/2017 12:29

There are a few Tabitha (tabby) round here - we live in the north and it's definitely not posh.

Hth

MaidOfStars · 19/09/2017 13:23

I like Tabitha.
I like Lily.
I don't like Tabitha Lily. I think it runs better with a single syllable second name.
If the poster above with a Tabitha daughter and a flower second name of Rose, that's lovely.

gotthemoononastick · 19/09/2017 14:13

OP,but your DH does not like the name?

Danceswithwarthogs · 19/09/2017 14:28

We have a tabitha Rose. Still love it 😊
